My parents don't support my hobby either. They also actually bring me down saying I will never make it. I understand that I have other stuff that takes priority over my hobby, but I love to DJ. I bought a DJJ-SB and it gets the job done at gigs, but my parents also don't want me playing at gig either. They even see me DJing at home as a waste of time. It's frustrating. Now, producing music is another story. I want to be able to learn the ins and outs of every DAW before I start seriously producing music.
Alec Thavychith my parents were/are still the same way. I ended up giving up about 5 years ago after all my gear was stolen. Fast forward to about two months ago. I was laying in bed next to my gf and said I wanted to start djing again and then she started saying don’t waste your money on that stuff. I’m slowly starting to rebuild my rig. Hopefully in the next few months I’ll be back up and running.
one thing to keep the passion going is to never stops listening to your favorite music. cause if it will be a waste if you spend on expensive equipments
ALRIGHT, HERE'S MY STORY, it's pretty interesting ;) Around a year ago i got into DJing+producing but I have always loved music. It was near my BDay+christmas, so i was lucky. I got the cheapest version of FLStudio (100$) as well as the Numark MixTrack II (Not Pro). Back then, it was perfect for me, and my parent didn't mid so much. Now there are many limitations for DJing, since the controller is basic and u can't hear the mix in headphones. SO, I'm currently saving up for something better, the DDJ SR(I wasnt something more than entry level controller). I am also facing limits in FL because many plugins/features are not in my version. So, I'm slowly getting to save money for this, but my parents don't agree with what I'm trying to do. My dad wants me to go to university and learn tech design, (I want to go to university as well) and always thinks DJ+Producing is something negative (drughs, alcohol, etc.). They are worried that music producing won't bring enough money as it is HARD AS F to get into the music industry. SO yeah, i'm gonna still stuggle with this till the end, i don't want to give up DJ+producing :)
I started djing back when I was 16 years old on a computer. However, I began bboying when I was 11 years old and I would always see local djs spin bboy breaks on technics 1200s. When I approached my parents that I wanted to dj they pretty much said they would not help me out to buy equipment. I never really liked controllers so my goal was to buy a full DVS setup. I slaved away working fast food and when I turned 18 I had two 1200s and a cheap DVS setup. Fast forward to today, and after balancing college expenses I bought a Traktor Z2 and I'm still using my 1200's. moral of the story if you really have the passion just keep saving money and work with what you got. I can rock a controller as good as I rock turntables. The skill set is the same. it took me 3 years to get my setup. and 5 years to get the perfect setup (it's not cheap). Hope that puts things into perspective. Much love yall!
Honestly, FL with all plugins isn't really worth it. Start with the producer edition, because it's not too pricey but it has all the essentials. It'll also depend a lot on what you're trying to make. If you're into hip hop, for example, all you really need is the DAW, some basic synths, and some good samples. And ultimately, knowledge and experience is a lot more valuable than a plugin, buy as you need, not as you want.
+Bilbo Swaggins lel i got the fruity edition, it's not that bad amazingly, (check out stuff i made with it: soundcloud.com/d33jax ). I'm still gonna get Producer edition, i desperatley need stuff like edison :p
When I started DJing, I bought 2 turntables of off eBay, used, and they were in crap condition. The guy stacked the 2 turntables in the same cardboard box with only dish towels to protect them while being shipped. Before I started getting interested in DJing and bought these turntables, I also wanted to buy the newest gear and be the best. However, practicing in my bedroom for the first few years and even the first several gigs that I did would not have justified the want or need for expensive turntables. I'm glad that I saved my money that way, because after all, its the skills that make you a great DJ, not how shiny the tech is.
You can even start with GarageBand and start out with a akai beatpad. GarageBand is an app for iOS and cost around $6. Plus the akai beatpad can be around $100. Those are some suggestions to start out with.
Short story from a guy who just recently subscribed (great content btw!):I started out with looking at youtube mixes and wishing to do so myself. That was like 3-4 years ago and back then, I wasnt even on a tight budget to afford something ... I was on NO budget at all. So I did the best out of the things I had: I created my very first mixes with using the windows media player and audacity next to each other. I used the crossfade-effects in audacity and tried to bring the song on the wmp in with the volumeslider there ... of course, there was no way of monitoring, there was no way that anything was beatmatched other than hoping so while pressing play right on the beat. You can surely imagine how "good" that worked out. The next stage I got a REALLY cheaped out mixer (like 130€) that had 2 channels which could be driven by USB. Still, that was not a good step either, as I now could monitor the channels and fade them in correctly (plus some trashy sounding effects), but didnt had any option of pitchbend the tracks or correct the speed of the tunes. I went working for a few months (while still being in school) to afford me a pair of pretty much used CDJ-800s. Now that was a experience that actually was near to having actual control! That setup went on and on, was used on private parties and just midnight mixing-sessions. After some months where my love for the music was really disturbed by the school getting harder and harder I went working again to afford me a small dream ... and this dream still powers my musical fantasies today. I really love my DDJ-SX and dont think that there is any controller that would suit me better. What Im trying to say: You can make it work with whatever you have. It may not be perfect with just 2 audio-programs on the pc and not even a monitoring option, you may not be totally happy with a cheaper setup. But you can still practice on the gear you have. You can dive into the world of DJing without buying the top of the line stuff. And it hasnt to be a bad time either. I still have the CDJ-800s and sometimes pack them out just for old times sake. Its the DJ that makes the night, not his gear. and pro gear wont make you a pro.On the topic of music-creating programs: Ive heard of a freeware(!) software called "Lets make Music" (often also referred to as LMMS). I didnt tried it myself, as I dont really have the time to produce myself. Maybe you could give us some insight whether this actualy is a tool to use or just a gimmick._______So, the short story got a bit longer than I wanted. Still, have a nice day y'all and cheers from Germany :]
my mom said no in 94,I got a job at Mc Donalds after school to get my first mpc,I found a used one for $800,she thought I was crazy back then, now I've worked with keishaCole and 50cent,point is NEVER TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER, who knows who you may become... @ohiorichkid instagram /soundcloud
I DJ of as a hobbyist. I personally think that if you are going to do this a long term like few years. Get a better quality controller like the DDJ SX or XDJ RX. :) if not, a DDJ SB will do the job. personal view. I am not rich. but I save . set a goal.
I've just bought the xdj-rx and a pair of monitors for 950 and I'm just starting out, I'm completely at peace of mind because I know I'll spend countless hours having fun and expressing my love for music :)
but your missing the point. its a kid. and its not really the cost but the possibility that the kids truly may not continue on it and move on. there is no harm buying a second hand controller or entry level one and allow them the chance to truly prove they are serious. look at it like this. if you had a 12 yr old son who never played guitar and was wanting to teach himself would you tell him to get a epiphone or a gibson.
Share my Experience. When I was a up coming Dj I know my parents couldn't afford my 1st Dj controller it took time but once I did my research of videos on RUclips and Other peoples website I finally got my 1st controller before I upgrade. It was the (Vestax Typhoon) it came around $199.99 but worth it plus I had a full program (Virtual Dj) That my boss give me to do my live Dj set at his station 98.2 The Beat L.A. (Syndicated worldwide) shout to him (Dj King Assassin) for giving me a opportunity to follow my dream as a DJ and beyond. Now my mom and (at that time when my dad was alive at that time) are happy and excited for me for pursuing my dream to become a DJ so that really meant to me a lot to me a lot. So always have communication with your parents for those who are up coming DJs or Producers and always have connections with DJs or Producers who are in the game and very grateful that TLM it's giving out tips and few reviews and share the knowledge big up family I wish there were a lot more people in the industry like TLM but I'm thankful and I know a lot people are too. Funkup Salute 💓✌.
Don't start by spending a lot of money. Especially, ESPECIALLY, if you don't know if it will take you somewhere. My advice is start off with a midi controller. A launchpad is 100 bucks, and it is really helpful when producing. That way, you'll learn more about producing and DJing, and if you want to keep pursuing it. You'll never know if you'll end up giving up for any reason.
You can torrent FL Studio with all the pluggins if you are hurting for money and then if that went against your morals well you can buy it when you have the money to support the creators.
For starting out on producing, a Launchkey 49/61 is good (if you want more control add a Launchpad). For DJs, a Mixtrack Quad or Mixtrack Pro 2 or 3 would be great to start with.
Try thinkign of it like this. If you were starting out as an artist would you go into a shop and immediately buy all the different brushes, paints and tools available? It is more often the best idea to start with a few basic fundamentals then expand your toolbox as you become more cometent and comfortable with the essential tools for your chosen craft. Over time you can then expand your skills and repertoire building upon this solid foundation. Doing so will also show commitement to your chosen art form and also give you a better idea of where to direct your passion in the future and also help identify what tools you will require to grow. P.s Hope ur feeling better soon TLM... :)
i did a big leap from a phone app to the traktor s4 my parent were very soportive of me saving up that money because my father was a dj in college they sead they were very proud of me for doing the reasearch but i saw that this is what i wanted to do early on because i love music i am 15 i had 1 gig so far and i record mixtapes on my soundcloud (dj swizle steve) i think saving up for more important things regardless of djing is better like putting money into the bank for the futer and getting a car i also think the traktor s2 is a good controller it is onley like $200 last time i checked and has alot of cool features on it and the softwere but sit down and talk to ur parents about price ranges and work somthing out and do some good reasearch and good luck👍🏼
if you shop around you can find ableton lite bundled with a controller for around 50$. or just ask someone that already uses ableton and has dedicated controllers. chances are they have an extrea ableton Lite key stuffed in their drawer somewhere.
FL Studio is the same as Ableton. You could start out with the $100 intro version then upgrade over time to the $200 producer, $300 signature, and $738 all plugin versions as you need to. I'd never recommend starting at the top for a beginner, and agree with a lot of his points made in here
Alright well this is my input! I bought a launchpad to be able to save things in ableton. Then I found out about pirating software. I pirated able Live 9 Suite and I love it. Working on a mixtape right now.
Ableton intro does have limitations. as far as i remember you cant. have more than 8 tracks on a project and you can only use 2 return signal tracks. there is a way around this that i used to do that is kind of complicated but how bad do you want to make music? you can (and i have done this before) open a ableton screen and work on one part of a song save and export it and combine all the parts in another session.
This weird but Im 46 and alwys been a hip hop fan. I leared about controller last year when a guy on the street was selling one. I looked up other ones and began watching DJTLM last year. If you really interested there are many open source or software option. LMMS, Studio one, . Ableton is awesome by the way. I have the mini launch pad controller. it only cost me $70 and a gemeni 1st mix. I dont reccoment that. Get the one he metion because you have pad for making beats and you get platter for Djing. Stay with it kid because their is vey little creativaty in hip the world needs you
I think its great platform especially for people without mean to buy expensive DAWS. Im just learning to drum program and have only owned both my controlllers for 2 yrs. Ive always wanted to dj and make music but life got in the way.
I started with a used Numark MixTrack that I paid $100 for even though it was missing parts and didn't work with the software I wanted to use.(Serato) Then I saved money until I bought the equipment I really wanted
Great response to the That question TLM, I like to tell that brother if he like FL Studio, they also have a starter version that runs about 65 to 70 dollars. it called FL STUDIO fruity edition. that works great. you can also upgrade to the Producer edition that run about 80 dollars. To the brother, don't spend so much so fast. Work your way up to it. Music software and DJ equipment can be expensive when your stating out. don't break yourself on your first move. All the less expensive equipment works great too.
A few advices that worked for me: For the controller, don't start with top of the line controllers. Buy something decent, but not too expensive. I got the traktor S2 for two years now and i'm still learning new techniques. Being limited in funtions can be positive when you are just starting out. I also advice you to check on ebay or other websites avaible in your country. I have saved over 500€ by only buying "used" stuff. For the software, no one is gonna hate you is you crack it... Everyone has been there once, especially at the start. Spending 700$ on something you have never tried is just not the way to go. You don't buy a ferrari if you have never driven a car... If you really want to buy a license, go for the entry fl studio one (costs about 100$), it has more than enough stuff to get you started. Last thing, don't buy a controller or software because you have seen some dj or friends use it, try some on your own, make your own decisions.
I am not saying that piracy is a good thing. But i am saying that everyone's start was by downloading fl studio from torrents with cracked plugins. It is ok , as far as i think , because if you don't have money for producer programs then try it out by downloading fl studio or ableton from torrents. If you will get success and you will get some more cash then it is no problem to switch to official , non-cracked software. About controllers. When i started out DJ'ing my parents said that they wont even buy the cheap and worst controller. So instead of that i actually asked my friend to give the DJ Gear , which was 2 cdj 200 and on3 djm 600 mixer. With these bad boys i learned how to mix and beatmatch! It gave very good basics. I had limited budget , so instead of buying new controller i bought used one from an old radio station. It is DDJ WeGo and i bought it for 120 euros instead of 250euros. Do your research , as TLM said!
So I just want to make this note here. As a Dj of any kind really, it's fairly easy to learn to use your controllers and new techniques solely through experience, however the story of a producer? I really .don't think that it's possible without some understanding of music.
Hi :) i started with fl studio demo version :) now i have machine. But my opinion is if her want makes it,just crack it .... try it... make profit .... buy it :)
+Tom Heldens and that 2nd part about controler :) i start with virtual dj 5, then i bought turntables + dv2 usb + serato control vinyls and started this way :) but for controlers Mixtrack pro 3 is good and better than sb /sb2 / mp2 pro :)
You could try grabbing a launchpad or launchpad mini and that has Ableton lite in the box to use. Controller I would go cheap. Check stores for b-stocks (no floor models), ebay and or Craigslist for a reasonable deal out there. I can understand parents with the sticker shock. A lot of money to sink into something that you say you wanna do. Then maybe later you get tired of it, parents don't wanna see something wasted. When you get there enjoy it! Learn, practice and have fun!!
i would recommend the same approach as TLM has execpt id go 1 step futher. i placed my kids onto free daw for a month~ (google is your friend, there are enough of them) Then coming from a kids perspective its. here mom, i got new FREE daw check me in a month. if your serious you should have a whole track and a handfull of samples or partials in that time. then step yourself up into FL or Ableton. the good thing is u buy it once and you have it for life. like i got my daughter Fl studio producers version and she will have free updates forever. as for controller do just as TLM reccomends but dont forget about 2nd hand gear.
You can always find good deals on used equipment on Craigslist. Even at your local pawn shop you might be able to find a good deal, hey sometimes even at ebay.
That is the problem with spoiled brats they think they got to have numro uno in everything sheesh I use the original mixtrack pro and have for a few years and I do shows with that controller it does everything I need as a mobile . But have at it kid make these corperations like pioneer and newmark all the money you can I my self like to have a little cash in my pocket or my bank account.
Hello DJ TLM! First of all I want to thank you for all the advice and knowledge you share with us every week. I enjoy watching your videos and I have learned so much from them. Huge fan from Los Angeles, California. Anyways, I wanted to share a link with you and see what you think about this software called LMMS. Maybe it can help the young lady and anyone else that is just starting out with not spending so much money but still be able to be creative with what she is doing. Here's the link: lmms.io/

Ableton Lite is good advice for this kid. Agreed. Oops, he's two years older now as I post, but still.
FL Studio is the same as Ableton. You could start out with the $100 intro version then upgrade over time to the $200 producer, $300 signature, and $738 all plugin versions as you need to. I'd never recommend starting at the top for a beginner, and agree with a lot of his points made in here
I would say for beginner producers get a second hand maschine mikro (£50-200 /$75-300) or get a analogue drum machine /sampler
Stay with it kid because their is vey little creativaty in hip the world needs you
+Lige George Hello Lige George, didn't see that you had mentioned LMMS already so I wanted to give credit where it was due. What do you think of LMMS?
I think its great platform especially for people without mean to buy expensive DAWS. Im just learning to drum program and have only owned both my controlllers for 2 yrs. Ive always wanted to dj and make music but life got in the way.
+Lige George great post. the world does need kids like this that actively seek productive outlets. now we need more parents
A few advices that worked for me:
For the controller, don't start with top of the line controllers.
She could also go for FL Fruity Edition.
It's not wrong as long as they can get the money themselves
"Parents Just Don't Understand"
I paid 100 dollars for my first controller.
same situation....... no support at all....all just got stuck'd just because i wanna be a DJ and producer......😔!!!
+Tom Heldens dude sb2 has gain controls.. The mixtrack does not ;/
u can map it :)
Tom Heldens if you're using Traktor ;)
im using Algorithm djay 2/virtual dj and sometimes serato :)
where do you download your music? thank you. i am just starting out
You could try grabbing a launchpad or launchpad mini and that has Ableton lite in the box to use.
FL Studio's base version is $99.99. Why not start with that?
+DGV because it has like 2 plugins
What's with LMMS? I haven't done much, but I have tried around a bit with it and it doesn't seem half bad - and it's completely free.
A bit off topic here but can i have the informations about your Jordan's? They look stunning!!!
i would recommend the same approach as TLM has execpt id go 1 step futher.
i placed my kids onto free daw for a month~ (google is your friend, there are enough of them) Then coming from a kids perspective its. here mom, i got new FREE daw check me in a month. if your serious you should have a whole track and a handfull of samples or partials in that time. then step yourself up into FL or Ableton. the good thing is u buy it once and you have it for life. like i got my daughter Fl studio producers version and she will have free updates forever.
as for controller do just as TLM reccomends but dont forget about 2nd hand gear.
I thinking to get the Xdj rx but it's £100,0 and she have to save up is this the right choice from a £250 DDJsb
i am producing from past 1 month and i want to start djing also .im in india and my parents doesnt support me ..please help (i use pirated softs)
listen I also having problem with my patents they ate saying to do career in IT can u give me tips to talk with them about tomorrowland
or pirating is also a opion
+Chunk its not. you should be counting your blessings your child is interested in positive hobbies and encourage the best not support cutting corners.
just crack it
lol half the video was the intro and tlm reading the email
I got the fruity edition and it works well lol
You can always find good deals on used equipment on Craigslist. Even at your local pawn shop you might be able to find a good deal, hey sometimes even at ebay.
+Intruzion P true

Hello DJ TLM! First of all I want to thank you for all the advice and knowledge you share with us every week. I enjoy watching your videos and I have learned so much from them. Huge fan from Los Angeles, California. Anyways, I wanted to share a link with you and see what you think about this software called LMMS. Maybe it can help the young lady and anyone else that is just starting out with not spending so much money but still be able to be creative with what she is doing. Here's the link: lmms.io/
Go to work, slacker!
