This was my very first acting job. I'm the little boy in the bright orange jacket and blue Dallas cowboys cap. The night before the shoot, the casting office called dad to let him know I shouldn't arrive on set wearing any purple or green because Sellers was superstitious of those colors. It turned out to be the coldest day of the century, and I was too cold to move on the basketball court. So the cameras stopped roll. Director Hal Ashby came over to me. My mom came running from behind the police lines over to me, and before long I was surrounded by adults. Hal told everyone to go away because he didn't want me to be frightened. He didn't want to send me home, because he was concerned I'd get discouraged and never try to act again. So, he had a private conversation with me. He told me to stand behind the fence and watch the older kids play. Hal said Peter would stop a few feet to my right and then deliver a monologue to a man pushing a baby in a stroller. That monologue was dropped from the film. Jump ahead decades later and I'm here in Hollywood, California. : ) Thanks for sharing this video. Fun trip down memory lane!!!
A couple other favorites are The Party, where he plays an actor from India and Murder by Death where he plays a Chinese private eye. Both a joy to watch! Because of such diverse characters played so well by Peter Sellers, when people ask who is your favorite actor or who is the greatest actor of all time, I know trust there are many deserving but I have to say Peter Sellers. It’s amazing what he has done in an unfortunately short life.
I love this film and Peter Sellers in it, in his final role. It's a subtle yet brilliantly done satire with so many interesting layers to it. Chance the gardener, is like the blank screen for people to project all their own pre-conceptions and illusions on. The one dimensional TV screen, his only real contact with the outside world or society, acts as a metaphor or reference to this too in a sense.
Before just reading this I was saying the same to people on RUclips who react to music. Told them to check out Also Sprach Zarathustra by Deodato, which by the way was featured in this movie; best pairing of song and scene perhaps ever.
Rick K YEP...You know you're stuff if you dig this scene. But, like you said, it has to be seen in it's entirety for the jaw to fully drop. When we realize what is happening, or being unleashed on the city of vipers, Wash.D.C; Pure Innocence. Never ceases to make me weep.
""A man who faces the world for the first time"" with Deodato´s music , a musical arrangement from Strauss which you will find in 2001 Space Odyssey original Strauss music when ""mankind faces ancient extraterrestrial remains for the first time"" Perfect anachronism ..
I love this film, Sellers performance is brilliant as is Douglas's. Have just read the book, surprised at the subtle differences, but much prefer the film.
Can someone PLEEEEEASE post the entire sequence? This version of Fanfare FTCM ABSOLUTELY COOKS!!!! An icredible fusion of Jazz & Soul. If I ddnt know better I'd SWEAR that was Billy Preston on the keys. Someone find this and POST IT!!!!!
As others have noted, this isn't Aaron Copland's 'Fanfare for the Common Man' (though you can also find a rock version of that by Emerson, Lake and Palmer) -- it's Deodato's version of Richard Strauss's 'Thus Spake Zarathustra,' released in 1973. (And Deodato didn't need Billy Preston to play keyboards for him.)
How did I forget that Deodato’s “Also Sprach Zarathustra” is in this movie? I am a big fan of his music! BTW - This film is one of the few instances where I think the movie is better than the book.
So poignant..up until the moment the music starts, you are led to believe they are living in a fine mansion in an upscale area.....brilliant. You can feel the waves of discovery perfectly through the music. Sellers was unreal in this movie. One of my absolute favorites.
I loved the simplistic honesty in Chauncey, when he said quite frankly "I can't read" and was taken by an executive to mean, like himself, that he has no time to read. Too busy. Our current occupant of the Oval Office can't read, although he says he knows the best words, etc. He couldn't hold Chauncey's balls in a bag.
I once met Richard Roundtree. I said that the opening scene to Shaft looked like a real NY street that he was walking down after exiting the subway. He said, "You know, you're right. Gordon (Parks, the director) told me to come out of the subway and walk down the street like I owned it!"
The least interesting part of the movie. We know millions live in shit. Most of the film brilliantly portrays the haplessness of the elites. Who do nothing about what we see in this clip

Any way how's your sex life?
That is none of your business.
Hey Matt I hope you have a star on Hollywood Boulevard too! :)
@@Jerrongamereview Bit of an odd place to reference that

Leaving the house after the first 2 months of Covid Lockdown reminded me of this
This movie told us how the world really works. You can see it right now if you are paying attention
Leaving the house again after 'lockdown'!
Genius 👏👏👏👏👏
Sellers should have had an Oscar for his performance...
The outtakes really deflated his performance and the ending but, you're right, he still should've won.
Two oscars
One of the greatest sequences in the history of film. That one.
It’s there
Yes.
except that this clip ends before the really cool part.

Fantastic. The two films I’ve watched most are Being There and Dr. Strangelove. Never tire of viewing them.

I think this is the best example of a song used in a movie, ever.
You really should see the show from the beginning to appreciate the whole context.
Yes, I totally agree..Chance is Literary stepping out into space like an astronaut..

Fantastic. Saw this late one night on TV. The scene that introduced me to Deodato's music.
Gem of a movie and this track is awesome.
Masterpiece.
That's me Sam Cole in the green jacket. Boy does this bring back memories. All so Peter Seller's ( Pink Peter was a great guy).
Yes...I understand...I like to watch
Love the music❣❣❣
Thanks for uploading this!
This is like waking up in the Matrix...
Genialer Film.

Both are wonderful, but the film has the added benefit of Sellers’s charming performance.
Looks a lot different now. 937 M Street NW, Washington DC.
priceless.
This fim and 2001 Space odyssey are the only films worthy to play this music inho! *grin*
Metaphysical movie..
Satie around. Beautiful.
Richard Strauss, not Satie.
We have no idea what will happen when we open that door, but we will find out when we do.
I am musician from Egypt i love this scene too many ch indeed
Yeah man!
This was used in the Barbie movie
As in all things Being There helps...
Strauss - Zarathustra in Funk !! This is Super! .... well, of course, Odyssey 2001 is a bit more)))
This is Deodato’s killer version.

Hey is Also Sprach Zarathustra in the original? If so what brilliant use of that theme
It is. This is the actual movie's audio.
Yes....this version by Eumir Deodato...with some of the worlds best jazz musicians:

He's good for a laugh tho. Reminds me of an old time comedy show or something. If they make it silent an black an white bet it would still fly!
Some graffiti said "white man got a god complex" which is a interesting song by The Last Poets.
Similar to the opening scene in Shaft?
...a reference to the opening scene in Shaft?
The kid with the orange jacket only appears for a few seconds
Music really richard strauss originally? granted no moog synthesisers in 1896.
What is the name of the song? Very hip
Thus Spake Zarathustra by Deodato.

This is my only favorite part in Being There.
My favorite parts of Being There is how he is so misunderstood in such positive ways.

Great movie...kinda reminds me of Biden wondering around...
Peter Sellers plays Joe Biden.
Has the world evolved since this movie was made? Forest Gump of its day. Do we need more morons in politics or a Chauncey Gardner
Now ..a strong poop is worth it
Biden.
