One term that confused me a lot in my early fragrance journey was musk. Before becoming immersed in fragrance land I thought of, and heard, the term used to describe a more animalic scent. Like when you go into the basement and pull out your stored clothes. Like, 'oh, this needs to be aired out. It smells really musky.' Now I understand it to almost be the opposite, a clean fresh scent. That has always confused me and I wonder at where the disconnect between common usage and perfume terminology comes from. Love your videos!
Hi I’ve been confused by this for the longest time too. From experience and some reading I’ve done it seems to be that musky used to mean more animalic, as musk used to only mean musk from animals (the gland from the musk deer). Now only synthetic musks or vegetal musks are used. While they share some common scent quality with the original animal musky smell, they are lacking the dirty/fecal aspects. They’re “clean musks” for lack of better terminology.
Thank you so much!!! I know most of my regular viewers probably didn’t need it but I’ve had a few ppl ask . Thank for stopping by even though you are already a pro! ❤️❤️❤️
Great video Chris! We only learn from personal experiences, and the help from others who are more knowledgeable than ourselves. I'm like a sponge, always open to learning, refreshing the information I THOUGHT I knew about. I'm sure there are many that are hesitant to ask questions. Take the opportunity subbies, Chris is very well versed and has an expert nose, and exquisite diverse perfume collection😊🙋.
Fast paced but quite comprehensive crash course of some basic terminology everybody interested in parfumes should know ! Very helpful and valuable indeed. Now, if I may suggest an idea for a future video: make a short video about most popular notes, accords and ingredients and give us some of the best representatives from your collection. Thank you for sharing some of your knowledge and experience ! It as highly appreciated ! Always !
I love that idea! You made me laugh when you said fast paced because most RUclips videos I listen at one and a quarter or one and a half speed this video I actually had to go down to 3/4 speed so I could listen intently
Thanks for this excellent 101 crash course on fragrance terminology. When I first started on my fragrance journey I had no idea what to look for in a scent or how it smelled on skin as opposed to paper. "Keep up the good Chris."
great information for beginners! There is so much about fragrance that most people don't understand. It's good to see someone recognize that and cover some basics.
That was a terrific video, Chris! It’s so helpful for the newbie to have this backgrounder to refer back to, well explained in plain but not simple terms, easy to understand but not as if you’re being talked down to. Great job! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This is a great idea, sometimes when I’m explaining perfume to my friends and I use terms they’re not understanding what I am saying. Looking lovely as always
Hello Chris, this video was very informative. I’ve been into fragrances for quite some time now, it’s always nice to have a refresher. You look beautiful as always. Thanks for the video ❤
Hello Chris! Thank you 🙏 so much for this video. Even though I know some things in this lesson 101; still some terms I’ve been reading or hearing can be confusing, and some, I’m too lazy to look up 🤣🤣🤣. I LOVE THIS! I rewatched it 2x before writing this comment. 🥰🥰🥰Also, I’m so excited to get my Vanilla Éclat! 💜💜💜
Thanks my friend. Greatly appreciate this video. Can you do fragrances that are safe to wear to work in the healthcare setting. Not sure if you have done one already❤
Hey there!!!!! Yes I did one recently (smell Great and Offend No One). Maybe 4-6 weeks ago? Those were some of my go-to scents. Let me know what you think. ❤️
One thing that surprised me when getting into fragrance was the concept of a 'fantasy note'. Obviously I knew that you don't find rice pudding and bubble gum in the wild, but I was surprised to find that even something like the scent of orchid is a synthetic note😂
I had to learn quickly because I watch quite a few fragrance channels😂😂. The one that used to confuse me is orchid but had to learn that it’s a fantasy note😉😉. In the beginning I used to wonder what barnyard goes with and I got it after some time😂😂. Also learnt this year about gardenia being extracted from other florals, one never stops learning🙏🙏. I think fragcom in general needs its own dictionary cos there are words that just kill me even though I know they are not official English words😂😂. Stay gorgeous🥰🥰
Hi Chris, I usually don't have any problems with your content. The contrary in fact. But this time I felt like I was listening to you on 150% speed 😂. When talking about theory and such it might not be the best idea to run through it. Just a pointer. ❤.
@@ThePerfumeNest No problem, Chris. I love your content ❤. By the way, I tried Gioiosa, and you are so right! I like it much, much better than Bianco Latte, which I never really loved by the way. Never got the hype. Indeed, that coumanrin note bothered me as well. Gioiosa is so smooth! Not sure I want a full bottle, though. €300 for a scent profile I am not wowed by....🤔.
Chris, this is so well done, I am trying to start a channel of my own can I mention your channel on this topic, or is there a link I can provide them with, to go there, I'm a little green well a lot green regarding all of this. I know the terminology but don't want to go into the weeds with this, I you did it so well I couldn't do it like that, thanks😊
Hello! Thank you sooo much! And congrats! If you have a channel send me a link! I’ll swing by. Of course you can mention me or use anything you need on this video. ❤️❤️
Hi Chris, have you tried anything from Dapper Fragrances? I must spread the word about this small indie company. I didn't find a sample of Ambrosia Imperial to try but I purchased their ''Inspired by'' Ambrosia Imperial Body Butter and am blown away! I strongly believe in credit where due xx
Thank you for describing animatic and indoles that makes a lot of sense why would anybody want stanky perfume though? So I got a sample of Hermes Twilly and it has white flowers I think but it has a flowery smell that turns to cat pee.
Thank you for the helpful feedback!! 🙏🏻❤️❤️Yes ! Some white florals can turn into something similar to cat pee I agree. Very common complaint. I’m with you about skanky perfumes! 🤣
Yes I actually sped the video up in editing. 🤣😂 Being a Southerner I speak slowly. I’ve had a few ppl ask me to get to the point quicker. 😂 Everyone is in a hurry I guess. 😄
