So funny to watch some of these older videos. Rafael has really stepped up his presentation game. The editing is much better now, too... :-) But the information is great no matter the production quality.
Following your online directions I just sewed boutanierre holders on 7 jackets. The first took about 20 minutes, the rest took about 10 minutes each. Thanks for your great instructions.
Wow your production value has really improved over the years. Would love to see you remake some of these older ones...maybe with some of the new guys perspectives.
Thanks for the advice, Sven! Mostly I was already aware of this sort of stuff, but it's good to have the information re-fed now and then. Plus it reassured me that I wasn't supporting some awful faux pas by using safety pins on the backs of my lapels... though I have been meaning to sew some boutonniere loops onto the backs of some of my lapels (I also have a few too many jackets which are missing the boutonniere holes, so I'll have to add those too).
Is there a difference between the style/size of a boutonniere for a wedding as opposed to another function e.g. a birthday party? I'm looking at various boutonnieres and they seem to be mostly for weddings and too large. Thanks.
Your extensive knowledge in gentlemen's style is amazing. Great video,by the way. All the information I need to incorporate Boutonniere into my outfit is provided.
Are you all going to be adding any more flowers to your boutonnière collection? I love it but after walking around my campus some the other day, there are a few that I immediately thought would be perfect on a lapel
What about shawl lapels w/o button holes? The only option is to pin it, placing the pin closure behind the lapel, ideally through loops that will hold it in place.
Okay - is it possible to claim this is a "classic" Gentelman's Gazette Vid? Can I use that term, here? Love it! Early development in delivery - and supreme ideas and 'tricks.' Genuine. Cheers!
In old Europe, the sewage was in gutters in the street, running down to the river. As animal smells and one can imagine how offensive it was to walk in the street. .... Women carried a small bunch of flowers, called a “Tussy Mussy”. A gentleman wore flowers on his lapel. When the oders were particularly offensive, he simply lowered his head and buried his nose in the flower !
Interesting. I was inspired this fall by the ubiquitous crappy plastic poppies found at every cashier's till. I worry though, that anything other than a real flower may run the risk of coming across as a bit tacky. What are your thoughts on that? Also, is there anything anymore in regards to reservng botonnieres for special occasions, such as your's or a loved one's birthday, or possibly an anniversary?
It all depends on the execution. Personally, I shy away from boutonnieres if they are look fake, others don't. Instead people always think my flowers are real and I get comments regularly. Most men will only wear a boutonniere on their wedding day, or if they are a groomsman or part of a wedding party. That aside, there are no rules on wearing boutonnieres for certain occasions, but it is often a matter of class. In the U.S. not many men get married in a morning coat, but if they do, you can bet they have a nice boutonniere...
+TenaciousTimGaming You know where to find it, right? www.gentlemansgazette.com/shop/boutonnieres/edelweiss-boutonniere-silk-buttonhole-flower-fort-belvedere
I love your channel and your web site and all the info there learning a great deal. I have two questions first I have bought 3 suits in the last few weeks, I enjoy dressing more dapper bur why is almost every one the button holes for the Boutonniere sewn shut? even vest pockets?? As well as even jacket pockets, what do people not use there pockets?
I am very glad that you made this video but I still have some questions. First: When can you wear a boutonniere? And if I wear an waistcoat casual without jacket can I still put a boutonniere on my waistcoat?
Gaius Marius You can wear one whenever, so long as you feel comfortable. Just remember the usual rules of not outdressing a host or wearing one at a funeral, etcetera. Aside from that wear them when you wish.
Dear Sven, I purchased a GANT boutonniere. It is a nice silk flower. However, it did not come with a stem (pin). How should I attach it to the lapel? Another question: can I wear a collar pin shirt, pocket square and boutonniere together?
Bartłomiej Kulpa I googled it and while the pictures are not helpful, so I don't know how to fasten it. Is there a button? I suggest you ask Gant or just get one here www.gentlemansgazette.com/shop/boutonnieres?limit=all
Bartłomiej Kulpa Yes, you can wear boutonniere, pocket square and pin together, but I would suggest you tone down the color and pattern of the outfit because otherwise it looks ridiculous.
+Gentleman's Gazette It depends on what kind of tape you would use on what kind of fabric. After all, the safety pin could damage your jacket as well if you used it too often.

Great thing is that all your tips never go out of style. Thank you for this.

This video was exactly what I needed. Thank you for providing such useful content! The safety pin tip is really good.
How do you match Boutonnieres with Pocket Squares and Ties?
The safety pin idea is brilliant.
+Ron Richo Glad you like it!
+Ron Richo I agree all my jackets don't have keepers, so it works great
sure, use a diaper pin too maybe
What is the boutennier plan for a shawl collar that typically does not have a lapel button hole?
Straight forward stuff, but I'm sure it may help someone so it's good that this exists.

Blake Canham-Bennett Glad I could help.
I watch these video at 2x speed. And I constantly hear “butthole” instead of “buttonhole”.
Good. And I must say, Beethoven works so nicely with boutonniere instructions. 🙂

Is there a way to hold the boutonniere without using pins? I can't add a buttonhole or damage the tux I'm going to use. Thank you!
Amazing tutorial. Keep up the good work Rafael.
Thanks Sven, u rock! Im glad i found ur channel 🙏🙏🙏
Just placed an order for two and cannot wait.

+SilentMover95 Thank you, I have been learning about men's style ever since I was 15 years old, and I still love it :)
+Gentleman's Gazette excellent sir.

Where can I get the pocket square in the thumbnail picture?
What about shawl lapels w/o button holes? The only option is to pin it, placing the pin closure behind the lapel, ideally through loops that will hold it in place.
Raphael were you trying to talk in a deeper voice back then???
Wow, a video without the jazz intro!

If the jacket has a shawl lapel, do the same rules apply?

Love your Edelweiss boutonniere!
TenaciousTimGaming Thanks!

I like the safety pin idea
Plus how can get that book u mentioned

+Jim Cameron Because it is cheaper that way to produce. Once you go more high end, you will notice that the buttonholes are open.
So it won't work well on a very thin lapel right?
I bought the orchid one from fort belvedere but it looks misplaced when I wear it with my suit.
Awesome! What kinda coat are you wearing in this? Do you have a video talking about the details of this? Its back looks different :)
Thanks :)))
It is a so called action back or shooting back, it is often accompanied by a belt on the back at the height of the waist.
The Gentleman's Gazette is an invaluable resource. I sell mens suits and I will direct my clients to this wonderful site. Thank you very much.
+Ron Richo That's very kind of you Ron, please do!

Love the stem holder(safety Pin)

love the video. Thank you so much
You're welcome.
Still don't know what was intro music named. :))))
Love the channel
This is a great video.
I always thought that supposed to be put over by the pocket .-.
Excellent ! Great videos!
Thanks! You might also find our articles and guides of interest: www.gentlemansgazette.com
Very useful as always
Larz Pearson I am glad
Lovely
Are you still supposed to put a button hole on a satin shawl lapel?
No. Simply, no.
Alright!
You can just use duct tape to hold the flower
...and leave some residue on your jacket
+Gentleman's Gazette It depends on what kind of tape you would use on what kind of fabric. After all, the safety pin could damage your jacket as well if you used it too often.
Duct tape is a certain tape. Gaffers tape another. A pin will not damage your fabric if you use it 200 times.
+Gentleman's Gazette Forgive my ignorance. English is not my native language. I thought all tape was duct tape :).
no worries, all is good.
Should use a pocket flower set...wont ruin the suit and cause RENTERS.TO PAY.
A firm German "all right!"
