- Making fire sticks primitively from scratch, making a fire using the sticks and making and firing a small pot to test clay from the hut.
The species of wood used for the fire sticks is 'Abroma mollis'. In the hibiscus/cottonwood family (Malvaceae).

I really agree with a lot of the comments bellow, the fact that you don't talk in your videos actually really adds to it. The video is simple, to the point and educational very nice. I find it very soothing too just hearing the forest and seeing work be done.
This is the best firestick tutorial I've ever seen.
+werewolf15orlando and he wasnt even talking
That's the beauty of it.
+werewolf15orlando yeah
Gonna take some practise, but I see what can happen.
@@thelert Did it work?
old primitive technology videos are gold.
I find it amazing that as "modern"people we have forgotten the primitive skills that got us to where we are today, and now we are trying to re-learn these skills. This guy is one serious badass!!
Why did you put the word modern in quotation marks? That just makes it sound like you're in disbelief at what year it is
@@Zamtrios245 i mean we are modern but not really that modern. If we were really modern then we would all know about stuff like this.
@@DannyCurrinton arguably the hallmark of modern society is that we no longer need such skills and as such don't learn them
@@Melonist well, i agree and disagree. sure we dont need to learn the skills anymore. but if we dont then we'd all die. i mean iron forging. we still do it. they did it back then as well. but at the same time not everyone needs to learn these skills
@@DannyCurrintonModernity is not a catch-all term for progress and greatness. These firesticks were once modern technology in a modern time.
It is a shame that we've forgotten these skills, but that's because we have invented quicker and more easily accessible methods.
This guy shares important information that got us to where we are now as civilizations. Unfortunately it's no longer talked about or shared. Props for doing this, sir
Also I support these silent videos. Anything modern like conversation just ruins the tranquility and beauty of just watching a man try to teach you how to survive. If the viewers demand speech, then consider posting two versions, one in silence, and one with a recorded narration for added details. If you keep them seperate, then the core ongoing tranquility of the main line of videos stays unbroken, while still providing you a verbal connection with your audience.
gamervoid I see no reason to add commentary when we can already clearly see and understand what's going on, even without the minimal captions.
gamervoid completely agree. the serenity of the silence is why i love these vids
gamervoid This is in fact how many primitive cultures learn from the adults, by just watching them do it. So yes, silence is definitely good.
gamervoid
I love the silence too. One of the reasons is that it eliminates debate (trolling). There is nothing here to disagree about and start a bunch of immature shit with.
+gamervoid totally agreed !!! silence speaks louder than words sometimes, and definitely when it comes to these videos :) the text on the screen is perfect to convey what a voice could any day.
you know you make good content when your lowest viewed video has more views than subs
So true
***** but his videos are consistently over his sub count, so either he has great content, or not enough subs.
+CrazyDOS both?
not true anymore
But it is again now.

MaZEEZaM nasty?
People die from this thing
Yes.
So that's my point, Nasty! you don't exactly want to die do you?
Can you imagine being the first human to figure this out?
yeah it's one of those things that seem weird to discover, but after a while of doing it it just becomes apparent that it's the most efficient way of doing it... like the guitar, at first you think "howed they come up with this" but after starting to learn about notes and ergodynamics, it just makes so much sense
+Nathan Lawler in this case it's friction make fire, cylindrical stick and hole can creat friction, channel friction fire out
Somebody was bored as hell.
It's a very interesting tribe. I wonder whether they have any idea of the fate of the tribes of the other Andaman Islands and what they make of things like the ships and planes that they must see regularly.
I really wonder what they were trying to do when they made this discovery.
is it just me or are his videos just very satisfying!
Yes, they are. I think it's because there is no babbling, shouts for likes/subscriptions/money, no idiotic music.
Just the sounds of the guy quietly crafting, with the acoustic backdrop of the forest.
I like it.
You and 6.7 million other people!
I think its especially so satisfying because we have some kinda instinct from the past which came up here.

I just realized what I want to see from you and your channel. I know exactly what it is that we want to see. I want to see a man start in the wild with nothing and slowly crawl upwards towards our modern day trappings. From one innovation to the next I want someone to SHOW ME how we got to living the way we do today. By doing so, you could show us where we come from, and just how much work it took to get us to where we are now. You have a new storytelling medium to show people something special about themselves. I really can't think of a more delightful way to tell that story. I think we would all like to help.
gamervoid I'd like to point out that the majority of modern technology cannot be invented by one person, it takes groups of people sharing ideas to get the things we have. Not to mention the whole purpose of this channel is to show you how to make some PRIMITIVE technology.
gamervoid I don't think one person can do all that, I mean it took huge teams of people just to make simple machinery, and it only gets more and more complex from here!
DeoMachina Yeah, it would get progressively more and more complex.
I tried to do this with chemistry. Starting from how each mineral and compound can be isolated. I got around to 1600 and then it explodes in complexity.
It would be possible to roughly show the progression like in Civ game :) but you should skip the hardest parts: Discovery. He knew that clay can be used for pots, imagine the accidental discovery of that, it must have taken some time.
Having all the knowledge of humanity and instructable how to restart it. From buttnaked man with a rock to at least steam engine. This would be possible. This guy here in small videos got to the level on which many people were 10k years ago (except for great civs of middle east which weren't much ahead anyway).
I agree with you so much. These videos make me think about life, how we ended up where we are now, and how you don't often realize the amount of progress that was.
The fact that some basic life necessities can be made (shelter, fire, tools, etc.) without the aid of any modern equipment or tools is the amazing part. Using just things found in the forest.. rocks, trees, vines, etc.. AND the knowledge of how to make use of them is the message of the videos. Well done!
Man, this is awesome! Keep em coming!
***** How did you get the opportunity to go out to the rainforest and survive out there? These videos are so satisfying to watch.
***** Bows are somewhat more complex. Firstly, find a straight-growing young tree of osage orange or hickory wood, as these are the easiest bow-woods to work with. Cut the tree down and split the wood it into staves. Shave the bark off of the best stave, but follow the grain of the wood. Do not "shave down" any knots as this will create weakpoints in the outermost age-ring which will become the 'face' of the bow. If it needs straightened, pass it through a fire very quickly a few times, and then use a Y-shaped tree to bend the branch into the correct, straight shape. Next, you want to shave down the sides of the bow until it bends evenly. Then shave the back. Never shave the handle section in this manner, as you need it to be the strongest section. You want your bow to bend evenly, so this means that it should become slimmer as you reach the tips. For a bowstring, you can either use twisted gut cordage, or sinew cordage. I prefer the latter, which you can make by pounding some dry sinews (most people swear by deer sinew, but I find that cow sinews are longer and easier to work with for beginners,) with a rock until the fibres separate. At this point, twist some of the strands together in a clockwise direction as if you were making rope. Combine two or more of these twisted sections, but twist them in an anti-clockwise direction as you proceed. Keep adding more sinew as you progress further up and it should hold itself together. Tie a knot in one end and fashion a loop at the other. Attach to your bow. Congrats. You now have a bow that will probably not shoot straight, but after your third bow or so, you'll get the hang of it. :P
***** Can't skip the glorious details
Saw your channel and instantly had to subscribe. Please keep adding text because your insight is crucial. You should consider teaching this in person. Keep up the masterful work~
good to know ! i always leave that turned off.
Closed captions is crucial, thanks. Already using your videos to find clay and use it to make planting-pot bottoms (to catch excess water) for my many pots which have no corresponding bottoms. I think you REALLY need to continue to step up your iron-smelting and mining game-- take us into the iron age and see how much it improves your efficiency (having iron tools).
I like the added text better than the closed captions. It is so much easier to see. The closed captioning blends in with the background too much.

Bear grills 2.0
Schnupfndrache7 not really. bear grills just shows action bullshit most of the time. these are true real life skills that people needed to have to survive as "advanced" humans. not jumping in cliffs and eating the most unappetizing thing to be found, although that can come in handy.
Taste Sking He does the things your not supposed to do because he has people following him who can bail him out.
You are not supposed to do the crazy shit he does! He is showing you how to do it if you find yourself in that position. They don't make that clear enough on his show.
making this into a t.v. show would destroy it. they'd want to add other people, and then they'd give you scripts filled with needless drama; and all of a sudden everything beautiful about this is dead.
Bear Grills reference ?
Suddenly it's a reality show
Yep, someone would have to get eliminated, manufactured drama, keeping points, secret plotting, etc.
I have a feeling your channel is about to become very big. It's already been shared on Reddit and I think other websites are gonna share these videos as well!

The same way they discovered the use of doors... logic
The risk of death makes people very creative
truth be told creativity is very risky. most of the creative ones died trying new things that ended up being dangerous but the odd creative one here and there lived and told the others what worked, the ones that died told no one.

That's gotta be incredibly satisfying, especially the first several times you do it. Cuz the effort and time that'd take, especially at first when you aren't as experienced with the best way to get it started, would be immense, and then theres smoke, and you blow, and THIS time.... BOOM, suddenly all that work resulted in fire! That's gotta feel fantastic

Thanks man, I look foward to it!

***** Very nice videos! Will be there one about hunting? Or maybe making a boat or a space station?
***** A space station lmao xD What about a Lamborghini!
I just wish I had known this when I was younger. Thanks so much, for these videos. They are truly amazing.
Great video! You can also use a double socket or "keyhole" fireboard- just make two sockets & connect them with a little trench. This can be used with a thick piece of wood, which keeps ground moisture or snow from screwing up your firestarting & makes the whole thing more durable if you're putting weight on it (like with a bow drill). Can also be easier to make with blades like stone flakes/razors/thin knives (like ones made from a hacksaw blade).
I have to try this. It must be a truly satisfying feeling the first time you can make a fire with nothing but the elements in the wild.
I'm gonna have to try that. You make it look easy, your good at it. I think it would take me about 2 weeks to figure it out enough to do it more than once, practicing every day. Great instructional video as always, great job!

Did you make this friction fire in a part of Australia that is hot and humid like a tropical rain forest?
If so did the Aboriginal people of the region made their friction fires by the hand drill method too?
Looking forward to your reply!

+Primitive Technology Thank you for your quick reply! I knew what your answer was going to be before your reply. I simply wanted to point out to anyone reading this that the hand drill is not only use a desert type of environment but also in hot humid tropical environments. The Amazon Indians of South America and the African Pygmies of tropical Africa and the part of Australia that you live in along with other parts of the world like the part of the USA that i live in is very hot and humid most of the year and that is how the Natives in my area made their fires and how I make them too, the hand drill!

+Primitive Technology Can you use this method in areas like germany and other colder, and mostly rainy, parts of europe too?
+Sup3rN0v4R Yes!!! I know of people in Spain, Portugal, England, France, Ireland, Germany and others parts of Europe including Easter Europe that practice the hand drill method of friction fire making!
Experts believe that the hand drill method was the first friction fire method use by ancient people too!

This is one of the best channels on youtube. Hands down
This young man from primitive technology is the most fascinating DIY using primitively tools he makes and using the flora around him to build three different dwellings. I was ImPressed with each one as he took on the challenges that seemed impossible. Simply amazing on everything he does on Camera. He's so much better than other or primitive people posers that are in videos. This guy knows his stuff and succeeds way. Beyond what you think he'd get to. Each video kept my full attention I was so mesmerized by what this young man knows what to do with the most primitively tools he makes which all work for him extremely well. I believe he could actually exist out in the bush for well over a year by himself before checking in on him but seeing what he accomplishes with each and every task he works on is worth the watch with your full attention. . It's just incredible. I've never seen another man do what he does. Id want him with me if lost in the bush or When there's an Armageddon!
now years later, hes even barely starting to create iron tools, and build a full brick hut from SCRATCH. hes simply amazing
You are amazing sir, massive respect for your experience and skill.
Better than any "survival shows"
Aprendi muito com seus videos e concerteza sou muito grato por isso
I learned this technique (and several others primitive skills) in the mountains of Idaho when I was a Cub/Boy Scout. It's amazing how the passage of time has turned what I called camping into what is now referred to as primitive camping. I would love to try the clay bits, looks like fun!
I like that the captions have their own captions. Thanks for the videos. Nice work.

you gonna do any vids of you hunting and cooking the meat?
+Primitive Technology Don't kill things just because people wan't to see a video of it only do it if you have to

+Arnold Layne It's not only because people want to see it. It's because people want to see it and he'll end up eating it. People hunt animals normally specifically just to eat it.

I have been to North Queensland and the wilderness there, is no joke. Many venomous snakes and gnarly spiders. Big ass lizards that get spooked and will try and climb you like a tree and shred your skin with their big claws. Hell even the plants will kick your ass there. Wait awhile and stinging nettle are the 2 i remember the most. And don't even get me started on the heat and humidity there.Knowing the conditions this guy is working in, gives me an even greater respect for the content he is putting out. Especially doing it in nothing but a pair of shorts and whatever he wears to support his massive balls.....
You forgot the drop bears too. Nasty bloody things.

I like that you have nothing but your pants to show that you can survive with just knowledge.
You video on using fire sticks is worth a thousand reviews of ferrocerium rods that are expensive, non-renewable, and that you may not have available in an emergency.
I suspect you have spent some time with indigenous people somewhere. May I ask what group or tribe?
+Primitive Technology nice stuff to learn friend ! ....where are you making all of this ? ...where is this ? :) ...
that damn mosquito got me swiping around me thinking it was around me
How I enjoy and envy a person who can do what he has done in these videos.
I find these videos greatly entertaining and find that the knowledge is handy if I were ever stuck in a survival situation, but it always makes me wonder about what you actually do for a living, how long do you spend in the forests recording one of these videos, do you live off the land or bring supplies, if you do stay long term, do you stay alone, how do you deal with the isolation? I have watched countless survival videos and shows to know the techniques to survive but the one thing that I probably can't deal with is the isolation. I might be able to distract myself with tasks such as gathering and improving my tools, but unlike you or any other person who has been stranded alone, I haven't experienced complete isolation and I was wondering how you deal with it.
How do you keep your clay from cracking. Anytime I have done this, the clay cracks.
Awesome! Thanks!
materials sciences knowledge of a mechanical engineer lol fellow broski?
also if the clay is not dried out completely before firing it can crack
So you just used wet soil as clay? or is there a way to identify clay?
If you ever saw the clay and squeezed it in your hands, you will always be able to distinguish it from the soil or sand.
I think it would be a great idea if you can do an episode about pottery/woodwork in general.
Showing what kind of earth is good for what purpose. Like how to spot earth with much clay in it and where to find it mostly.
Tips and tricks for the pottery. You always crush some stones or something and mix it in the clay and use ash. For what? will the ash make it harder or is it like flour for some dough so the clay won't stick so much an your working surface.
And for the woodwork episode it would be nice if you can show the best ways to get some strings etc. What kind of wood has the stronges bark, tips to split some smaller logs or something without breaking it...
And if you make ropes or something similar, do you let the fiber dry first or is it better to use it, when it is a litte moist?
he would have to talk to do that
You must be so strong to make fire, trust me, I tried. Turns out I'm weak as fuck.
hey
Richard Ferrara sorry :(
That really is the plus side regarding fire sticks. It is very easy to make fire with them if you know what you are doing. I do not know what I am doing with fire sticks, for the record, but if I am lost in the woods in the cold, I will have to learn pretty fast.
That pan up to the stars wow'd me almost to tears! It was so beautiful!!!!

"Gently blow the smoking punk" Rock fan with a cigarette: 😏
After freeing up time by not having to gather as much food, (which he did previously) now he inventing firesticks, instead of using other more time costing ways to make fire, he now excels in this way. With controlled fire he can cook food, and protect himself from critters and keep warm. Also creating his first small pot from clay! Excelling in primitive technologies....

who else thought there was a mosquito bothering you at first.
I like the simplicity
Did you see the UFO at 3:46? The aliens were watching the little human build a hut.
Lmao good joke
I think the basics need to be appreciated here. Friction is the key to making heat and therefore fire. KISS.....keep it simple stupid. Light stuff or highly combustible first then heavier as you go. Big eye opener for me was using pine needles and moss in the Snowy Mountains, NSW, Australia, in the middle of winter to get a fire going. Felt like I knew nothing after that one. Cudos to Primitive Technology in helping me to remember and learn.
All this stuff we learn from watching your videos can save a life some day. Just saying... knowledge is everything, and someone can find themselves in a very bad.. life or death situation and live to tell about it, and Truely have you to thank. I kniw these videos where Not meant for survival, However I just can't get past the knowledge here... It's so simple... at least you show it to be, basic... Yet Amazingly Skillful... and sadly we have lost touch with this. Thank you so very much.
+Mrbooboo1972 I second that! If I remember correctly there is another way to make fire using what is called a bow drill. To create a bow drill, you have to have one stick that bends and you put notches on each end to tie a vine onto. The vine must be longer than the stick so it can be twisted around the second stick. The second stick has one end placed onto a small piece of wood and you place a rock large enough for you to hold and is comfortable in your grip on the top part of the second stick. The purpose of the rock is for something for you to hold onto and at the same time will allow the second stick to move when you pull the first stick back and forth. This method also needs the same materials to start a fire as this sticks used in this video.
like when you said this 4 years ago, no one thought we would have this covid situation . we might really need this if factories start closing, no ships coming in etc...
I am now sick so i am watching each and every one of your videos from the beginning to the most recent
Could you make a video on how best to transport a fire after its lit to its desired location?
transfer the hot coals and restart the fire in the new location.
Just make the fire where you want to have it right away... -.-
It's called char cloth, which is a great portable way to carry fire with you.
the best thing for carrying a "fire" to avoid all the intensive part of firesticks, is to carry a tinder fungus with an ember that is slowly burning up.
I'd guess put embers in a clay pot, put that in a woven basket, and carry it that way. You could just use the pot, but it would get hot pretty fast, or you could just use the basket, which would burn up.
How did you tell clay from dirt?
He mentioned this in another comment: wet the dirt/mud, roll it into tubes as thick as your finger. Wrap it around a finger. If it falls apart, it can't be used for pottery. If it tears a little or not at all, then it's fine for pottery.
Also, you'll find clay around the sides of a river or underneath dirt in some areas.
I'm basing all this on what Primitive Technology has said so far in his comments, as I haven't done anything with clay since middle school. :)
+Lord Grimm If it smears like poop as gross as it sounds its most likely clay and if you can model it then its most likely clay. Gray clay is very common where I live.
Filip clay is also a slightly different color than dirt
@@captainpiefox9133 Clay can be red, gray, brown...
Clay is one of the components of dirt what your really looking for is dirt that's high in clay or by removing the heavier sediment you can make nearly pure clay from just any dirt in your back yard with 2 buckets a sieve and a pillowcase, some dirt and water also a stirring stick if you dont want to use your hand
I know this video is old as, but how long did you dry the sticks out for before they can be used??

When I was learning to make fire with a bow drill I learned that even if you fail to create a coal, you're still warm! :)
Hey, thanks for posting this today I made a fire by doing it just like you did, and I told my friends about your channel.
How'd you get the fire you build outside your tent into the tent? Lol did you just picked it up and run?
"Press E" to pick it up, then choose it from your inventory (Press "I")
Then "press F" to go fuck yourself

With all of our fancy 'hi-tech' lives, we've gotten too far away from the dirt. We need the dirt. This guy does not have that problem. Wonderful.

I love how he has detailed instructions as if anybody watching this would actually try it
A lot of people probably try it
