My mother told me a story from her childhood: Her family worked hard all day one day (1920s) picking watermelons & stacking them up for a man to pick up the next morning. That night, her pet goat got out of her pen, went straight to the watermelons, & ate or put her hoofs through every single watermelon. Her father gave the goat away to the man who came to pick up the melons. Have backups for your backups!
Oh my gosh. He his crop and the goat.
Lost
I bet the next season for watermelons was spot on w/ no goat to boot!
Morning. Put up 10 jars of diced tomatoes this morning
🤗
I live in Belgium, only on my 4th year of gardening ever, and this year planted mostly what I know works for me (corn, potatoes, pumpkins, squash, courgettes, tomatoes), and all seems to be going well. We're very blessed to have a nice amount of bees. I'm experimenting with some new things like beets. Every day I work in my garden I learn something new.
❤
@DarrylDuncan-ni3ik it's a big world but yet getting smaller ❤❤😊
@DarrylDuncan-ni3ik Hey, sometimes I have to Google search where we are, and I live here! lol
How are food costs where you live? Going up like ours?
@@TheFamilyFarmstead Fresh fruits and vegetables are going up the most - between 20% to 40% higher than 4 years ago.
My husband and I are in our 70's and our garden is small by necessity. So far we have been blessed to have nearby produce stands to get some beans to can and dry, etc. Judging from our experience this year, I'm not sure how much longer we'll be able to continue either activity. So I'm beginning to stock up on the canned goods from a grocery store (gasp!) to make our pantry a little easier to handle. Patera, I'm saying prayers as I'm typing for your Nana - that her health continues to improve and you all enjoy one another as you can. ♥
💚
I will be 69 in August. I was beginning to think about how I was going to handle gardening in the near future. Before I give up entirely, I'm going to build a few more raised beds instead of expanding my inground garden. Canning? I think it is a wonderful way to preserve food. I just have to get my mojo going to get started.
@@gailoreilly1516 canning is addictive 😃
I did an experiment with my purple hull peas. I had seed from 3 different places: local store we buy from, some I saved and one pack of commercial. I wanted to see how each grew(especially my saved seed). I'm so happy to see they are all growing equally well! This is the first year all my tomatoes are from my saved seed. I have about 100 tomato plants (trees!!). Cukes are my saved seed too. On the tomatoes we have battled the heat, deluges of rain, aphids, blossom end rot and we are winning !!! So far, we have put up 300 ears of corn. I almost feel like the garden is free except for HARD WORK!!! We are in our 9 th year of homesteading and am still learning what we will grow and what we will buy. Some things are not worth it
We realized last yr that we'd need about an acre of lima beans to get enough to can & make it worth our while! I'm seeing that w/our snap peas this yr.
That is awesome and you should feel very proud and accomplished.
way to go!
Lost my garden due to no rain , and I couldn’t keep up with the watering. Thankful we have backups . Thank you for preaching to backup . Making a new plan for next yr .
That happened to me last year. I invested in an automated watering system. It wasn't too expensive, and all I have to do is attach my hose and set the program, and it waters on the schedule I set.
Plan A, B, & C 👍
@@ShannonSmith0805 did you buy a kit or go to the big box stores?
I made a batch of rosemary soap this week. Turned out beautifully. Also, learned to make creamed soups as I note the ones I used to purchase have gone bio-engineered. Keeping busy in MI.
Good morning Patara, I live in suburbs of Denver. It has been a struggle this year to keep my garden from being destroyed by 5 hail storms, wind and heavy down pour's. Then we got intense heat, so far I've only lost my spinach. I got 3 of those black covers you talked about in one of your previous videos and they saved me, but it's been exhausting. However, I keep going, thanks for all your inspiration 😊😊
I’m in castle rock, my peppers took a beating and flowers 😢
Make that SIX hail storms. The one today was horrific with grape size hail. A lot of the leaves on my squash plants are shredded. It would be foolish to think we won't get any more. Time to get the hail covers and figure out a structure to put them on. It is a lot of work for sure.
Blessings 💞 So far our little garden is producing. We've harvested about 10 lbs of carrots that we grew in cardboard boxes. Also, 30 lbs potatoes grown in cardboard boxes.
The vine borers and squash bugs are relentless on the various squashes 😢
May I ask you what type of soil you used?
And I would ask how many boxes for the potatoes? Thank you.
Same here
The potatoes were grown in 3 boxes. The carrots grown in 2 boxes.
Thank you!
Last year my tomatoes & cukes were pretty pathetic. This season I did my own experiment with using copper wire, some plants had the copper, some didn’t. I was skeptical, but now the ones with the copper are really flourishing. I have a tree that seems to be under distress, I’m going to also try this to help it. Look up electroculture gardening 😉
Very interesting.
I'm glad Nana is back home and doing well ❤️🩹
Get well and strong Nana! We need your wisdom❤️
The bees and hummingbirds were late this year in VA. Just had my bees that I keep buzzing around, but I try and plant for the different kinds of wild bees too. They are finally here now and I believe it had to so a lot with our cooler temps this Spring.
I really have learned a lot this year gardening. I have never had so much pestilence in my garden in all the 10 yrs that I have been planting. Bugs, slugs, bunnies and a persistent buck who kept jumping our fence and eating my plants definitely made me talk to myself a bunch🙄
Learned how to make slug traps with beer and my fencing is now way higher. Garden is now recovering and humble gardening produces the sweetest produce. Thank you Lord for all that You give us❤
Good morning Patara! Our corn is getting tall in central VA too! Praise God for all the rain He has sent us!
I am leaving alot Have everything I need to start a garden however dealing with neuropathy and both arms.
I have all these beautiful new books that I want to read I can't hold them up right now so if anybody reading this comment please pray for me. Pray for my healing. Just because I can't do right now doesn't not mean I'm not learning and I will still run everything I can. Thank you!!! ❤️🙏🕊️
We are in a severe drought here in South Louisiana. We have huge cracks in our ground and could use some prayers for rain. We have been in the high 90’s and it’s been brutal!! Prayers needed🙏🙏🙏 ❤❤
Good morning Patera! What a wonderful harvest. No rain here in Southern Oregon, but so thankful for an abundant well to keep our gardens satiated! Blessings to you and yours!
I grew up in Westport Oregon and I remember how beautiful the gardens were there . My garden here in Texas has not been good this year because of the heat and no rain ❤
I'm in southern Oregon also. Very dry here.
South eastern Washington here!! Very dry- and very warm over here
Sitting here snapping beans and have chicken in the canner while I watch you. Our corn and tomatoes are looking promising. Lot more beans to pick. Critters ate off the melons. Peppers are late but coming along. I love this time of year. Next year a bigger garden!
That's fantastic, I want to triple my onions next year
I learned how to grow potatoes! Harvested 22lbs today! Not a huge haul by most standards but I'm so proud of myself. 😂 canning taters this weekend!
Praying for you and the fam Patara. Pray for us too. God bless.
I learned not to put tomatoes so close....lol still getting ALOT but harder to manage and they are a foot apart.... Just really done good this year.... Thankful
Rule of thumb 18 to 24 inches apart on maters
@@nancyking9711thank you I will remember this for next year because my tomato bushes are so big that I get lost in them really I do😮😂😂
First time growing cucumbers, squash, zucchini, tomatoes and lettuce. I’m learning as I go. Thank goodness for channels like Patera’s and Pin ball. I’m having a lot of success this year so next year I will kick it up and maybe turn my backyard into a full garden. Love and prayers to your Nana.
You have such a beautiful, functional farm. I always love watching your intro! The storms are definitely here in middle Tennessee. Day 2 and 2 power outages in 2 days. Four hours yesterday and 2 hours today. It’s flooding in town and at the bottom of our hill. Stay safe, Patara. Keeping your nana in my thoughts and prayers! 💞🙏🏻💞
Gorgeous garden Patara! I had to go back and watch a couple earlier videos when you were first planting in May, you worked so hard but look at the results. A miracle and amazing! That cucumber you were munching on sure looks yummy. We should be picking a few by the weekend, making a classic cucumber, red onion, and tomato salad 🙂 Prayers for Nana and all of you. big hugs and thanks so much for being here!
There seems to be more honeybees in Central Vermont this summer and that is very good news. On the subject of back ups for your backups… Vermont has been hit by some serious flooding and (while we weren’t hit by it except some water in my folks basement) my heart breaks for all the cornfields that have been FLATTENED. Folks and animals were counting on that grain. Hayfields are now mud flats. Folk were counting on that haylage. Keep VT in your prayers 😔
It is wonderful to see your garden. I sure miss having a garden but can't due to disability. We used to pray over our garden twice a day. That is one thing that being close to the land keeps families grounded.
Your talk with your Nana, is my favorite episode. Hope she gets well soon.
Thank you for all the encouragement. This year the garden has been great. Such a blessing after last year. My daughter really struggles with accepting failure. I have been trying to teach her that the only failure is the one we don't learn from.
I've had to let my garden go this year. My husband diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer since late May. We are a thet hospital and treatment center very day. It IS our backups I will be depending on this year.
When ginger makes an appearance it excites my soul. She’s on the journey with us ❤
God has blessed me with tons of bees! My cantaloupe and watermelon patch is covered. So so happy.
Sending Nana healing energy ❤️ Fiber peeps will be valuable too…shearers, spinners, knitters, weavers, crocheters….
Hi Patara, I'm writing this to your nana and I know she most likely won't see it but I wanted her to know I'm thinking of her from CT.
I didn't have a good mom but my nana was there every single day. She passed away from lung cancer when i was 11, I'm 27 now. I think about her every single day, I talk to her and I miss her more than anything. She was extraordinary. The good nana's always are. I'm praying for you and I asked my nana to visit you. 🙏 ❤
Yes, it feels good when your vegetables are looking good
So true. You always need backups. I have had a really hard winter and spring. Planted my tomatoes sitting in a chair while I had pneumonia. Still having multiple spiritual attacks. Weeds are taller than my knees but still getting a harvest but have my cans in the basement just in case I can't get out to pick. Keep doing the things. Keep your spiritual health number one ❤
Cucumbers from the garden, my favorite. They actually taste like cucumber not just look like one with no flavor.
Many bees in SC. Flowers, Basil, and Mint, along with blooms from cucumbers!!! MANY!
Enjoyed your program tonight. My husband and I bought our homestead about 3 years ago and we've been so discouraged because of drought even here in Louisiana. So we moved to 8x4 containers and have had much better production. It's getting better year after year. We decided not to move to that condo on the beach 😂
Card is going out In tomorrow’s mail. Thinking of Nana and sending love and prayers.💕
Today, you mentioned Cherokee NC. My Uncle Bill is a pastor there. They call him Pastor Jack at Living Waters Church. He is in his 80s now. I miss him dearly and love him still. Thank you for everything you do ❤
Your cats are so cute… and always very interested in whatyou are doing… 😺😺
What beautiful corn!! I just pulled my very first long neck squash. WOW! So excited!!! With all of this rain, my zucchini and long neck squash are just growing left and right. I, too, have noted a lack of bees. I have picked my green beans which I froze some and canned some. Monday night we were hit with two rounds of thunderstorms. On Tuesday, we were hit by showers in the morning and two another rounds of thunderstorms during the afternoon. So much rain. Too much rain, I would love to send your Nana a get well card who is just precious. Your garden looks absolutely beautiful. God Bless you, your family, and Nana. Ginger looks so cute.
Hope your Nana is on a good road of healing.
Second year of raised beds. I don’t grow much. The idea is learning. I learned what needs to be added to our soil. I learned WHEN to plant. I learned what crops need shade from our harsh late July sun. I am getting comfortable with what seed works best in my area.
Our land used to be an alfalfa field. This year I let the alfalfa grow back. I am covered in pollinators….
Parts of our garden is doing really well and other parts are not. Our sunflowers, corn, green beans are doing very well! Other things aren’t even sprouting. My grandmother had a garden snd canned and I’m wishing I would have learned more from her. I’m not giving up though! Something really cool that happened was when we first started our garden and we were planting I prayed over everything and asked God to help me do this. Right after that there was a huge rainbow over our garden! It was awesome! I knew what that meant.
The bees are very prolific here in Spokane Washington, I go out everyday to my little in town garden and there are at least twenty to thirty bees on my flowers. Hope your nana gets well soon.
I'm out on the west plains, outside of spokane. We haven't had many bees this year, very odd. I'm glad uour seeing them in town!
Prayers for your nana
Your garden is beautiful! What I have learned, especially after I saw your garden, is that I have a lot to learn. I will need a lot of back ups and thank goodness I have worked on back ups for the last 8 years. Hopefully your nana will live long enough to continue to give you the help and encouragement that you will need during this time. After that time, she will be in the arms of God where she will walk by your side. As you well know, you are never alone. May God be with you and your family.
Hey Patera - we're seeing bees, but not a lot. Here in Eastern Colorado, we've been harvesting tomatoes, cucs, beans, zucs, etc... Harvest has been extremely early and very abundant.
You are blessed! In Central ky. Not much yet. Garden seems to be sitting, thinking about it
Prayers for your Nana ❤
I have missed seeing Fritz who is a darling cat. Yes, I have pictures galore of my grandmother and family from before, during, and after the Great Depression. Now, as far back as I can remember (about 5 years +), we had a garden. Back in those days in WV, the weather was very different from today. I can just remember helping my grandmother can everything except meat or poultry.
Good morning. There is nothing better than snacking in the garden. Lol. It is looking awesome. You are so blessed to have all the rain you guys get. We are so dry here in Az. Its hard to keep things watered and alive without drying out. God bless 🙏🏻🙏🏻💜💜
Not to mention the water shortage and restrictions. 😢
Your garden is beautiful! My little spaces are cooked and drowned from the erratic storms. Am starting again for fall as soon as possible. Prayers to your Nana- hope she feels better soon !
Thank you for you encouragement. I hope Nana is feeling better.
Bumble bee was so nice to see. We rarely see a bumble bee in eastern Oklahoma. Glad Nana is feeling better.❤❤
My garden is full of bumblebees (SE Oklahoma)
Those garden veggies hit different!
I hope your NaNa feels better soon! Loved the video of you talking!
Great garden!
I would love to be a farmer if I could. I will keep learning and do the best I can that's all any of us could do right?!🤗❤️🙏🕊️
Nana prayers for you!
I'm very disappointed in my garden this year, it's by far the biggest one I've ever had, and so far I've pulled the least amount of food this year. I really think I under watered. I've always used sprinklers and I heard so many people saying not to I chose to hand water this year ... I think I just didn't water enough. I think the lesson here is do what works for YOU!! sprinklers have always worked for me in the past and next year I'll go back to it! I'm thankful I continued to buy and put food away.
You are beaming ,glowing in the beauty of the garden !
Sending Prayers for Nana! ❤
Appreciate so much that you share your animals and plants w/ us. I live by the Beach in NY, so I have more access to Nature than most NYers but I don't have animals. ❤️ UR Critical Info 2 Prepare.🗽🇺🇲Bk NY❤️
In Southern California, we are seeing way more butterflies than I have ever seen before, some bees and wasps to pollinate our garden. ❤❤❤
Farming ain't for the faint of heart. Grew up with parents that knew how to keep us fed.
Your garden looks wonderful. Here in Texas everything is just cooking in the heat. Plan on trying a fall garden. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for that. And I LOVE your cats! 😸
Love how there was such a fuss over your barn kitties & now the are following you everywhere!!
About the bees. I have always planted pollinator flowers around my garden and had a lot of bees. This year we had to reseed a few areas around the edges of my yard so my husband reseeded with clover and red clover. This year we have had probably 10 times more bees than ever before. They love the clover which is close to my garden ❤️
I agree. So far my garden survived the drought we had here. I have mulch down and I think that helped a ton. Our well has a slow refill rate so we have to be careful. I finally have a lot of bees here. For years I didn’t have very many but this year I dedicated a couple flower beds for them and they showed up. One year my apple trees produced nothing because they were not pollinated at all.
Feel better Nana.
Day later but hoping you are feeling better mama. Take care of yourself
Thoughts and prayers for your Nana. ❤
Our garden is coming along but not where we were last year. All seed started here at home, but we are going to get something. No such thing as “just a farmer”, where would be without them?
I’m seeing a huge amount of bees! Was Stung when a couple got inside my shirt!
Our weather in Arkansas is brutally hot today. Our garden has produced lots of cucumbers and squash early on. I have more planted that look so so. Our tomatoes are doing so so. The plants look leggy but I have been getting tomatoes from them. Okra is starting to come off. The heat is really taking a toll on everything right now. Earlier this year I had a good harvest of potatoes and garlic. I am gonna try a bigger Fall garden this year. I am thankful for my grandmother teaching me how to grow a garden and only wish I had learned more from her when she was alive. She also printed a cookbook of her recipes for all of her family. I use her recipes all of the time. Prayers for your Nanna!
I bought a shirt yesterday that says “gardening, it tastes better than starvation “
How wonderful: a huge basket of squash and cucumbers!
Good morning sunshine 🌞
Prayers for your Nana 🙏🕊️
Farmers on both sides of my family ( idaho and indiana) I listened to my elders and asked lots of questions while they were here. My grama even gave me a book with recipes for food and soap and such from when she grew up. ( 1920’s) I’m so happy to have been blessed with them in my life. You are correct, in it’s hard work and lots of failure in growing your food. I do my gardening vertically due to small yard but, i get a good amount to supplement my food stores.
Wise words of wisdom! My urban backyard now has rabbits chickens and a garden that is teaching many lessons. All because of you!
I finally have plenty of bees but only male flowers. I am beyond frustrated. I have lost EVERY cuc plant due to stem collapse. I will NOT give up, planted new seeds this week.
I planted tomatoes in containers. They got blown over a few times in some strong winds but survived and are producing! They taste soo good. I am a novice and not dependent on it but it’s so fun to grow food to eat and share. I’m going to try a fall garden for the first time. Wish me luck! Southwest Missouri
Thank you Patara for sharing your beautiful farm and garden. Prayers healing and love for your beautiful Nana. Stay strong and keep on doing the good. Blessings ❤
I’ve learned a lot from my grama! Especially flowers. She was in garden club & she taught me how to can tomatoes & spaghetti sauce. I got my jars & want to start canning again. It’s been awhile but I can do this! You’ve taught me so much too Patara! I’ve made your pastry egg bake several times now (I have chickens & a lot of eggs) & it’s been a hit! Thank you so much for your videos! 💕
Praying for your Nana. ❤
Happy for your harvest! I'm zone 5 and got DECIMATED by hail early in the season. The gardens trying to come back but frost comes early here so...the life of a "farmer". I'll give myself an A for effort.
Hope your namna feels better, praying for a speedy r.ecovery Thank you Patera for your vide🌻🌼🌺🌹🌸❤️🙏🕊️
My card is in the mailbox, i hope Nana gets a bunch of love from your followers
Just wanted to come on here and tell you. Thank you for your gardening videos last year. I've been having a hard time learning how to garden where I live in a city. Now at my gardens are thriving due to the hard work I realize it takes to put into gardens. I thought you planted it. Watered it and let it go.
❤
There is SO much nurturing and protection involved.
It’s a learning curve, that’s for sure!
So sad for my garden, I got sick and it turned into pneumonia. Starting to feel a little better finally after 3weeks, gonna get out to try and clean it up and salvage what I can this evening, and what I've learned is don't give up. Love your videos thanks for being such an inspiration to me and so many others.
I am glad that you are on the road to recovery! Don’t overdo it and take it slow!
That corn is worthy of He Who Walks Behind the Rows!
You said you'll take one ounce of credit for all this gorgeous farm work. Ah heck, take 2 ounces of credit, will ya? LOL
Great video, sweetie.
Those beans look perfect to make 'leather britches' -- and useful to store that way as they can be seed backups next spring if you don't need to eat them. Corn looks great! .. I'm growing some Hickory King as well this year but also Blue Hopi, Jimmy Red, and some Mexican heirloom blue/red/purple corn from the original corn belt of Mexico -- reason is the dark kernel corn has 5x the protein of the white corn like Hickory King and the hybrid/gmo yellow corn (heirloom yellow dent has about double those). I grew HK mostly as a novelty and to have more genetics available if I can't get seed later; but my focus has shifted to landracing the dark kernel flour corn varieties. A family friend started getting twenty percent larger pig litters after switching to the heirloom higher protein corn.

There is nothing like a tomato, cucumber, lettuce Summer garden sandwhich. Looks like you have the cucumbers.
I'm all containers, planning on bringing in before cold. Somehow continue....
Best wishes, prayers and a spoedy recovery for your Nana. ❤
My garden is limping along. The rabbits keep eating my beans. Finally planted some in grow bags. I have tiny green beans! Patio gardening isn't half bad.
Love to all the family!
Thanks for all you do! ☕️
Thank you Patera for sharing your beautiful garden. ❤
Here in the Northeast, we have had so much rain our gardens are rotting. My son and his family moved back to New England from another part of the country a couple of years ago and has not had a successful garden yet. They are so discouraged.
My great uncle was a prisoner in Italy during WWII, when he came home he could only eat one spoonful of food, because his stomach had shrunk so much. That’s was starving is like.
💗Nanas are a blessing. Sure will send a note of cheer and get well💗
