What happens is that William made several military movies like Black Haw where he was from Delta and there they had given him training if you search the internet you will see William with a rifle, I suppose they taught him self defense techniques there. On the other hand, the actress who plays Gretchen practices Kickboxing in real life, which is why she is more limited than William. Anyway, a guy trained in Boxing, Kickboxing or any martial art eats the guards with potatoes. Imagine if Michael had received any combat training.
