    That is called an Air Draw Bar.. worth its weight in gold. In 1981 during my apprenticeship with my dad we had a Model 55 Index Knee mill. I was green but at tool and die school I learned about DRO’s. So I contacted a guy who came to talk with my dad and I about installing one. I’d been counting turns and accustomed to the left or right side of the screw but thought the DRO made perfect sense. My dad practically threw the salesman out the door and told me it was never going to be installed on our mill. He soon after went away to Fla with friends in a week long golf outing and told me to answer the phone and take a “few thousandths off the floor” every day while he was gone. I did the opposite. I had that guy come back and install the DRO on the mill and he was pissed the first day back. I told him to just turn it off and use it manually and he did that day. That first night my dad came back to work (as usual) and must’ve tried the DRO. The next morning my dad was in a state of absolute euphoria.. he proclaimed that with this DRO there IS NO BACKLASH!!!! He told me that from that moment on if anybody came to rob us he would stand in front of the mill/DRO and say take whatever you want but you ain’t getting my mill!! You will love that DRO because it makes your mill very accurate. Read the instructions well. You can set the resolution to read every .0005, every .0002 or every .0001. I chose .0002 and it’s close enough for milling and jig boring. If you want it closer buy a surface grinder.. you want it closer??? Buy a hone..good luck gentlemen and get that gate fixed..

    Hi Steve and Don!
    It is REALLY nice to see you! You guys do REALLY good work!!
    You have a little white building out back that.. could stand a lick of paint. (hint,hint Don) I use Benny-Moore.
    The OLE' Bridgeport has found a good home!... Yes...She has a few stripped screws, nuts,cracked fittings, and A LOT of backlash,... but it is NOT UNLIKE the guys restoring her; At 81 + I need a few upgrades and repairs, and a heavy coat of new paint wouldn't hurt either!
    By the way! CHECK for tunnels under your fence!... Don may have burrowed under the fence!
    The BEST security system I have ever found is a good fence, and (3) WELL trained Dobermans!
    I have signs that read....:WARNING!.... BEWARE OF DOGS!!!... The DOBES can cross this property in (8) seconds flat!! Please call me before entering!!
    Best Wishes, AND GOD BLESS!
    Gary

      Yeah but having a sign that says beware of dogs, is admitting you know that you have dogs that bite, that's intent in the laws eyes. If someone enters your property and gets bit, they can sue you and will win. The sign to have says, dogs on property.

  • @gorak9000
    @gorak9000 2 года назад +5

    The problem with bridgeports is no matter how clapped out and shitty they are, people seem to think they're sitting on a goldmine. They're stupidly expensive compared to better mills with less recognizable name plates on them. People here sell bridgeports for >$5k, and I bought a much larger / heavier / more rigid box way CNC machine for 1/5th the cost. Now it needs work too, but all in it's going to be considerably less than any bridgeport I've seen for sale in the last 3 or 4 years locally, and a much more capable machine in every way. Larger travels, bigger spindle motor, flood coolant, full enclosure, etc etc etc.

    • @10swatkins
      @10swatkins  2 года назад +1

      It depends on the work you want to do with any machine.... Bridgeports are easy to run and for most people they would never use the full power of a "Better" knee mill, say a Tool Master. For me its all about the kind of work I plan for it.... I have little needs for heavy cuts, If I need to remove a lot of material its into the Bridgeport Torq Cut 22 which can move metal a hell of a lot faster than a Tool Master . Really want to move some metal and it's off to the Planer.... The work fits the machine for me.... After all you would not want your Dentist to use a jackhammer on you....

    "All it needs is a nut" but I think he meant "nuthead" 🤭
    We have an "Aizpurua" knee mill when we bought another company a few years ago. It now is in almost usable state but still needs a lot of TLC. It was completely greased up and black, like the most darkest and filthy spot on your Bridgeport. Everything still works but the tentioner for the motor belt (it has a variable belt drive) is rattling loose all the times and the gibs in the dovetails are completely worn out but strangely enough the lead screw and nuts still seem to be in good condition (almost no backlash). If I ever get the time, that will be a fun project to restore.
    Meanwhile I'll hook on to your rebuild project to learn some tricks from the master.

      @@zedostenso3069 Yep! that is correct! I don't believe that the table ways on his are chromed. Could be wrong! Bridgeport offered it just about any way you wanted to buy it. If they are chromed, and he decides to put it on his planer, a good carbide tool can get under that chrome and peel it right off. But man, that's going to cause him to remove lot more material that will require cutting the saddle and installing Rulon or equivalent to make up for all of that removed.
