Hi ☀️ I’d like to share my insight after 3 months using Speakly every single day! I hope this comment will have visibility so that it can help people who hesitate 😊 First, I 100% agree with what Lindie said in this video! Here are some other things I noticed: -- > I’m a French native speaker, and I did for fun the placement test, somehow I did a mistake (still don’t understand why I was wrong), and I was put in Intermediate level hahaha (same for my C1 Italian, i was also put in the same place), so don’t expect the test to be precise at all :) --> it seems like every language has its pro and cons: in the Russian path, all the sentences are voiced with real persons (which is awesome!!), but there are no grammar help. In German for example, the voice is robotic, but when you make a mistake, a grammar notice can appear, and that’s really cool! --> biggest con for me: the 4000 words are actually the same for every languages offered. The sentences are the same independently of the language you chose, and that’s a pity as the most common words are different for every language BUT after using it every day, repeating out loud and with focus, I can definitely see my progress! I’m quite amazed to see how this app made me more comfortable with the speaking part, as it’s the most difficult for me :) I tried many apps, and this is definitely the best one I ever found! So if you’re hesitating (but feel ready to use it diligently), you can go for it 🌟 Thanks for reading and have a nice day!!
Hey @Mihoki - Thanks for the feedback! We're working on the things you pointed out - indeed the placement test is sometimes very touchy feely and the algorithm might overreact, so it needs calibrating :)
So you’re saying the Russian has no grammar help? That’s kind of making me think twice about going pro with it (I was only thinking about the lifetime version because it’s actually cheaper than the annual which makes no sense)
Yep. I said exactly the same thing. In fact as soon as I saw your title (I hadn't seen the thumbnail) I knew it would be about Speakly. It's so good that it makes me want to learn a language that's on it just because it's there.

I'm a native Spanish speaker and it was kinda funny that I got 9:45 "wrong" too lol I said "quiero" like you instead of "quisiera" which is way too formal for me edit: but thinking about it saying "quiero pagar" sounds kinda rude, then I remembered that I usually just say "la cuenta, por favor" or "podría traer la cuenta, por favor"
@@LindieBotes Hi, also a Spanish speaker here (Honduras) :) "Quiero" is indicative (Presente de Indicativo to state a fact) while "Quisiera" is subjunctive (Pretérito Imperfecto de Subjuntivo expressing an intention). Technically you can say either (to be honest for me it's redundant since "The check please" suffices) but I agree with Francisco and Alex that "Quisiera" and "podría" sound more polite, as both are in subjunctive cases. Saludos a todos :)
Me paso lo mismo, pero cuando me sente a pensarlo esto tiene sentido ya que uno tiene a ser mas polite cuando esta hablando con un desconocido, especialmente si es alguien de servicio, por lo menos yo soy asi
I was advised by a Spanish friend to use 'quiero' not 'quisiera' [It's not subjunctive but conditional]. This runs counter to English and French where the conditional 'I would like/Je voudrais' is definitely the word. 'I want/Je veux' in ENG or FR is way too abrupt - rather rude, in fact.
I like that you did your first impressions instead of a traditional review. It lets people experience it before downloading and shows both the good and bad.

I think that Language Transfer by Michallis is a hidden gem too (which is a completely free audio course, no premium access hocus pocus) Edit: just to note, the courses in the app were created by just one guy! Dude! I just downloaded it, and already it has blown everything else out of the water in terms of sophistication, and I have barely scratched the surface with it. I started with the Russian and was very pleased with the narrative story feature which translates into English, and also has the Russian transcript. So, that to me, is very useful. THANK YOU for posting this! To bad they don't have Serbo-Croatian; if you have any recommendation on that front, I'd be interested.
I love the Speakly app! I heard about it through Days of French 'n' Swedish. I'm using it to learn Italian. Even though my daily goal is currently set to 10 new words daily, I'm actually learning more words than that through the context of very useful sentences in the study area as well as through comprehensible input in the listening exercises. The music recommendations are one one of my favorites features on the app. I enjoyed watching your review Lindie as I felt and still feel the same type of enthusiasm for this app. 😄
After watching this video, I decided to check it out. I love it! Just finished getting a three month subscription for German. I used the coupon code and even for being on an extremely tight budget it was affordable. I'm looking forward to seeing how much I can learn with this app.
I remember trying this app months ago when I was a very new beginner in Spanish and I was SO overwhelmed by the content. But now that I've advanced a lot I was just as excited as you were about the features! I downloaded the app again after only 2 minutes into your video! 😂😂😂 Thank you for bringing this gem back into my awareness!
It's always so nice to see your progress and to hear you speak Spanish because you're doing so well (and you say you're rusty...). This was a very extensive and useful review and it seems like, just as you mentioned, the activities are quite different so you don't get bored or tired doing them. Plus, it also has grammar? Amazing! I downloaded the app to try it out thanks to this video but I'm still debating which language to use it for. (I agree, it's super difficult to make friends as an adult, not sure how people do it)
Definitely gonna give this app a try, although once again, I am disappointed that there is only a "Spain Spanish" option, which so frustrating and almost always the case for language apps (a big reason why I rarely use them to learn Spanish). I'll use it for German and Russian, and hope that they will continue to add many more languages (Swedish please!)
I agree with most of your review points, I have been using it since last year and as a UI Designer as well, I was so happy when I saw the update/refresh of the app. I very much agree that activities voices sound quite robotic.

In Spanish, we don't normally use in the future tense the phrase *"ir en camino"* _"on my way"_ so *iré* is a good translation for this sentence. 12:41
I am learning Russian on Speakly. People should note that the grammar guide for Russian is currently not complete and not directly available via the lessons (in the way that Lindie demonstrated for Spanish at 4:45). The grammar section is available from the side menu but it contains nothing about verbs.

Those are my two passions too!! 🤣💕 I primarily study Japanese so if the app doesn't have that language it's not on my radar. Glad to hear about a new language app!
Was pretty eager to use this application, given that a few people have recommended it that I trust. However, the app freezes up after every single "question". I'm not sure if they are doing maintenance on their application, or what the deal is, but it hasn't been a good first impression.
They really need to think about adding Japanese. I'd be itching it try it out if they did. Some of those speaking / listening exercises are exactly what I want. And it's so difficult to find stuff with transcripts. That's amazing on its own.
Thank you for your tipps! I've just tried this app and it's been so amazing! I'm going to use it to improve my German through English and why not... refresh my Spanish and French :)
Thank you for sharing this with us today! I'm just a little sad that I can't use Chinese or Japanese with this app yet. Hopefully they will bring more languages to the platform soon!
@@LindieBotes you’re welcome ☺️ and wow! I’m so happy to hear that! You definitely are someone who helped inspire me to share my language journey on here, so this is awesome!! 😁
What an excellent review, great energy, no filters! I really enjoyed it! Great points mentioned. As you said, I wish they had some Asian language on there. I'm currently vacillating between Burmese and Siamese, or maybe some other from the region. Now that you speak Spanish, Lindie, maybe hit me up to get you started with the weird and wonderful Canarian Whistle Language. I give lessons of it on Italki.
Dear Lindie, Thank you very much for the discount codes. After I watched your video some time ago, I tried Speakly and found it very useful and nicely designed as well. Yesterday, I used the code for 1 month Russian. Kind regards from Germany, Linda
Long time listener, first time caller 😆 Just wanted to day that I would love to see more reviews like this Lindie! There's so many language apps out there and it's hard for me (as a beginner) to know which ones are going to teach me the most helpful words/phrases and in a way that will sink in. I honestly think everyone goes to Duolingo first because its more well known, but I appreciate hearing your thoughts on alternatives. I now have 9 language learning apps on my phone and am suuuper overwhelmed so please, more reviews like this! Oh and, thanks for being a bloody legend! (*waves from Australia*) You're inspiring so many of us nervous nellies to just give it a go 😁👌
26 minutes! Yowzers! I’m in. 😁 I loved this app when I tried it, but didn’t want to pay for the full access. I’m 6 months into my Italian learning and wasn’t sure how the advanced features were. ☺️👍🏼🙏🏼
Hi! Indeed - the Russian course uses native speaker voices in all the elements. In general most of the languages are such - but some are still in progress, and might have parts of it, that are not updated it. But yes, Russian is nicely all native :)
@@LindieBotes haha I've tried the bridie in the green logo and Busuu. I definitely enjoyed Busuu, but what I feel I will enjoy more with this one is the listening exercises with transcripts, and getting more useful words. As an intermediate German Learner living in Germany, I appreciate the real-life examples and options for content to practice with. (already downloaded and gave it a try!)
Wow I kind of want to try this although I don't really use apps! It's a shame, I wish they had it for Japanese, Korean, and Chinese though! I guess that means I should pick back up Spanish? Which I've been ignoring for a good uh.. 5 years? 😂
It looks like they made some changes to the interface since then, I don't see those different cards to navigate anymore. It's a good app as a supplement to other resources and it's reasonably priced.
Speakly suggests different genres. As you learn more words in the target language new recommendations are given. Songs are unlocked one at a time as you progress building up a library of songs and artists. It's a great feature of the app.
Hi, I just discovered your RUclips channel and I'm excited, because you are a kind person and I love the way you explain what you teach. You won a new subscriber.
I've bought actually the year subscription and I must say I'm really happy with it. Music recommendations are great and I really like listening exercises. For now, I use it for Spanish but I have plans to learn French too 🤩
One of the few apps that doesn't immediately ask for a credit card, sadly a rarity. I like that it recommends listening and gives some music suggestions to break the learning grind I wish you could slow down the speech in the vocab
Goodness, you are adorable! And very talented in languages. You remind me of myself as a young lady...Especially your confession that you do not have visual 'Math' brain. 😊 Good work!
I started learning Spanish and French casually wit a certain green owl. It has most of the main features of Speakly but what sounds cool about this app is the access of verb conjunction tables and grammar. However, the voices sound atrocious! And I thought the other one was pretty bad... I'm not willing to shell out for a paid app any time soon, but it is nice to know what's available. In any case, I wouldn't stick to just one app without using other resources.
To say the same thing, I'd say "No estoy segura, pero estaré en camino...". Either way (no estoy segura/no sé; estaré en camino/iré) is good; it may be dialectal difference, or style, or whatever. Being a man, I'd say "no estoy seguro". I've read that in some Asian languages, how you say something depends on relative age. Does Speakly have you learn the appropriate words for your gender/age/social class?
Have you used it until now ? I bought it a couple of weeks ago, it is pretty good, I am waiting to see what will be my level after a few months using it.
The content looks like it's well curated, but does language learning stick long term with Speakly? Any thoughts on how they incorporate retrieval practice and spaced repetition? Even though Duolingo has it's shortcomings, I find that I actually retain (written) language better with Duolingo's exercises than with any other app.
I've noticed (and this may be either a strong point or a weakness, depending on what each learner prefers) that, at least in the case of Spanish they use both a European Spanish accent and an American one - Mexican, I think but not sure, it could also be from Central American or the North of South America, definitely not from Southern South America (Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, etc.).
I downloaded it and it's really good so far. It only has 1 out of 3 languages I learn (german and I also learn czech and mandarin) but maybe I will but it after the free trial
@@LindieBotes Aw dang, I didn't know that! That's awesome. I wonder how it compares to learning Hungarian in terms of difficulty. I've been looking for a way to brush up on my Russian, so I'll look into this app for sure. I find it wondrous that I can learn about an app made by Estonian creators from a RUclipsr from South Africa living in Singapore. 😂 Casual magic of the internet ✨ This video made my day for sure.
Now I'm tempted to try Estonian again. I will say though that I don't think it's entirely fair to compare a free app with one you have to pay for. Quite frankly, I should hope a paid app is better than a free alternative. Otherwise, what exactly are you paying for?
People are often quick to remind us (those who might not say the best things about Duolingo) that it is free, but a few things: 1. It is technically freemium, like many other apps. These days, some features that many people consider necessary to benefit from are ARE behind a paywall. 2. Even if we think of it as completely free, very few people's time is worth so little that a good paid app is not much better value. 3. Lots of things are free but not really. Some great things are free because of the advertising (RUclips, for example). Duolingo is not really any cheaper than a paid app, you just pay in a different way.
What's your shirt say? I guessed from part of the letters, that it's a Bantu language, and when I saw the whole thing and searched the web it came up as Zulu.
I downloaded it and tried for a few days and also felt like it was one of the best apps I had ever seen... Then my trial period ended and I started using it on the free version, to which I was sorely disappointed. It's *very* limited, you can't use the speaking part nor many other functions that make it stand out from other apps. While duolingo is very basic it's understandable why it's the go to app for most people, I think it's indeed the one that offers the most content on its free version.
Do you (or anyone reading this) have any comments as to how to not mix accents between language? Since starting with Swedish I sometimes throw a Swedish accent when I try to speak German (neither are my native language). Thanks :)
Hey! Hopefully you see this and reply! I just stumbled upon you, and really enjoyed watching this video and subsequently subscribe to your channel. Anyway, I’m a little confused about the app: is it supposed to be in your target language and then you fill it in with words that are in your mother tongue or vice versa? For example, I am learning Russian, and everything in the app is in Russian, but then all of my examples are in English, But it wants me to fill in Russian words. I am so confused. I really want to like the app too. With how much you talked it up, it just seems like such a great app and I want to get it! Thanks for any advice you can offer!
Hey! This sound like your selection for target language and interface language went wrong - please let us know at ott@speakly.me what is your "learning language" in the app and your interface language. You can check this easily from the account settings - thanks, and I will check this personally right away :)
Thank you for this review! I didn't know about this app and I'm planning to try Estonian with it. You are an inspiration Lindie!!! Thank you
Those are my two passions too!! 🤣💕 I primarily study Japanese so if the app doesn't have that language it's not on my radar. Glad to hear about a new language app!
Hey! Unfortunately no Japanese yet, but its in the plans and hopefully coming in the end of the year :)
Love your enthusiasm! Nice review
Was pretty eager to use this application, given that a few people have recommended it that I trust. However, the app freezes up after every single "question". I'm not sure if they are doing maintenance on their application, or what the deal is, but it hasn't been a good first impression.
Your New haricut is so classy.
I'm a web developer and a polyglot. Just like u, I admire when the app/web site is so pleasant to my eyes.
I’ve just downloaded the app fir my Spanish! Wow I love it 😻
Lindie I always look forward to your videos! 😊 thanks so much for sharing your language journey 💜
Thank you Ruby! I just found your channel today! 💙
(*waves from Australia*)
You're inspiring so many of us nervous nellies to just give it a go 😁👌
26 minutes! Yowzers! I’m in. 😁 I loved this app when I tried it, but didn’t want to pay for the full access. I’m 6 months into my Italian learning and wasn’t sure how the advanced features were. ☺️👍🏼🙏🏼
Thanks for your honest review. I already signed up using your code. It seems to fit with my style of learning.
I need something like this to learn Thai hahahaa
Thanks Lindie. I Love your videos. They're very helpfull!!
Hiii from Russia
Thank you for useful videos ❤️💜❤️
Hi Lindie, have you tried Innovative Language (such as Japanesepod101) and what do you think about it ? Would love to hear your review.
I'm trying it for learning Russian language, the audio is great and not robotic at all. Both male and female are real human voices.
Hi! Indeed - the Russian course uses native speaker voices in all the elements. In general most of the languages are such - but some are still in progress, and might have parts of it, that are not updated it. But yes, Russian is nicely all native :)
@@speaklyapp great! Nice app, keep going!
This app sounds so goooooood! I have given a try to some, but none has really clicked for me. So excited to give this a try!
Glad you think so too! What other apps have you tried? Other ones have pretty decent content but aren't so s m o o t h hahahah
(already downloaded and gave it a try!)
which Spanish does speakly offer? Latin American Spanish or Spain-Castilian Spanish?
Low-key calling out the green bird, I had to chuckle at that. I'm kind of intrigued by this app now
Wow I kind of want to try this although I don't really use apps!
I loved this video, greetings from Monterrey, yo hablo español y estudio inglés
i think adding different categories for the genres of music would be great, for the recommendations
Speakly suggests different genres. As you learn more words in the target language new recommendations are given. Songs are unlocked one at a time as you progress building up a library of songs and artists. It's a great feature of the app.
I always love your videos. You are my inspiration. I am also learning Spanish! I wish I could practise Spanish with you.
Hi, I just discovered your RUclips channel and I'm excited, because you are a kind person and I love the way you explain what you teach. You won a new subscriber.
Thank you for the kind comment, Jose! ✨
I've bought actually the year subscription and I must say I'm really happy with it. Music recommendations are great and I really like listening exercises. For now, I use it for Spanish but I have plans to learn French too 🤩
Lindie: Uploads new video!
Me: 12:20
it's amazing that this app has Estonian! i heard that it's quite difficult to find resources for that language.
Try learning Estonian for sure! - it's not such an impossible language to learn - you just need to avoid the 14 declensions :)
One of the few apps that doesn't immediately ask for a credit card, sadly a rarity.
I like that it recommends listening and gives some music suggestions to break the learning grind
I wish you could slow down the speech in the vocab
Goodness, you are adorable! And very talented in languages. You remind me of myself as a young lady...Especially your confession that you do not have visual 'Math' brain. 😊 Good work!
Nice hair cut Lindie. 可愛い❤️
I love La Bicicleta and Carlos Vives!!!!
Personalmente, estaré en camino me suena a calco del inglés. Yo diría "estaré de camino" o "iré de camino".
Oooh where'd you get your t-shirt?
I have a lifetime subscription.
Have you used it until now ?
I bought it a couple of weeks ago, it is pretty good, I am waiting to see what will be my level after a few months using it.
Please can you talk about what you use to edit your videos
Lindie, thank you for this review !!! I also wanted to know if you’ve ever tried Rosetta Stone and if you did, what do you think of it ?
Wish they had Egyptian Arabic and Turkish.
Hey Lindie, great review. Do you know of any apps similar to this that support Korean?
I downloaded it and it's really good so far. It only has 1 out of 3 languages I learn (german and I also learn czech and mandarin) but maybe I will but it after the free trial
Estonian AND Finnish. That's pretty cool!
Being Estonian and seeing you almost click Estonian, made me squeal out loud out of excitement haha 😄
Hahaha! Did you know even before Korean and French I was interested and tried to learn some Estonian in 2009? It sure is a challenge!
Ok, all in all, best app ever my Notebook.
God bless you Lindie. You’re so positive and funny. Great review. I like the app but I wish the voice wasn’t so robotic.
Hey @Bry - currently only some languages have a robotic study area voice, but it will be exchanged by June-July in all languages. Just a heads up :)
Thanks for the review. V.Informative and useful.
Glad it was helpful!
Now I'm tempted to try Estonian again. I will say though that I don't think it's entirely fair to compare a free app with one you have to pay for. Quite frankly, I should hope a paid app is better than a free alternative. Otherwise, what exactly are you paying for?
People are often quick to remind us (those who might not say the best things about Duolingo) that it is free, but a few things:
Off topic but did Lindie dye her hair? It’s looks different. But it looks so pretty!!
Lindie cut her hair!
@@LindieBotes so pretty Lindie!!! 😍😍😍
I'll be sure to visit their blog!
Ugh!!! I love this app and i wish they had Korean 😩😩😂
Do you have any recommendations for Korean?
What's your shirt say? I guessed from part of the letters, that it's a Bantu language, and when I saw the whole thing and searched the web it came up as Zulu.
I'm a Spanish native speaker and i think that the voice in the app was rare
I downloaded it and tried for a few days and also felt like it was one of the best apps I had ever seen... Then my trial period ended and I started using it on the free version, to which I was sorely disappointed. It's *very* limited, you can't use the speaking part nor many other functions that make it stand out from other apps.
While duolingo is very basic it's understandable why it's the go to app for most people, I think it's indeed the one that offers the most content on its free version.
lol love the shade to duolingo
Tout le monde est content :)
You can check this easily from the account settings - thanks, and I will check this personally right away :)
lindie, please help me 😅 can you tell the sites/apps you use as a community and to check our writing? i saw somewhere but i cannot remember 😹
Thank you for this review! I didn't know about this app and I'm planning to try Estonian with it. Previously I have read a couple of good text books but after that I haven't been able to find anything useful for this "not an absolute beginner" phase. Does anyone in the community have good tips for other apps / video channels / books?
What is the channel name
