    My son is a junior rugby player- Colts level. All the way through, sicne he started playing contact, I have been very disappointed by the referee's and touch judge's management of dangerous play. I would have thought at junior level it is even more important to have zero tolerance for things like spear tackles. My son had a neck injury with a spear tackle off the ball and broke his collar bone with an illegal dump tackle. HE was inches away from a head injury both times. Both players not sent off!

      @@charlottescott7150 Frustrating to hear, but refs at junior level aren't pros and can't see every player with the same attention as their parents so its a tough one.

      @daibonehead 5 лет назад +2

      Jack Francis It is not a tough one. The instances that Charlotte mentions are probably crystal clear. There’s no way a spear tackle should go unnoticed or unpunished at any level.

    Healy is a decent pundit but his leading questions 'e.g. scare mongering' on concussion were asinine. Warburton seems like an intelligent and genuine individual.

    • @alfredevans215
      @alfredevans215 5 лет назад +6

      and in regards to healys diagnostic test argument. 9/10 times its obvious that a player needs to be taken off. diagnostics is not the problem, its the culture\human element. from both the player and the management.

    • @alfredevans215
      @alfredevans215 5 лет назад +1

      furthermore healys argument that is a problem of the second concussion is false. the first contributes as much as the second. why not do as much as possible to prevent the first? less people will slip through to face a second.
      In response to the idea of a rapid diagnostic test. what sort of biomarker indicative of concussion could we test for? its a complicated phenomena that doesn't necessarily produce a molecule we can detect.

    Just a thought. As players are getting bigger and fitter and thus being able to hit harder for longer, would it be a bad thing if we reduced the number of players on the field? From say 15 to 13 (maybe lose the number 8 and one of the wingers/fullback?) Potentially limiting the amount of tight areas for constant big collisions to happen and thus enabling players to have more room to run into? Maybe it could allow a shift from the players needing to be so big and actually make them rely on the cardiovascular systems more (not saying that they already don’t though). Sounds radical but the way the game is going it could allow for more entertaining rugby due to more space and potentially reduce injury rates by reducing such tight collision areas. Also the idea of not being able to bring on more than 2 or 3 fresh subs unless someone is actually injured may be an idea? Nothing worse than seeing a fresh front row and 2 back rowers coming on 60 mins in when your gassed and they’re fully fresh.

  • @randyschwaggins

    Body injuries can be found in all sports...but the injuries we need to protect against are head and spinal injuries.
    Changes in scrum engagement have made differences to spinal impacts on front row players...but there is still a huge amount of pressure on their spines...I wouldn't have a problem reducing the relevance of the scrum or even changing the scrum to include less players and therefore limit the engagement forces on front row forwards.
    With head injuries...headguards need to be made mandatory at all levels of the game. Headguard technology has evolved massively since the original ones were invented...but rugby is the only sport where head injuires are common that doesnt use head protection...and this is crazy imo.

    As a 9 & 10 it would be a dream come true to have a maximum of 10 mins contact during the training week. Especially being in a team where we basically have a live drill where we just set up pods or pick and goes and run directly into contact. On what planet is there any position specificity to that?!

    At international level, recording "dominant tackles" maybe there's no need for tackles of this kind. I imagine these car crashes are not meant for the human body or head?? Just a thought.

    The fact the ref didn't stop play in England vs Wales when Johnny May was clearly knocked out and Courtney Lawes being taken off all in live play literally let wales win the game. The ref had no consideration for the players that game.

    • @Fordmister

      Ref has no obligation to stop a game due to injury as the physios can just come on and begin working on the player whilst the game continues. he only has to stop the game if play is too close to the injured player or if the phisios signal that it is something really severe that requires more immeadieate medical intevention. A player that is unconcios a mile away from the ball and an ankle injury fill neither of those criteria
