Chicago remake of "I'm a man" blows the original out of the water. The "Make me smile/more than ever" edited version was their first top 40 success. "Questions 67 & 68" their first release. Other dynamic song by Chicago: " Dialog part I & II", "Old Days", "Feeling stronger everyday", "Street player" (Great disco song). There are many more and I will be happy to suggest some later.

Although "Saturday in the Park" was the big single from Chicago V, I still think Dialog I + II is the best of the album.

Ages since I heard this, our "pep" band (marching band) used to play this at (American) high school football games in the ... gulp... 80s.

"Feelin stronger every day" from 1973 is another really great Chicago song. It's along the same type as 25 or 6 to 4, Not as hard rock, but very up tempo.

Chicago had a mix of jazz/rock/R&B, incorporating horns (trombone and trumpet), as well as sax into their music - not as background. Their early music, 69-78, was their best, and utilized all three of their lead vocalists. Long deep rabbit hole with Chicago - more top 40 hits in the 70's than any other group. Others: Make me Smile, Questions 67 & 68 (featuring horns), Beginnings, Anybody know what time it is, Lowdown, Poem 58, Saturday in the Park, Feling stronger every day, Old Days - probably their best.

Chicago from 1969-1978 with founding guitarist Terry Kath is an entirely different experience from the ballad band they became after Terry's accidental death in January 1978. They blended jazz, rock, blues, funk into a tremendous fusion. They originally debuted as Chicago Transit Authority in 1969 but shortened their name to Chicago after a threatened lawsuit by the namesake Government agency.
On their debut album listen to Terry's vocals on their appropriately titled song "Introduction" and the various instrumental segments. "Poem 58" on that debut album will blow you away with Terry's guitar on the opening instrumental section, pure funk and talent that inspired Jimi Hendrix to tell the band "your guitar player is better than me".
On their second album listen to the seven movement suite "Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon" which includes their hits "Make Me Smile" and "Colour My World". The suite really needs to be experienced in its entirety to appreciate the talents of these musicians.
On Chicago VII the first side of the first disc (another double LP as their first 3 albums were) is primarily instrumental. The instrumental track "Aire" also showcases their immense talents.
If you truly want to experience the heart of Chicago, their albums with Terry, from "Chicago Transit Authority" through "Chicago XI" will open your minds to some of the best music of the 70's.

You mean after they were neutered by David ‘Karoke’ Foster. Terry died, Peter took over and they became known as an East Listening band. Peter left and I am happy to report they returned to their roots and are amazing live.

@@Jude74 My wife and I went to see Chicago at Bethel Woods in NY, during their 50th Anniversary tour. PHENOMENAL concert, Doobie Brothers opened for them (as they did for Steely Dan the next year we went to Bethel Woods to see them, R.I.P Walter Becker). Most of the songs were their Kath-era classics, opening the show with "Introduction" and closing it with "25 Or 6 To 4" as their encore.

You should react to Leonid and Friends who do many Chicago covers along with Blood Sweat and Tears, Steely Dan, Tower of Power. They are currently touring in the USA but their covers are just stunning.

I guess only old-timers get the title meaning. We learned to tell time using analog instead of digital. Twenty-five or twenty-six minutes before four.

It's a classic. Listen to their early stuff, not the "If you leave me now" rubbish, they went right off the boil after that. Try searching for Leonid & Friends on RUclips, they do some excellent Chicago covers, I'm a Man (which was a cover of a Spencer Davis Group song), and Listen, they give you an idea of how they're played live.
Alice Cooper - Under My Wheels, The Temptations - Ain't too proud to beg, Sly & The Family Stone - Dance to the Music, The Damned - Neat Neat Neat, and many many more, lol.
I forgot to mention, 25 or 6 to 4 in the morning was when they wrote this song, 25 or 26 minutes to 4 o'clock in the morning, geddit?

I heard a variation of the story of the song long ago. I heard he thought it was 20 to 5, hence the 25 . Or 6 til four. Think of the hands of an analog clock , it makes more sense. Thanks.

Deep Purple? Cream? Try listening to Led Zeppelin's Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You. Then you'll see where that opening riff was lifted from. Can't believe nobody has mentioned it.
