Biggest problem I can see with the compass on the metal buckle is just that - the METAL buckle. Unless it's brass or copper or some other non magnetic substance no compass will ever work.
Aluminum, titanium and stainless steel are all compatible with compasses. Aluminum need to be thick or it distorts and breaks. Titanium is nice, but it's wicked expensive. Stainless steel is a good compromise.
I went through a para-cord phase and made myself a bunch of things, bracelets, lanyards, etc. The buckle whistle isn't very loud. I agree the fire steel buckle works better for equipment than bracelets and as a back up fire starter. The all in one survival bracelet is a great idea, but it isn't for every one. I found if I wanted a whistle, a compass and a fire steel full size works a lot better for me. A lot of things like buckles and compasses are being made in places where quality control is a secondary priority, at best. Saving money is all well and good, but survival and cheap go together like oil and water.
I make dangler knife sheath's out of survival bracelets. One for extra cordage, but mainly so I don't have to take my belt off to put a knife on. I put a D ring, or simply a piece of paracord thru the belt loop, and put the surv. bracelet thru the D ring/paracord. D ring's look a little better. Finally, I secure the surv. bracelet to the ring with a piece of thin wire (or even a bread twister). It really works well and looks good too. I use Hi-vis cord when possible for easy spotting if my knife were to fall (it never has in 5 yrs.) I would love to see you do a video making one of these danglers. It may help you sell more bracelets.
The trouble I find with butyon compasses is their exposure to other magnetic things. I bought the pfizer button compass years ago. It has a saphire pivot point and is brass. No dampening made me wonder often if the compass had "settled". I bought a strong magnet to realign the polarization in the event items I carry had shifted polarization. No joy. I keep the button compass on a pendant I made as a reminder that tools not properly protected of cared for can fail. As always, YMMV. Cheers.
Great video and review John, thank you for being straight up and why when things ae junk. I like your bracelet just the way it has been. "If it ain't broke don't fix it."
Hobby Lobby sells a three pack of button compasses designed specifically for survival bracelets. The only problem was that the three compasses showed North in different directions. LOL they are inexpensive though!
Hi. Great video , and I do respect your experience and opinion but I have a few issues with what you said. First I have slender lil girly man wrists so its true that the buckle would be too large for me. I bought a premade bracelt with one off ebay and it was so big I wear it around my ankle in the warmer months and it fits just fine, although there is less curvature beon the ankle. I believe that the ferro rod was so badly chewed up for two reasons: Cheaply made and the serrated edge of the striker. As for compasses a few years ago I bought various sizes of them in quantity off ebay and a tiny model I got cost like 27 cents each and they are extremely accurate. You dont use these compasses for map read, jus a general sense of direction. I super glued one on my buckel on the whistle, away from the hole of course and it works just fine under field conditionss. Though the cheap lens has aqqquired some scratches. I took a lucite signal mirror from UST purchased at Wal-Mart and cut a piece off, genly heated it to fit the curvature of the buckle and gled it on then trimmed the cut outs with an x-acto knife. It all works fine except the whistle which is weak at best. I would It's a good back up to have but no bracelet will ever replace a well made Altoids kit.
I am not sure everything included in my true survival bracelets will fit in an altoids tin.. I may have to try that and see now, haha. Thank you for watching and for your comments.
The adjustable shackle is great in theory. But, they are actually quite a pain to take off and put on in my opinion. I use a similar one on the collars I have made my dog and they can be a pain. Thank you for watching and for your comment.
I have a watch band with the ferro rod buckle. It's not really bothersome because I have a bigger wrist. The only real issue with wearability I had was that the buckle would pinch my wrist when putting it on until I got it broke in. As for the ferro rod, I give it a 'meh' rating. It'll work in a pinch, but it wouldn't be my first choice.
Thank you for your comments. I have made people many bracelets, and I would say the average to large wrist size still isn't big enough to make the size of this buckle appropriate for the comfortable fit my bracelets offer. The pinching makes perfect sense because the bracelet isn't being made to come around the underside of the wrist properly with this buckle size. Like you say, the ferro rod is good in a pinch.
+CommonSenseOutdoors I agree. If it were curved, it would be much better. Might have to pick up a few of them and tinker a bit to see what I come up with.
The campus dont work on mine an i figerd that out right away. Just as well i can navigate by sun an stars that you have to teach your self. An i replaced the hook line an lour with ones i can rely on .makes sence be safe .prepair !
Sorry about the annoying outdoors, should have done it at the dinning room table I guess.. Can't keep everyone happy there I guess. Thank you for watching and for your comments.
I don't think he was whining, I think he was referring to how close he was to the running water which was completely unnecessary and pointless. It made him hard to hear. I love the sound of running water but when you're trying to explain something you should probably back up 10 or 15 feet.

I don't trust some one in China, who has a entire ocean and complete anonymity on their side, to make quality control a point of pride.
