This is what all Country Music should sound like! It's time to bury that crap that still sounds like the '50s and has nothing to say about anything. There are some great sounding artists out there and it's about time they got heard. James is really talented, great lyrics, great music and he sticks it to you in such an interesting way that it's hard to not listen over and over again! Okay, get off your tired old butts and get your brain into gear and listen to one of todays best Country musicians. When your done with James go try some Ray Wylie Hubbard and after Ray start searching, it's all there, you just have to open your eyes and ears. Let the old music die, as if it wasn't already dead.
I would agree with you that much of todays “country” music doesn’t have much too an about too much. Heck Most music doesn’t really have too much of anything worthwhile to say, but hey everyone likes something different right? Let James and those like him be our little secret club to enjoy and it remains pure of heart and original. I’ve only been listening to McMurtry for a year or so now but, damn what a catalog of music! Anyway I wouldn’t call him country, though his music does have inflections of it. I hate to pigeonhole anyone, especially someone like this who not only has such an influential of different styles but can also effortlessly move between them. I would define his sound more of “Roots Rock”/Americana/Folk with styling a of blues, honkey-tonk and western. He’s more than just a songwriter, he’s a storyteller. That’s what I have always looked for in music. He takes U.S. on these adventures and personal experiences of the characters in his song through their own lense.

I came across James a year ago. I'm in my 70s in Oz and he is such a brilliant lyricist.
