Gordan Ramsey would have a field day with that Hotel Hell episode. "Bloody hell! You can't slaughter your customers! How do you possibly expect to develop customer relations that way?"
I wish you had gone over the fact that no one knew the floor plan of the house because he kept hiring different companies to do the construction after the previous builders quit after non payment. How he got away with stealing a safe is also pretty interesting.
Okay, but how do you do that more than once? "This dead body is my other brother, can I have more money now please? ...Yes, I'm sure I took out a policy for him."
As long as you used different insurers and poor working women that no one would miss, he could just say it was standard practice for his company to insure his employees and say they died on the job.
eric mclean how would different companies know any better? They didnt have internet that shares public records all over like we do now. You go to a different state you can be a completely different person if you wanted to be.
"Hi, this is Jack Smith, I got a room in your hotel? I got up to use the bathroom, but now I'm lost. I'm at a big stone door with four indentations in it, and there's a wooden disc here about the right size to fit in the indentations ... Okay, and what do I do once I find the other three? ... Well, obviously, but in what order? ... What do you _mean,_ 'that's part of the fun'? I still need to pee!"
Something this video neglects to mention is that TB was claiming a lot of lives, so people disappearing wasn't so uncommon, and communication was not as rapid as it would later become.
His legend is wildly exaggerated and the number of people killed by Holmes is mostly fluff. His hotel was more of a tool for scamming money from insurance companies than it was for killing people.
So...how many murderers sold cadavers of their victims to medical schools and _got away with it_ , given that this guy was only caught for an unrelated crime?
In high school I did a psych paper on H. H. Holmes. One of the most interesting parts about his story is after he got caught, and near the end of his trial. The widow of his old partner gave a heart wrenching testimony that made everyone in court weep, except Holmes, who stayed emotionless (as he was reported to be during most of the trial). The next day Holmes (I’m not sure if he was being questioned, but I believe he was just at his seat) broke out in tears, and started sobbing. Later he admits it was all fake and a ploy. The biography I read said that he faked it cuz he noticed the amount of support the widow was getting during her testimony, and thought if I could get them to cry, then they will be in my side. (Not what I think just what I read)
He was obviously a psychopath he sold fake juvenating elexirs and fake jewels downstairs. He also openned patent shop to get ideas to murder people. One showed him an oven to make glass which he used to get rid of bodies including the inventor. I think its creepy that till today psychopaths are not even regarded dangerous even if there caught, as they lie perfectly. We should put those people away for good they cant change. He was greedy beyond. I hope we will having fmri scans in future to catch them early on. Before they murder but many or all harm their sourroundings with their constant lies and chaos they create.
When I read about him initially few years back I found out he killed his last victim in Toronto and I live here, so I was curious where the location was. They have changed street names so it was a bit difficult, but after a bit of research I pinpointed the location, the house doesn't exist anymore, now it's a high rise condo building where I lived in!! Always gave me the creeps after that parking my car in the underground parking, knowing a child was killed there. If anyone wants to know the current address is 37 Grosvenor, in Toronto.
I recently finished reading the book The Devil In The White City, about both Holmes and the incredible historical importance of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Great read.
When he says he was hanged, I felt pissed why he wasn't made to suffer and given a more horrible death, just then he says that the freak's neck didn't break and he struggled for a full 15 minutes, gave me relief (& I could see a smile on Simon's face while he said this).
I'm currently reading Devil and the White City which is about both HH Holmes and the making of the Chicago Wor;d's Fair. This video was timely...if a bit of a spoiler. Enjoyed it as always.
This really reminds me of the Red Panda Adventures episode "The Curse of Beaton Hall." I can't help but wonder if that was an intentional omage/reference on the part of the show.
"Devil in the White City" deals with the subject. Really really good book. Highly recommend it. Very excited about the movie that's about to be made based on the book. Also, I think it's supposed to be "Benjamin Pitezel". He was one of Holmes' lackies.
Adam Ruff yep he's pimping out the same material on all of his channels lol. It makes sense from a financial viewpoint but it gets repetitive to the viewers who watch every channel.. But he does make a rather unique prospective about them on each channel so it doesn't bother me much. I liked the biography of him better though much more detailed.
"yep he's pimping out the same material on all of his channels lol." Actually TIFO is run by a completely different group than TopTenz/Biographics. No relation other than the same host. ;-)
Today I Found Out ah I'm not hating I think the contents great, it keeps me entertained and every channel has a unique perspective of the stories that are being told. I just assumed all the data was gained at once and combed through for use in different videos since that would save on research time. Ah you know what they say about assuming it is good content nonetheless and this is definitely a channel I'll continue following. Just don't get rid of Simon worse comes to worst make a genetic clone and teach it the Simon ways. I do appreciate the response didn't think you'd ever reply to this haha. I want more seabiscuit stories too!
He killed one of the children in Indianapolis, Indiana. The little boys remains were found in a chimney in the basement and on the grounds. The house was torn down, but the couple who bought the current house on the lot say it is haunted. There have been ghost hunters there, etc. It is creepy to walk by knowing what happened there.
I really love these videos i learn alot about thing a I had no idea about and more about things I did that you just don't learn in school or even in tv documentaries
2:00 So.. How did the contractors that build it not notice something was off? ''Hello, I'd like a hotel with airtight, soundproof rooms and lots of other traps please'' OK, we'll make up some plans and present them next month! :D
Did he build murder castle himself? I don't see how an entire construction crew, architect, and contractor could build that and not for a second think there was something up.
Apparently he changed construction companies frequently to avoid suspicion. I wouldn't be surprised of a lot of the stories about the hotel are greatly exaggerated, anyway.
I put off an entire presentation on H. H. Holme for a week, finally presented and then this video comes out. This would have been hella helpful a day earlier
H.H.Holmes fascinates me. Partly because he's from my home state but also because I have no idea how he would get away with any of the shit he did today. He killed so many people... and the way he built his castle would never be allowed today. Like... there have to be so many inspections of buildings like that and with social media he could never just disappear someone. Not even to mention that DNA evidence would be able to help figure out how many people were killed and who they were. Plus the bodies and skeletons he sold could be identified more readily.
As much as I enjoy your videos, I feel as though I've seen you do this video before. I know you did a video on him on Biographics, but I could swear you did one on him on this channel. Still, I did find it interesting. Terrifying individual!
jaspr1999 Simon hosts for 3 different channels that are owned by three separate companies. All three wanted a video about this interesting man. Can't really blame them.
jaspr1999 Thank ya! I assume all three do their own research and scripting as well. So the info will probably vary a little in terms of what's mentioned.
Hollywood has been planning to do a film about him, so he is becoming a hot topic for documentary. Over a year ago I joined a script reading for an independent film about him as well. The producers were eager to get it out before the Hollywood studio version. It was pretty gruesome. There are some who suspect he didn't die during the hanging and resumed his activities. There are also those who suspect that he was Jack The Ripper, claiming that the Whitechapel murders coincide with when he was visiting London. I don't know, myself, how much solid evidence there is for that claim.
Besides for money grubbing companies (which, admittedly is basically all of them, and definitely all the insurance ones), insurance makes a lot of sense for the individual and for society. The individual gains the security of knowing that his prize possessions (house, car, etc.) can't be completely lost, it's at least insured. Society gains by distributing the consequences of the unlucky, which everyone is, eventually, and that person not having to take years to dig themselves back out of a problem, they were insured. Insurance's purpose is to even out the high points and the low points, to try and not let the really bad things that do happen completely destroy the lives of those affected.
What is decay? What is radioactive decay and how does it, or other decay, relate to time passing and how things just get old? If there is a video about this please point me to it!
Anyone who builds crazy buildings for their own insane desires is fascinating to me. Unfortunately his desires were a lot more sinister than Sarah Winchester's.
Hey I wanna know why the term “welshing” or “welching” became slang for not paying a debt? Like did some notable Welshman refuses to back out of some epic debt? Gimme that story
Simon hosts for more than one channel. All three channels are owned by different companies. Simon just hosts for them all. All three wanted to make a video about an interesting man.

"Bloody hell! You can't slaughter your customers! How do you possibly expect to develop customer relations that way?"
Ahahahaha
Ha
*Clever pun about Holmes committing murders instead of Investigating them*
US HH was a gentleman Sherlock was human sewage!!!!!
I wish you had gone over the fact that no one knew the floor plan of the house because he kept hiring different companies to do the construction after the previous builders quit after non payment. How he got away with stealing a safe is also pretty interesting.
How do you use corpses to make insurance claims? "This dead body is my brother, can I have my money now please?"
Timothy McLean I'm pretty sure that's how it worked back then.
You didn't even have to leave the state to change names back then...in a large city like Chicago you could just move to another part of the city.
Its disappointing that the house of Holmes is gone. Torn down before wide spread photography existed. Would have been useful for investigation.
That house must have been like something right out of Resident Evil 7.
"Hi, this is Jack Smith, I got a room in your hotel? I got up to use the bathroom, but now I'm lost. I'm at a big stone door with four indentations in it, and there's a wooden disc here about the right size to fit in the indentations ... Okay, and what do I do once I find the other three? ... Resident evil is a toned down version of this
glad to hear his neck didn't snap. imagine the terror of asphyxiation and not being able to do anything about it. fucking deserved
Moral of the story: mass murder, OK, insurance fraud, not OK.
People are cheap to make. Insurance isn't.
John Burgess Ain't that the truth.
Moral of the story: insurance companies make a better investigative job than the police.
Ppl care more about money than they do about other ppl
I find it interesting that no red flags were raised by the multitude of disappearances around his "hotel", but insurance fraud got him...
I think he got caught for stealing horses or something.
Well some of the people that went missing were vagrants, and labor workers, so most people didn't care at that point.
So...how many murderers sold cadavers of their victims to medical schools and _got away with it_ , given that this guy was only caught for an unrelated crime?

American Horror Story Hotel (Season 5) is based off of this. I reccomend giving it a watch as its quite interesting.
Grand Mage Evan Peters played HH Holmes so well, didn't he.
That season was phenomenal! Scrolled down to find this! 👌🏽
The best serial killers never got caught.
When he says he was hanged, I felt pissed why he wasn't made to suffer and given a more horrible death, just then he says that the freak's neck didn't break and he struggled for a full 15 minutes, gave me relief
(& I could see a smile on Simon's face while he said this).
he's infamous, not famous.
k a y l e e he’s also the second best serial killer
UNKNOWN MEXICAN DERPY HOOVES jack the ripper. He never got caught
Justin Mielke some say they are the same person, he fits Jack's description and there is documentation that he was in England during the murders
infamous means he's more famous
+Justin Mielke Jacks overrated, there have been others who never got caught too
I'd have thought that calling the hotel "murder hotel" would have given it away to the police. 🤔
Nothing like working in a haunted post office.
Simon looked so happily smug when he mentioned Holmes struggling a full fifteen minutes when he was hanged. Lol, I love it.
I'm currently reading Devil and the White City which is about both HH Holmes and the making of the Chicago Wor;d's Fair. This video was timely...if a bit of a spoiler. Enjoyed it as always.
How has this guy's story not been made into a movie?
That post office must have been really fun to work at with all the haunting. XD
I think the correct adjective is infamous, not famous.
I read about this in novel Devil in the white city. One of my favorite books.
check out the book "Devil in the White City"....it's a great novel that includes true tales about Holmes
Yer Mama --Cool, a literary person!! It’s a scary book and so realistic when the story is from his point of view.
Yer Mama Holmes has always been a Personal hero of mine. Also Brigham Young because he was also a mass murderer.
There is an episode of the TV show “Timeless” which involves said murder hotel. Very good watch, highly recommend!
H.H. Holmes is the name I use for a serial killer build in Fallout 4. 30 plus settlements to build horror hotels.
Biographics' video about H. H. Holmes was awesome. Looking forward to this one! Commenting before watching.
I'm surprised you never mentioned "American Horror Story". One of their seasons is based on this horror hotel
Nowadays you cant even get planning permission for a wall!
Awesome Video, can you please make a long video about the Chicago's world's fair?
0:52 it annoys me that the pin isn't right in the bubble.
Jelly Man
Now it annoys me too, thanks.
Oh yeah no problem bro.
Accurate all the way through. Very impressive work
Hmm, now I need to look up which post office was built there.
Erik Larson's book, "The Devil in the White City," is a great read for anyone wanting more details about H. H. Holmes.
Holmes' hotel inspired the whole concept of a Haunted House attraction. Trufax
Is it ironic that Engelwood is the most violent neighborhood in modern Chicago?
I started watching your videos some time ago, and now I love them.
Also you earned a new subscriber.
The hotel part of this sounds a lot like that Lights Out radio show.
I feel like this is about the 8th video they've done on the same subject. It's cool I love this channel though
Adam Ruff yep he's pimping out the same material on all of his channels lol. It makes sense from a financial viewpoint but it gets repetitive to the viewers who watch every channel.. schooled by TIFO themselves!
Please do a video on Currency Exchange:
What happens to the original money, how the new money is generated/made.
All known facts.... Would be interested to see pictures of the interior of this awful hotel trap instead of blueprints.
Very interesting, heard a lot about H.H. Holmes but I love your videos and the way you present them
vsauce is doing serial killers now?
I remember reading about this guy, I don't understand how people were willing to build those rooms for him.
He hired and fired construction companies constantly while building so no they didn't know exactly what he was making
He struggled for 15 minutes before dying? Damn, that serves him right.
Your pages are awesome, both of them.
He killed one of the children in Indianapolis, Indiana. The little boys remains were found in a chimney in the basement and on the grounds. If someone insists on you getting Life insurance that person probably is not who you want to make the beneficiary! Thoughts from a *Serial* *Skater* .
I really love these videos i learn alot about thing a I had no idea about and more about things I did that you just don't learn in school or even in tv documentaries
0.39, The HAMPSHIRE CONSTABULARY FREEMASONS England are recruiting!!
Finally something to watch
2:00 So.. How did the contractors that build it not notice something was off? ''Hello, I'd like a hotel with airtight, soundproof rooms and lots of other traps please'' OK, we'll make up some plans and present them next month! :D
"Murder" sounds so much more sinister with a British accent.
Writ In Water that makes a lot of sense.
At first I thought it was going to be about Albert Fish.
Lol I’m not even subbed to you but managed to get here 13 min after this was uploaded
I did an essay on H.H. Holmes in the 10th grade back in 1999.
Daniel Thomas you’re an old fuckers
Steve Allen haha how old are u?
What an interesting idea for a movie! 👍
Can you imagine the Yelp reviews from the hotel?
There is a book about this called The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. It's a great read.
Devil in the White City gives a good account of this. There's a lot that wasn't mentioned here that was pretty interesting.
There was a mini serious on this topic that stated there is evidence of hh holmes may be the same person as jack the ripper from England
Devil in the White City is a great read about Holmes
I put off an entire presentation on H. H. Holme for a week, finally presented and then this video comes out. This would have been hella helpful a day earlier

Insurance scam? Lol all insurance is a scam.
word.
Agreed.
You pay them to provide you insurance, then you have to fight them tooth and nail for the service you’re paying them for....
Yup. It's why they take being scammed so seriously haha

now do one about carl panzram, he was fucking terrifying beyond belief and everyone should know about him!
Been waiting for this one!
best and most underrated serial killer!
I already know this story, but clicked anyway cuz it's Simon. :)
The scenario that he was possessed seems convincing
This is what american horror story hotel was about.
Im currently reading Devil in the White City and this crossover is really creepy...
Not really "one of the first", but more "first well publicized". Serial killers have always been amongst us since humanity began.
Must be the dark brotherhood because
Cicero was near his location.
I have adeja vuof this episode, was this re uploaded?
YAY IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
This guy must be where American Horror Story got one of its plot ideas.
300cmysrt8 yeah, i thought the guy was widely known because didyouknow exists and is everywhere
Yup
He was defo Jack the ripper too, there's a documentary about it from his latter day relative researching him.
He wasn’t the Ripper.
What is decay? What is radioactive decay and how does it, or other decay, relate to time passing and how things just get old? If there is a video about this please point me to it!
"The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson was based on this and quite good.
Go to where the hotel is today and all there is is a railway embankment.
Hunted post office!? 😲😱
If there was a movie about this, then I would go see it.
There is supposed to be one coming up with Leonard DiCaprio in it and Martin Scorsese directing.
A Post Office?
more like a Ghost Office
Simon, why is the water level in my Snowglobes dropping? Are they evaporating? They aren’t cracked and leaking. What gives?!
Anyone who builds crazy buildings for their own insane desires is fascinating to me. Unfortunately his desires were a lot more sinister than Sarah Winchester's.
Great content!!
Hey I wanna know why the term “welshing” or “welching” became slang for not paying a debt? Like did some notable Welshman refuses to back out of some epic debt? Gimme that story
Also his ghost was defeated by the Winchesters.
I like the fact based story. A lot of channels try to turn old timey tales into ghost stories. Just the facts, ma'am.
Holy shit this was a dark episode.
I am pretty disturbed.
Didn't you do this on Biographics..?
Simon hosts for more than one channel. All three channels are owned by different companies. Simon just hosts for them all. All three wanted to make a video about an interesting man.
Biographics and TopTenz are run by different groups than TIFO. They just share a host.
Already watch it on your bio channel, I watched all of them to date
