Costa Rican Gallo Pinto | Ready in 15 minutes

  • If you have been to Costa Rica before, you probably tried a Gallo Pinto. Gallo Pinto means spotted rooster in Spanish and refers to the speckled appearance of the cooked rice and beans. This easy recipe is served as breakfast in Central America, although most of us would probably prefer to eat this dish for lunch or dinner. You can serve this Gallo Pinto by itself, or add a fried egg, some slices of avocado and fried plantain. You can find the Lizano sauce on Amazon or you can use this recipe as an excuse to book your holidays to Costa Rica and buy it in a local store.
    Lizano Salsa on Amazon
    ⫸ INGREDIENTS (side dish for 4 persons or main for 2 - 3 persons)
    ● RICE 1 cup | 200 grams | 7 oz
    ● WATER 1 1/2 or 1.5 | 375 ml | 12 fl oz
    ● BLACK BEANS (drained) 1 big can | 310 grams | 11 oz
    ● BLACK BEANS LIQUID (only if rice appears too dry) add spoon by spoon until rice doesn't stick
    ● ONION 1 yellow
    ● RED BELL PEPPER 1
    ● GARLIC 1 clove
    ● CILANTRO aka CORIANDER a bunch
    ● SALT & PEPPER to taste
    ● CANOLA OIL OR OLIVE OIL 2 tablespoons
    SERVE WITH (per person)
    ● FRIED EGG 1
    ● FRIED PLANTAIN 1/2
    ● AVOCADO 1/2
    ● TOMATO 1 medium size
    ● HOT SAUCE a little bit
    ● CILANTRO as much as you like
    ● SALT & PEPPER to taste

    Out of interest how does the taste differ between lizano sauce and Worcestershire?

      Lizano salsa is sweet and has a tangy taste. It's made from sugar, vegetables, vinegar, and some spices. Worcester sauce has a bit more of a savory flavor as it contains vinegar, anchovies, tamarind, and some other spices.
      The main difference is that Worcester sauce is more savory, while Lizano salsa is sweeter. Also, the consistency of Lizano sauce is slightly thicker than Worcester sauce. All in all, they are very similar, and you can use Worcester Sauce for this recipe if you don't have access to Lizano sauce. If you do, I would recommend adding any kind of sweetness, like honey or sugar.

    What kind of rice do you use? I cook normally with jasmine rice

      I used basmati rice as it's more neutral in flavour. Jasmine rice is delicious but I think it is a bit too floral for this recipe.
