Yours is the best tutorial on trimming fig trees I have ever seen. I have a potted fig named Cineraria that I purchased two years ago. I get about a dozen luscious small fruit every year but was afraid to plant it, because I know figs trees can get very large, until I saw your video on pruning so come spring I will be planting my little fig tree. I find that when using play sand even fresh out of the bag you probably don’t need to use a screen or anything or worry about it pouring out the bottom of tub or a planter pot like an hourglass… In my experience, moist sand Doesn’t pour… It just clumps together and doesn’t go anywhere. Alternatively if you don’t put a screen in the bottom of that container, and then you lifted the container up and noticed that it started pouring at the bottom like an hourglass… That would definitely be a very clear indicator that you don’t have enough moisture in there. I hope that’s helpful tip

I have been watching your youtube channel. I bought some fig cuttings on Etsy and planted them in pots with a plastic bag over them to prevent drying out. It has been 100 degree in Houston. In 4-5 days, there are a lot roots above the dirt level but NO roots below the dirt level. Please help!
Many types of fruit trees have been grafted onto a specific root stock that helps prevent disease, controls height etc. In many situations "grafting" is the more appropriate technique. You can purchase root stocks for a rather low cost to graft onto. It's also possible to graft multiple varieties onto one tree in the same family. All the best!

I have a fig tree 4 yrs old that the fruit never ripens. The cold always get it.. If I graft a branch of a early fig ripening tree to it will I get ripened fruit from that grafted branch? What is your advice?I thought of cutting the tree down but I have invested 4 years into it.

It looks absolutely ugly, but the tree produces a lot of fruit that taste great. After propagating and establishing a robust root system, how long does it generally take to fruit? About your question on when will a fig tree Will produce fruit. I live in California.... Riverside. I got a few figs of good quality the first year from a 9 inch cutting. Tree is about 2.5 feet tall in one whole year. In 3 years my tree grew to 6.5 feet tall. I got very good ,big figs in quantity in 3 years. Got enough to make ten jars of jelly.
I was just looking at our fig trees. Both planted the same time...20+ feet apart... one took off and has produced the last 3 years. The other one remains stunted!? I'll probably try to take a cutting from the larger on and replace the smaller one!??
This may have been asked already but what do you mean by saying that has been washed? Meaning how do you wash saying do you use something chemically to wash it?
The bags of sand available for purchase will specify on the label if the sand has been washed/rinsed free of any salts. Water is all that is needed to wash the sand. Cheers!

Thank you! The limbs of the fig tree actually bend down rather easily. If there's a nice fig slightly out of reach that is my tactic. Sometimes my wife Alice will climb in the tree or use a ladder : ) Cheers!
Do not cut branches from all the way down, leave about an inch and cut, that will prevent deformation of the main branch in the future and protect it from getting diseases
How often do you water the sand, and can you over water it? This is the first time that I'm trying to root a cutting and I use 50% purlite and 50% vermiculite. Will that work? Thank you.
People try to tell me that figs are almost unkillable.. Well.. not for me. I've had 4 now and not one of them has survived it's first Winter. Each one I bought cost me between 20- and 45$. *cries . Figs are one of my favorite fruits, and I can not grow them.

In Riverside, California my fig trees are just about finished dropping their leaves --its, mid December. And it does not freeze here.
