I agree with you two - flex starts in Ontario are in need of some added professionalism, but they work great for beginners. I'm likely to stick with home course flexes from now on, and more traditionally run events.
I think flex starts are great for those new to competing and also for people who struggle playing two rounds in a day. I preferred the standard tournaments I played in but think having options, especially with how jammed registrations are, is excellent
Like Chris mentioned, it's great for beginners wanting to get a taste of what Tournaments are all about. Played in a Trilogy Challenge this summer with some friends and it was nice being able to pick a time that worked for us during the day since we all have kids/family obligations on weekends.
I play them all the time, maybe tomorrow, ZBOAZ. There was someone skirting the system, they and their group were handled. No more issues anymore here in Texas, they happen almost every Friday.
We’re running a fun tournament for our employees. Using a Flex Start allows us to accommodate all of the players work schedules. It’s definitely a convenience thing. Flex Starts should not be used in any serious tournament scenario unless you have staff on all 18 holes monitoring play and that’s not realistic. Thanks for the content!
I like the the idea of flex starts, and I don’t think there are as many cheaters as people think. We just don’t trust other people to be honest. However, I would much rather a big tournament with everyone starting at once because it feels more real and official.
We played flex starts in our weekly league a five years ago or so. I like the idea, but we were too few participants for it to work well. A few times i felt a bit left out because a small group of people often played together, both league and casual. I mostly have friends i play casual with, but they don't play league. So a couple of times I didn't have anyone to play league with, which actually made me wanna quit playing at all sometimes. Though I think flex starts is a good consept. But there has to be a good organization around it, so that everyone gets to play.
A flex start is a flexible tournament where you can go to the course and complete your round between “8am-2pm” or whenever the TD says. You don’t have a specific tee time and you can create your own card with friends or you can be placed with whoever is there at the time you go to play!
Only Flex Start experience I have was at 2019 Canadian Nationals, I had a great experience hopping on with whoever was heading out next BUT I could see there being issues if you bring your own foursome. My advice play with new players it’s more fun that way.
I've only played 1 tournament so far and it was a flex start. It was kinda cool but didn't really feel that special, like I was just playing another casual round with my friends. I want to see the atmosphere of a real tourney!
Flex starts feel no different than a league round and i think that's okay. So many different grades of tournaments, little bit of something for everyone. I personally like them because sometimes it's hard to commit to a full day or two of playing a tournament sometimes, so they scratch a competitive itch while letting me sign up same day for something i might not have known i'd be able to play til day of.

I prefer virtual UDisc doubles or small tournaments like a lot of places have been doing since the pandemic started. We only have one course here and it’s really busy so the more competitions are done at the players convenience on their phones the less the course gets clogged up or actually becomes unplayable for casual players.
I don’t see how a flex start promotes cheating, you still have a group on the card to keep each other honest. They did a few for an ongoing points series in Western New York and it was a great way to get more people involved I usually go for the earliest tee time I can get bc it’s fun to watch how others slot in around me throughout the day.
I think flex starts are fine but I don’t think it’s something that should happen in a PDGA sanctioned event. In unofficial tournaments, no problem imo.
If you are doing a fundraiser or a team building function, I say it's good, but for "real" tournament play? No way! Might as well give everybody a first place ribbon for "participation"....

Here in crowded Southern California, flex starts are great to fit in a bunch of players with busy schedules.

That’s essentially how they all are in Michigan

We played this course and loved it! Just avoid it after it rains lol. Nice vid!

Thanks for the reply! I’ve not heard of that being done in Maine. Usually they are shotgun starts with a morning, then afternoon, round.

YES LUCAS THANK YOU
You’re welcome
Where is the Kevin channel on RUclips?
What is a flex start? I have only been playing for 9 months. I have heard of it before.

No problem, I should have explained it in the video, silly me! Lol. Thank you so much 😊

What is a flex start ? Is it like a shot gun start a group starts on every hole ?
I'm wondering if you would say that you were playing safe, aggressive or how you would label your playing style for this?
Flex starts = donations

Because when doing a flex start you can be on a card with people you know. So, it's easier to collude.
how is Miss Frisbee not a touring pro?
She said she’s gonna play some next year. Looking forword to it.
I could mortgage my house and maybe I could afford a discmania tshirt too!

What is a flex start? Thanks
Here in Norway w had to have it because of covid 😫much better with real tournaments..to easy to cheat with flex
How does a flex start help cheaters? Wouldn't it be the same as having a tee time?
Just say NO to the flex start.
If you are doing a fundraiser or a team building function, I say it's good, but for "real" tournament play? No way! Might as well give everybody a first place ribbon for "participation"....
Flex starts suck. Definitely groups of cheaters.
I dislike flex starts for tournaments.
Cheaters and sandbaggers are abundant enough in tournaments. I dont think I'd be interested in a flex tourney.
Great bum
