It is popular because a qari can recite with it for long periods of time. It is most common to read with this maqam when reading ayahs which mention the discussions, thoughts, and regrets with regards to the people of Hell, may Allah save us all ameen. He recites examples of this maqam. He ends by a dua for forgiveness (hence same theme) in that maqam. wasallam.
