I genuinely have watched this 12 times now. The song is brilliant, the orchestration is insane, and Colton is... well... Colton. Insane.
I love the arrangement of this song... and Colton Ryan singing it... Somehow, Alice by Heart landed me here.
I am ages late to this but I'm so glad to have found it. The melody, the music, the song, the story, everything is so heartbreaking. The way Colton performs too, is so raw, so emotional. The orchestra, the arrangement, everything is perfect and his ability to live through singing and express the emotions is just cherry on top.
shoulda been in the westside movie with rachel

[I couldn't hear some words clearly so please excuse the mistakes, I just transcribed what I heard]
Guess that it's over
Hurts like a bitch
It isn't as bad as they say
All too familiar, barely an itch
It's not fair but unfair is the way
After all, looking back
This is all right on track
When you look at my life in review
Here's a page you could skip
This is barely a blip
But you're hardly amazed
Now you sit there unfazed
As my world falls apart
How's the view?
I'm surviving the break
Yeah there's more I can take
This is nothing compared,
Not when compared, to you
Caleb? Caleb!
Hey little Caleb, you don't understand
Oh, of course, no one thinks that you can
But deep in your heart, isn't this what you planned?
What you hoped when the summer began?
See you ____(?) me a curve
You did more than observe
No, you tore us apart and you knew
It's a trap that I'm in,
"Let the special kid win"
I am nothing compared to you
All these years by your side
I've been trying to hide
All the pain you've been putting me through
So I feel insecure
I don't live, I endure
This is nothing compared to you
To you
To you
To you
This is nothing compared to you
Who never knows I'm there
Who just expects me/it(?) to be
Who never learned to care
How the effects affect me
I'm pushing through alone
That's all I know how to do
I'm growing up on my own
I should be greatful to you
Cause I'm used to anger, brother
And I'm used to lonely, father
And I'm used to heartbreak, mother
After all this
After all this time
No, they won't get it
No need to yell
Imagine our roles were reversed
All this is nothing
This could end well
This is cake when you've dealt with the worst
Did you know I was there?
Did you try not to care?
Did you think you had one son, not two?
I spent years on my own
When you left us alone
Over years my resentment grew
Did you know as a kid,
There is one thing you did
There is one thing you taught me was true
Caleb's special and stuff
I'm not special enough
I am nothing because of you
@@dragonizk01 omg thank you so much! do you know anything about the context of the song? i fell in love with it but don't know the story behind it, either way thank you!
@@nicoleguarnieri8570 heya! glad you found it helpful. Unfortunately, I don't have any idea about the context of the song as I've never seen the musical before but it reads like he's talking to one of his parents here?
@@nicoleguarnieri8570 oh hey here i am a year later to tell you about the musical i wrote :P this song is sung by Michael, who has spent most of his life taking care of his older brother Caleb, who is autistic. this has been especially difficult for him after the loss of their mother, Audrey, when Michael was 12 and Caleb was 15. what's actually happening on stage during the song is super chaotic (in the show, the whole bridge section is a duet, there's a ton of prerecorded text that shows up in the orchestration) but essentially, what has happened right before this is Michael and his fiancee Chelsea break up, due to a massive fight they have about taking care of the now adult Caleb -- and it's not clear whether Caleb deliberately caused the relationship to fracture, as Caleb had become sort of obsessed with Chelsea after meeting her. Michael starts out talking to a mostly unresponsive Caleb, but as the song goes on, his memories collide with his reality, and he ends up singing to "ghosts" of his fiancee, his father, and finally, his mother.
also your transcription only really missed a couple of word things! "see, you threw me a curve: / you did more than observe, / no, you tore us apart and you knew."
and then "so i'm feeling secure-- / i don't 'live,' i endure."
oh also it is "it" in the line "who just expects it to be." maybe i'll type out the lyrics sometime, too, for punctuation lol
thanks for your interest!
@@heathcliffsaunders8101is there anyway to buy sheet music for this song?? i would really love to perform it for my senior recital!
