I would like to share my story. Im sorry that its a little all over the place lol. I grew up in a poorer household and so having money and being able to buy whatever I want was always very important to me. I, also being raised in a poorer household, learned poor money management skills and tragically fell into the consumerism trap (but as opposed to my parents I have very minimal debt). Something I've realized recently after pursuing different lifestyles and aesthetics is that I don't want a life where I have a lot of money. I want a life where I don't need money. A life where instead of striving for the newest pieces and habits of whatever new aesthetic I think will make me happy (since the last didnt) I am going to focus on filling my life with quality, practicality, and time. In this I mean that instead of buying a new pretty item for my house for example, I will look for an older quality piece that is practical to my life. Something important for this is to look for patterns in my current life. I tend to wear similar things and not touch the others, I tend to use a certain cutting board or spoon and not touch the others. So when looking at these items I find a pattern: I don't reach for my super aesthetic marble looking spoon when I cook, instead I reach for my wooden one. The reason for this, I believe, is I like the quality and stiffness of the wood one more, it's more practical. I reach for my super thick knit cardigan more than my other ones (even though I think its unnattractive) because its much higher in quality and is more warm and comfortable and worthwhile to wear. The quality and practicality of an item is what makes it worthwhile and in our life we should be striving for things that are worthwhile. Worth our time, worth our money, worth our space. Now to go back to a life without the need for money, in finding items like this I will only need to buy them one time. This saves me a lot of money as I won't feel I need to go and buy new ones when the last one "didn't work", I won't be relying on money to make me happy or to attempt to make me happy as it will be a means to practicality rather than joy. With having the higher quality pieces that are for practical use I'll have more time and security to then pursue things such as crafting. In my opinion crafting/creating is a major thing for humans and so crafting our own bread, repairing a hole in our pants, creating a recipe, crafting a bowl for our kitchen, or painting a painting for a loved ones is one way to find fulfillment and requires little to no money. A life where I don't need money is a life where I have a lot of time.
I think happiness is a temporary thing, like any other emotion. I definitely want to get financial independancy by investing but I don't want to chase after something while thinking "I'm only going to be happy when I achieved that", no. I'm living NOW and I can give myself happiness NOW. I.e. by buying my favorite chocolate this month even though it's more expensive. Investing. Taking breaks and allowing myself to relax. Listening to my feelings and setting boundaries etc.
I worked really hard and got promoted up the ranks until I had a 6 figure salary. It was fun for a few years, but what is often not mentioned is, that level salary comes with an 80 hour workweek. When you calculate the pay per hour it was about the same as where I started. The workload wore me down and hurt my health. I was able to retire early, yes, but at what cost? All the pressure caused high blood pressure and that caused kidney and heart disease, so after 6 years of retirement I’m not even well enough to travel and do the things I planned.
Very true. Emotional freedom is important and it will help to work towards that first/simultaneously with financial freedom. You will always struggle with emotions. This is part of it. This is always going to be a part of you
Wouldn't the better comparison would be Middle income versus Higher income in regards to this video? Everyone would choose to be rich rather than poor lol
But, that's obvious though 😂 However you'd be surprised that some people are actually scared to be rich due to a number of reasons. But....they don't wanna be poor. No one really wants to be poor. One last note....rich doesn't have to be millions or even half of a million. You can be rich with even $80k yearly. And damn near poor with $2M...All dependent on the individual's lifestyle and habits.
That's not what he's talking about in this video. He's talking about when you reach the point that money is not going to solve your immediate problem and when your needs are fully met. At that point, increasing income will not change your outlook on life. He's suggesting that before you reach this point, work on your emotional freedom because at the end of the day, the emotional freedom is where the happiness lies.
That study is outdated. in expensive cities like Toronto (Canada) you need to have a 200K+ so you could be able to buy a house and live a comfortable life.
I made it to financial freedom 3 months ago. It took me about 12 years of grinding, but it’s totally worth it. I don’t care much about what money can buy, I still live below my means, what I care is that I’m no longer forced to do things that I don’t want to do. Some people love their job, but I never did. All the jobs that I had were soul sucking. My only way out was grinding, saving as much as I can and investing.
I went through this, I left my job in 2016 and out of fear went for another one, spent one year there and they let me go but I have never gone back to full time work. I have started my own business which has done well and hasn’t done so great, I work a part time job now and I’m going to school. I say all that to say that yes I have spent a lot of time in these last few years on emotional freedom. It’s a lot of work to change the beliefs at your core and understanding that we can be free and fully accountable for our lives and happiness.

Your videos are like a mashup of all my interests altogether (minimalism, stoicism, self development, financial freedom). I'm happy you were born 😁
when you chase anything, you are simply kicking it down the road .....live NOW be happy with the NOW.....your imagination surrounds you and you cannot chase it - enjoy this facet
There are some 🔥🔥🔥🔥 points in here! - Your primary goal should be to seek emotional freedom - you can still work towards financial freedom I don’t make it your primary driver - Unfortunately, hard work is not always tied to results and no one can promise you success just because you work hard.
Not chasing financial freedom because I think it is the key to happiness. I'm already happy. In my free time anyway. I've achieved my personal goals already. I want financial freedom to alleviate the stress of bills. That is literally it. I do agree though that if you aren't content in general that you have bigger problems than financial freedom.
at first I was chasing financial freedom and realized after 2 years in college that what I really wanted was to be happy and doing the things that I loved.. btw this content a great reminder for me Thanks!
I agre with what you are saying. I believe that you don't want to chase money throughout your career. Chasing money does not guarantee happiness. My background is very similar to yours. I'm first generation of parents who immigrated from Hong Kong, graduated from college and working as an engineer. I'm much older, but I took to heart a comment from a high school teacher. Find a job that you enjoy doing, and you will never work again. I still enjoy working with technology. A lot of friends have all moved on to upper level management, but I didn't really want to do it because I enjoy getting my hands in the technology.
As someone who is “free”, you need very very little to enjoy life. Nothing is as satisfying as knowing every day I wake up, I tell myself what to do for 24 hours. Learn to appreciate just being alive and you won’t NEED anything but the basics and ENJOY them.
1:41 that comment is what hits close to home for me. I also grew up in a family where we didn't have much money, my parents were immigrants, and my dad had to work in pain staking manual labor because he never got to go to college.
Great topic - how to find the balance between job, personal life, financial plans and milestone, happiness? The answer is unique for every person and many people are against Financial freedom just because they fear to miss to live the moment and to spend on latest phone /car/make up/restaurant etc etc -and this is not bad if are happy with. No problem for people that love their job and want to be there until are 67 years old. No problem for people without debt. Or with debt and don't care about. No problem for people that are waiting some inheritance. Or people that are not waiting it at all. In my case financial freedom will bring more time for what I love and fullfill me: volunteering, sport, time with friends, reading, travelling. None of these are my job so I keep a big saving rate and a small expense level and to not neglect my loves. I found my balance, and I think anyone can find it.
The secret of happiness is to enjoy what you have. You set your terms, you’re the owner of your time, you determine what to do and when to do it. That’s pure life 😎 thanks for the video
I made and saved enough money that I was able to put a good size investment on stocks and crypto(50,500$ worth) that I live off day trading, I don't even spend more than 4 hours a day making and planning trades.(and I'm not even good at it) I still make enough money to live off and still invest my profits on more investments. Been living free for 2 years now being a "deadbeat" and man I forgot what it's like to work for someone and having to wake up to a alarm lmao. Life is good. now I'm working to just to be the best father possible for my kids. Another thing is when you have so much free time that staying healthy and active takes no will power. you just get the urge to run or workout to not feel like shit sitting around all day. Otherwise having the will power to go the gym after work is near impossible for most people.
Spirituality sadhana can make emotional freedom like breakfast. What I mean is emotional freedom that you mentioned is simply spiritual sadhana, you do this in your life, you basically achieve emotional freedom already. I have achieved emotional freedom through spiritual sadhana thru practice of emptiness meditation and understanding of cosmic existence also thru spiritual education
I have heard about this around the $75k, although I don't think this number applies to the San Francisco Bay Area, considering the cost of living is so much more expensive here.
This just reminds me of the seven areas that Dave Ramsey says you can have goals in: Finances, Spiritual, Family, Career, Social, Mental, and Physical. I have since learned about two others from another source and they are Romance and Recreation. I think a few of these have their own places for helping with emotions but Emotions could be its own category too.
According to one inflation calculator (in2013dollars), 75k in 2010 (when the study came out) is worth about 95k today. That would sound about right living in big cities in the US
@Vincent Chan I definitely agree that Financial and Emotional freedom are important together. Initially, I mainly focused on financial independence with little improvement. This year I been putting more focus on my emotional mindset. Surprisingly, it’s been making the journey to financial freedom more enjoyable and I been receiving more fun opportunities to grow financial without being stuck to a 9-5 schedule. Hope we both get to an emotional state we want to reach.
0:44 "High income improves evaluation of life but not emotional well being" by Daniel Kahneman. So in other words "Don't go the money route" --THB. But "Count the cost, less you be laughed to scorn" -- THB.
I spent a decade of my professional life miserable, read The courage to be disliked, went to therapy, switched to a less stressful job which I still dislike but I'm reminding myself what I can afford thanks to it. I'm reasonably happy yet discontent with not having financial freedom and that's ok because it means I'll keep working towards it. There's always something missing; time, money, people, health etc so if you only focus on lack then you'll always be unhappy
Last year I got so caught up in my finances in an obsessive way. I decided I wasn’t going to work on building my financial freedom until I healed my inner self. I didn’t want to think of money as the solution to all my problems. Over a year later I feel as if I healed enough and I’m ready to welcome in this next phase in my life 🙏❤️
Hey man, I’m writing this on my lunch break and just randomly came across your video. Your words hit home during the “emotional freedom” part. The whole video actually. Honestly I can’t describe it. Thank you for this. 🙏🏼
I was thinking about a whole bunch of points throughout the video and you wound up hitting them. Like financial freedom does need luck, also there is still a decent likelihood that working hard towards financial freedom, does not result in financial freedom. I commend you greatly for saying things and speaking the truth anyway despite how unpopular it might be before you hit upload.
There is a new study associated with the happiness study (title: Experienced well-being rises with income, even above $75,000 per year) published by PNAS this year. It suggested that happiness doesn’t plateau at 75000. It’s just a reference, it’s you that determine whether 75000 is enough for you at the end. 😝
I love this.. I'm not about to worry and stress myself because I'm not wealthy.. to me health is wealth.. I'm not about to over work myself and work for a job that I don't love.. I am responsible for my own happiness no one else.. yes money makes life a lot easier but so does having a peace of mind.. I will not spend my life chasing and stressing over something that's man made and I can't take it with me.. most of the time all money is used for is to buy products. That's all I see on social media buy this buy that.. that's not why we are on this earth..
Thanks Vincent for this video, you just don't know how this impacted me with my search for financial freedom and realizing that for so many years I did meager steps towards my emotional freedom.
I dont want a predetermined life. I have goals and dreams and this one life. I grew up in the United States with my mom, but my dad moved to India and became a priest. He found himself, traveled the world and experienced his life (unfortunately, without me). I want to be able to just live, like he did. I won't have children until I'm ready, and when I'm ready I'll share my world with them. I want financial freedom so I can make an impact. Emotional freedom is something I've been working on since I was in high school.
That's such a realistic reaction to your future self. If my future self were to travel back in time to tell me all these I would also be like " Are you done? Let me get back to slogging away at work."
Can confirm- a lot of supermarket frostings are not good for you (Vegetable, Soybean and Cottonseed Oils, Mono- and Diglycerides, Corn Syrup, Yellow #5, etc)
Duhh... being depressed with money and time to soul search is a whole nother story vs. being depressed with little money and an ahole boss. Money+time in abundance= is amazing (for me)
Being present and grateful everyday when you’re chasing goals is very tough, an art form that I think take a long time to get good at. Emotional freedom is a great term I haven’t heard it that way. Amazing content!
Have I told you that I love your videos. I become motivated, filled with hope and confidence. Predetermined vs Self determined really hit home. What. If. Such a powerful statement. Sending you positive vibes from South Africa. 🥰🤗
I didnt work for a year having money in my bank and just slowing taking away from it and I was super depressed. I tried so hard well still trying even now with a job for a 'purpose' to be happier.
"You are going to be exactly same person with exactly same issues that you had before. Just minus the job and minus the money problems." The second sentence contradicts the first, since you already state that a given person won't have money problems thus that person no longer will have same issues.
I think spending time with friends and family is key to happiness. Working on hobbies also. I believe having enough time and money to enjoy your life is important too. Financial freedom is good too. Also, maintain your health by staying fit. Financial Freedom is good if you want to be able to quit your job that stresses you out.
Wow Vincent, thank you, i usually don't comment on videos but you've completely changed my views on life/financial freedom and helped me out sm. THANK YOU, you inspire me.
It's not about the money itself it about what you do with it. If you reach financial freedom without a goal to do you'll loose. I've figured out already what I want to do before I even focused on financial freedom. Look for your interests then focus on financial freedom.
Mindset is everything - I kept hearing this my entire life but the lightbulb went off in the shower a few months ago, and I've taken the steps I need to unlock maximum happiness by living in the moment. Thanks for the video.
Ive been binging on your content. So unique and different from every other RUclipsr that talks about the FIRE movement and other financial freedom topics
After decades of working, I've discovered that I'm happiest with a goal and actively chasing that goal. Once I became "financially free" I found I still needed goals and to "climb a ladder", any ladder actually. Actively advancing myself in some way, but, financial freedom IMHO, is the bedrock for this. Either by working more or at higher paying jobs, or by lowering your cost of living, you need financial freedom first. It's a lot like Maslow's hierarchy of needs, you need food and shelter before you can move up to existential thought.
I am 27 years old never went to collage and it would appear every job I have landed at just wasn't right for me weather it was because I was a disposable temporary employee, horrible management or unfair circumstances. I'm at yet another temporary job and it's going fine this time actually but sooner or later they will just let me go.. I am about to start selling books again with amazon fba to try to make income as well as keep a job until I can feel good enough to stop working for some company that doesn't care about me but only about their goals. I just want to spend my life on my goals and follow my dreams I don't know how much longer I will be alive and on my deathbed I'm gona regret not chasing my dreams. Sometimes I don't find books at one location but that's why you have to go to different stores. I just feel this inner peace when I am at Goodwill scanning books with the peaceful music playing especially when I find more profit then my job would pay me for a whole day in less then half a work day. I hope one day I can live my life on my own terms. I have alot of experience selling with eBay toys , games , and anything that I can find a sold comp on. Thank you so much for making this video it really is helping.
The RUclips algorithm must have read my mind, just yesterday I thought about why financial freedom doesn’t really make that much sense, and now I get that video on my recommended, I gotta say, I totally agree with you on the emotional freedom part, actually I made a similar video to this one two months ago explaining why happiness is an illusion if you always chase happiness and don’t try to be happy right now. Imo more important than financial freedom is a fulfilled meaningful life and I think that is achieved by working for something you think brings value to the world, therefore, for me, financial freedom means working for myself because then I have full control over my life and I can work on something meaningful. Anyway, great video man, I really enjoyed watching it ✌🏼
Marcus Aurelius' Meditations really help me in my journey to emotional freedom. It's mainly about discerning the essentials (finding joy in less) and taking charge of your reasoning--that glorious space before I react to the external world. ON POINT LIFE CONTENT AS ALWAYS! U DA MAN, Vincent!
"It is not easy to find happiness in ourselves and it is not possible to find it elsewhere" This statement speaks truth. Emotional freedom from depression, hopelessness, Chains from your past. It is not an easy journey but, It brings one closer to knowing that all things are possible!
Emotional freedom is a great concept if you manage to truly understand what it means. Some years ago I got out of depression when I took the reigns of my emotions. It is not like blocking your emotions, or the infamous "just stop being sad". It is like bending the stream, remembering what you actually want to feel, creating a small angle, that will grow the further you go. Emotions are for the most part our reactions to the world. We as human beings have a distinctive ability to modify our reactions, to defy the simple rules of cause and effect and to act irrational, to break the vicious cycle.
I finally reached that >75k income but my work life balance and quality of life is terrible. Being on lockdown during covid 19 was the freest and most relaxed I have felt in a LONG time. I was happy during that time without all the stress, travel, and demand of work (I was still getting paid to work from home as I'm salary exempt).
When you said “before I share what that is” I thought you’d say “make sure you hit the like and subscribe button” you never said that and thats refreshing :) great video please make more
I wish I understood my situation on the psychological side but this seems to be on the right track . I currently am on a sprint to pay off my debt which I started 8 months ago . I payed off my mortgage , my jeep, voluntarily repossessed a vehicle I didn’t need ( it sold for more than what I owed at auction so I got a check for it ) , and last 2 credit cards I had . All I have left are 2 vehicles which have 1.5 apr on them . I’ve never felt so empty ever in my life . I don’t understand what I’m going through . Maybe it’s like withdrawal from an addiction. Although I’ve never consumed alcohol , tobacco, coffee or drugs I’m sure spending money can be an addiction. Idk
After watching a few vids I’ve subscribed. I like the way you put thoughts and words together. Things I’ve figured out but can’t word it and here you are doing an amazing job putting it all together. Thanks Vincent.
Had a lot of rich friends and they were train wrecks. You really gotta keep your head straight or that money will destroy you. Yes I still want money but this guy is right. Emotional freedom is priceless IMO.
Financial freedom for me is not having to shave off years off my life stressing out from work, and to not having to worry about being able to live comfortably without working. 75K in today's economy doesn't do anything towards that. You still seem young, but in my age, your body begins to fall apart and you start worry about whether you'll be able to continue to work, even if you wanted to. You can't afford to stop working altogether with 75K.

Think financial position/hapiness is a mindset and willingness to adapt. Too many people get stuck in a mindset of doing the same thing over and over again thinking it will lead to success. True hapiness comes from constant failures and be open to new situations/possibilities until you find some that works for a while.
So.... I agree with moving from around 35/yr to 80ish making me really happy. Funny thing, 80ish to 150ish made me equally as happy and I still want more. So... money sure makes me happy and it has been the answer to essentially problem that has presented itself.
I think it’s important to view money more as a tool rather than the way to happiness. Money gives us more opportunities to explore and determine what might actually bring us fulfillment. Finding happiness in this world is so much more complex than having money.
it is absolutely a tool, it can be a tool for great things and for horrible things...it all depends on what you do with that tool :) But, like with every tool, there is more then one. :)
Don't think I've ever heard someone explain the cliche's of life this philosophically. I really believe that comes with the experience you have had that provides a more accurate analysis. Thank you so much for these videos, subbed!

- Your primary goal should be to seek emotional freedom
- you can still work towards financial freedom I don’t make it your primary driver
- Unfortunately, hard work is not always tied to results and no one can promise you success just because you work hard.
Wow, this is so powerful. I had a very hard childhood and this is exactly what changed me for the better. I just couldn´t describe it.
True, u dnt have to wait for certain thing to happen before u can be happy. Just be truly happy unconditionally and be self appreciating
That’s pure life 😎 thanks for the video
... Unless you're married, of course.
Right on…it’s not money…it’s the freedom that money brings which leads to happiness 🙏
Eh.. don’t you need financial freedom to do that 😂
@@boddisk marriage is overrated. why would you want to be tied down with responsibilities ?
That would sound about right living in big cities in the US
Correct I was just going to say that about the money inflation, now it would be damn near 6 figures especially in places like NY and CA
Awesome video ❤️❤️❤️ thanks for sharing
Lovely video brother .thanx

RUclipsr winning money off of your pain
Not just happiness but security to not be afraid to fall into debt unable to do regular things or provide for the ones we love
Thank you for making this video
thank you for watching Michelle! I've always wanted to visit Malaysia - I heard it's a beautiful country.
A lot of people want a good lifestyle but the way they spend can't see them get that lifestyle anytime soon the better rich invest more and spend less
I invested in both Stock and Cryptocurrency but I see Crypto doing more better and profitable to me
Investing in cryptocurrency is one of the best chance of making money 💸
I wanted to trade Crypto but got discouraged by the fluctuations in price
That won't bother you if you trade with a professional like Mr Walter Peters
I heard that his strategies are really good
Wisdom!!!!! Thank You❣️
Duhh... being depressed with money and time to soul search is a whole nother story vs. being depressed with little money and an ahole boss.
The truth is, being happy is hard, and life just can't be always happy, sometimes you need to be sad, lazy, disappointed etc
Life is about experiencing and enduring it all.
Gratitude and being content is my aim.
I didnt work for a year having money in my bank and just slowing taking away from it and I was super depressed. I tried so hard well still trying even now with a job for a 'purpose' to be happier.
Thats what i go through now. So needed to hear about emotional freedom. Thank you!
This is so insightful. The concept of emotional freedom is very enlightening. Thanks for the video !!! (+ the formula is so on point)
"You are going to be exactly same person with exactly same issues that you had before. Just minus the job and minus the money problems."
The second sentence contradicts the first, since you already state that a given person won't have money problems thus that person no longer will have same issues.
That's fantastic to hear :) thanks for sharing and watching farzad
I've been learning the lesson of emotional freedom. By the way, God makes the process faster.
Thank you Vincent. You seem like someone that'll be really nice to talk to.
Ive been binging on your content. So unique and different from every other RUclipsr that talks about the FIRE movement and other financial freedom topics
I love how impatient you look in that outside shot 😂
that wasn't acting LOL it was getting REALLY outside and I already took so many video shots that I wanted it to be over with
I've heard of this saying before, "Happiness is an if-then, cause and effect, it's pretty hard to achieve if every time we attain it...we raise it."
Many missed the point of the graph and the video to argue specific numbers. It was simply explaining the law of diminishing returns.
Never thought of freedom in that way.. eye opening for sure
Anyway, great video man, I really enjoyed watching it ✌🏼
Found you on my discover page. Very grateful to have passed by your content and to see an Asian brotha represent 🙏🏻
I hear what you're saying. I'm a pretty happy guy already but I still want money to take vacations and buy useless stuff.
Amazing production and quality. No jibbrish comments of any sort. Right on point. Subbed.
I love myself and my job more after I had achieved my FU number.
I won't quit my job because it keeps me social and my brain active.
When you said “before I share what that is” I thought you’d say “make sure you hit the like and subscribe button” you never said that and thats refreshing :) great video please make more
Vincent, this video is such an inspiration! I loved how open and sincere you are. 👍👍👍
3:00 to 6:30 is really eye-opening..
Idk
I am happy in all the stages, but I want all the resources that big companies can provide you!
After watching a few vids I’ve subscribed. I like the way you put thoughts and words together. Things I’ve figured out but can’t word it and here you are doing an amazing job putting it all together. Thanks Vincent.
It's not about the destination, it's about the journey.
Had a lot of rich friends and they were train wrecks. You really gotta keep your head straight or that money will destroy you. Yes I still want money but this guy is right. Emotional freedom is priceless IMO.
Loving these new philosophical type videos Vincent!
thank you bryan!
The way you use sound in your videos is so damn good! Love it
Financial freedom for me is not having to shave off years off my life stressing out from work, and to not having to worry about being able to live comfortably without working. 75K in today's economy doesn't do anything towards that. You still seem young, but in my age, your body begins to fall apart and you start worry about whether you'll be able to continue to work, even if you wanted to. You can't afford to stop working altogether with 75K.
You probably live in the US, there are so many cheap countries you can move to when you retire

@@Abroadinkorea711 you are probably comparing 1 bedroom in the expensive areas like NY or cali to some cheap place in other countries, and thats just not a good comparison. for places like SK/japan, if you cant speak the language fluently you would probably end up needing to live in expensive cities where there are a lot of foreigners. those places are just as expensive.

Great video. Spiritually, “I’m not lucky, I’m loved” -Jonathan McReynolds. So my 3rd piece of your formula would be faith instead of luck. 😉. Thank you for your insight.
Ive come to realise over the centurys...
That money provides security and love provides happiness.
you are going to make it big, The reason is your are very intelligent young man!
“How do you know what I want? “Haha I only want to be able to enjoy more of my time.
100% agreed!
Think financial position/hapiness is a mindset and willingness to adapt. Too many people get stuck in a mindset of doing the same thing over and over again thinking it will lead to success. True hapiness comes from constant failures and be open to new situations/possibilities until you find some that works for a while.
couldn't have said it better myself nathan :) How are you doing?
Interesting 🤔
Thank you so much for these videos, subbed!
thank you so much, truly appreciate it :)
Can't agree with you more about the formula of financial freedom, especially about a factor of lucks.
Hey Vincent, just subbed today. Wanna say thank you for the hard work you put in with these videos. Sleep well at night knowing your work on here does indeed make a difference. You're awesome bruv 🦾
