Get a stabilized camera to make it more smooth though.
A friend and I explored Rice airbase in the 1970's. Needless to say, it was in a lot better condition back then. The runways and roads were in pretty good shape, unlike what you saw. We found 50 caliber ammunition not far off one of the runways. I took one of them. The gas station in town was open and maybe another business. Hard to remember 50 years ago. Also, just to the East is the Rice Divisional Camp. By the way I still have that 50-caliber bullet. Thank you for posting the video and bringing back memories.

My father went through desert warfare training out there. Ironically, they shipped him and his German accent to Guadalcanal as a Platoon leader instead of North Africa. But originating out of the Philadelphia area, he got hooked on the desert and returned there after combat operations in the Solomon Islands came to an end for him, and two nuclear devices ended the war with Japan. As a kid, Rice was a fuel stop for us when poking around the desert. My father knew the area well. The last time I stopped in Rice must have been 45 - 50 years ago. Thanks for the nostalgia.

Always amazing to find things like this but during the war we had hundreds of WW-2 Army-Airfields that are abandoned across the country. Some turned into modern day airbases. I am an AF vet and have explored many of these sites. We've got 4-5 in Arizona alone. Alot were auxiliary fields. This field seemed in almost excellent condition. Many of these fields are crumbling. The foundations most likely are barracks for the troops. Most barracks and military bases were built as cheaply as possible then. Many were tarpaper framed wood structures not meant to last a long time. Perhaps the duration of the war and not necessarily for long term use.
Yea there is a lot more in the Desert Training Center that I want to explore, sites of three or four massive divisional camps and a couple of other aux airfields.
@@backroadoddities Near Yuma, Arizona there is an abandoned field once called Dateland Army Airfield right along I-8. Not much left of the airfield as it is mostly crumbled away. Another near Barstow, California. There is an existing concrete wall at the Dateland field that was used for rifle range training.Its about the only thing left standing. From the air you can make out the triangle of the field but if there wasn't an Interstate exit you'd miss it. Not much left. Near Ajo, Arizona there are about 4 auxiliary fields that were connected to Luke AFB near Phoenix and right off the Barry Goldwater Gunnery range in remote stark desert restricted land. From the air (Google Earth) they look like triangles.

Thanks for an interesting video. I first passed through Rice in the early 1980's. I had forgotton those buildings but I remembered them once I saw your photos. It was a spooky place. Completely silent, except for the occasional truck passing on the highway and the wind whistling around the old buildings.

I like that propane campfire / cooking fire setup because there sure isn't much firewood where you go. Some of those concrete foundations may have been for fuel tanks. I can just imagine the tent city that was out there for the troops. Safe travels buddy!

They had huge light field on end of runway so planes could see it, knob and tube was used WWII, prob was a building for generators too

I think what you thought was a tower base was a base for a diesel generator.

Yes and no, apparently the plans were put on hold back in 2014. But that could also change in the future. It sounds like it probably won't get built because the developer wanted more tax credits.
Probably burnt for the scrap metal.
