NOTE: At 6:54, my editing software messed up the placement of the text. It's meant to read "to match the whirlwind of changing events in the air, the music will need to match every development." Sorry that I let that one slip through!
I was going to make a joke that Sakurai really needed a break because he was writing words on top of words. The episode is still great though.
Haha, he's started to go a little loopy :)
I was thinking that too, that it was part of the joke of Sakurai tired AF xD
i was hoping to make a joke about how it wasn't "clearly written" like you said
Bruh
Honestly, I always just imagined the development as Sakurai running into the character design room with whatever weird Ideas he had.
"Have you guys ever played Kirby and the Amazing Mirror?"
"Yeah?"
"Literally just do exactly that."
"Okay, you guys know Demeter?"
"Yeah, the Greek goddess of nature."
"And you know atomic warheads?"
"Wait excuse me?"
"Space nudist firebender."
"I-I'm sorry what?"
"DID I STUDDER?"
It really is amazing how he completely embraced the quirky nature of the story and characters of the first game, but amplifying it with his own touch, really goes to show what an outstanding designer he is.
"Do you remember that fire blob boss from early in the game?"
"Yeah?"
"BRING HER BACK AND MAKE HER SEXY"
"E-Excuse me!?"
"JUST DO IT"
@Chocobo Von Hauske Yeah, it's impressive how unique each of the different characters are and how they mesh with the tone, but there are points where the game just gets straight-up WEIRD.

Everytime iwata is brought up in game development he is always doing something incredible. R.I.P
I love kid Icarus uprising so much, to hear about this game's development is the most amazing story ever. I must thank Mr. Sakurai for making my favorite 3DS game game I have ever played and hope to see another one for the switch
Wes3 Same! Kid Icarus Uprising was literally my childhood, and I hope there’ll be another one in the near future
Not only does Uprising have the best voice acting in gaming ever, and not only is the English voice acting leagues better than the Japanese voice acting, but it's also the only game I've ever played where voice acting straight up improved the game
YES
Persona benefits from voice acting in both aspects
Fire Emblem Echoes is great as well.
@Samet Hayranoglu If you actually knew how the Japanese voices sounded to the average Japanese person speaking, you wouldn't listen to them. Plus that's not always true. It is sometimes, but not always.
@Samet Hayranoglu How to spot someone that hasn't played the game
This game has, in my opinion, one of the best OSTs in all of gaming. It is superbly sublime, and the graphical quality of the game itself far outstrips almost every other 3DS game. To this day, it is my favorite video game.
I love that game I never get tired of it!
WAUthethird Ah Same! Amongst the incredibly unarguable points you made, Uprising is absolutely my childhood video game. I just hope they make another one sometime soon, rather than another twenty years later
This game and the last of us I have to say that they reach a totally perfect score. I can't think but wonder why Nintendo hasn't announced a sequel yet. I'm tired to see all the time new Mario and Zelda games

Quite a nice video! I'd like to point out that Pit was a newcomer in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, so Mr. Sakurai had already put a lot of work into reviving the brand and reimagining the characters. I imagine that had something to do with why he chose the Kid Icarus franchise.
Yeah, I wish this video had mentioned it. Feels as if a piece of the puzzle is missing by not doing so

This video was great! As a die-hard Kid Icarus Uprising fanboy, I'm glad to see content about the game being uploaded. However, I do have one eensy complaint (no problem, really). When that sheet music popped up, I was really expecting the main theme. You see, I'm currently working on arranging every piece in the game for an orchestra, and it would have been wonderful to see the actual main theme to (shhhh...) maybe get a bit of a shortcut. As I'm sure you're aware, that was Palutena's Temple. No hard feelings, I was just a little disappointed, that's all. Thanks for the awesome video. 👍
Yeah, sorry about that! I needed a visual of the main theme's sheet music, but I couldn't find it _anywhere_ online, so I cheated a little. You caught me!
Wait... The 3DS was planned since 2008???? Wow...
When a console is released, they start plan the next.

This is one of my favorite games of all time and I love almost everything about it. The gameplay is super fun, the voice acting is one of the best I've heard in my life, the music is amazing and the characters are just some of the most likeable in existence. My man Sakurai deserves a break.
I absolutely adore Kid Icarus Uprising. Simply put, it's easily the funniest game I've ever played. The voice acting is the best in video game history, no contest.
What is so good about the voice acting? I hear everyone saying they are really good, and I’ve never played it.
I got kid Icarus uprising when it came out and I still play it AND still have a blast with it one of my favorite DS games ever and to think that I learned about Pit from Smash Bros brawl one of my favorite series
4:44 I actually enjoyed Uprising's story and how it tied into the gameplay
Was looking forward to this after last week! Sakurai's perspective on game design is so honest and genuine. I also love his subtle shade to what was probably sm64 ds
Yeah, definitely. One part of an interview about this game stood out to me a lot - it was about difficulty (and I'm paraphrasing here) but basically he was like "Miyamoto doesn't like to give the player many options because he wants the core experience to be absolutely perfect, whereas I think that the player should be given as much freedom and choice as possible". That section of the interview was pretty much the motivation for that end bit about him + Miyamoto. Because as much as I love me some Miyamoto, I think Sakurai's perspective about these things is incredibly interesting and sometimes a little better. I mean, I don't wanna pit them against each other because they're both incredibly talented, but I find the differences in their perspectives to be very interesting.
Thomas Game Docs I agree! They have fundamentally different ideas about game design, both of which have their tremendous strengths, and neither of which fit together perfectly. I think we still have yet to see Sakurai's very best, where he's truly given been a full set of resources and freedoms.
Kid Icarus Uprising is one of my favorite games. I really hope that we get a sequel for the Switch or some other console.
I need an ICE CLIMBER GAME TO BE REIMAGINED
Ice climbers needs another game
With better controls
Hopefully one day Sakurai gathers a humongous team to make a sequel of Kid Icarus for the Nintendo Switch after when he gets a long vacation of course
Kid Icarus Uprising is an amazing and underappreciated game. The gameplay is super fun, the difficulty control allows it to be as easy or as hard as you want
ahhh i remember when i first played this game. my god was it the best thing ever. i played it non stop, every second i had the chance to play it for a whole week, and luckily i had a week off from school at the time.
the gameplay was great and the multiplayer aspect was even greater imo. the amount of weapons you can choose too? hooo boy, you would definitely find one you're comfortable with. you got your long range, close combat, speedy ones, slow ones, hybrids of close and long range but sacrificed for speed and/or damage, and vice versa. i can go on, but you get what i'm saying.
the story was ok, nothing mind blowing, but the banter and incredible voice acting definitely made it funner, even if it doesnt fit the atmosphere of literally killing off some of the bosses you fight. granted some do get resurrected, so maybe thats why they can have light discussions with each other.
and even with the basic game stuff being awesome, the game's graphics and colors were so appealing and there were still small cool stuff, like the idols (similar to trophies in smash) and the challenge board. (also similar to smash)
yeah. this game is hands down one of the best games i ever played, and this might not happen, but im in the camp of waiting for a switch remake, or even better: a sequel.
Thomas, I really liked this!! Your voice is very soothing, and I love that you cover these topics. You have earned yourself a new subscriber my friend!
been waiting for this, looks good!
Thanks!
I'm not gonna stop bitching im internet comment sections about there not being a sequel until a sequel happens! And that's a promise!
Haha, I'd also really like a sequel! Sakurai certainly knows how to make a good game!

I love kid Icarus Uprising
I really enjoy your videos. I subscribed recently after having watching over the past week and I really like the style. I think you even commented on it at one point describing it as a paper cutout look. There is a lot of history that I already kind of knew about, but some of the videos I have seen kind of give me a bigger behind the scenes look that I was missing. I didn't even know what kind of computers Nintendo developed on back in the day and that was something I was actually curious about. I haven't played Kid Icarus the original nor the newer 3DS version, but I still find these videos to be enlightening as well as entertaining. I love your cute "bye" at the end of your videos. Thank you!
I have disabled my adblocker for RUclips. Honestly though, we will just have to see how long that lasts. Please consider making a Patreon!
I just hope Hades was joking about waiting another 25 years for the next game...
Edit: I love how you added in the game’s main theme on piano at the end.
You forgot to mention that a Kid Icarus game was planned for the Wii
One of my favorite games of all time, and tied with Pokemon X and Y for favorite 3DS game. First played it last year and do not regret buying it at all.
Keep up the excellent work! Love to watch them and learn stuff in an entertaining matter!
Still probably the best game on the 3DS
I have one issue. You completely forgot how he was in Brawl before he appeared uprising. It creates some time issues that don't make sense
hes so... flamboyant. i love it
Interesting typo in the opening screengrab of the last video... What kind of Brit could forget the T like that!? (Also, the other contender for this game's adopted IP was Star Fox, but spaceships aren't as nimble as Pit needed to be. I'm sure a lot of increasingly desperate Star Fox fans lament this decision.)
Haha oops, didn't notice that! And yeah, poor Star Fox fans - at least they have Star Fox Zero...?
Thomas must have a huge library of stock office building pictures
People are asking how old Pit is. Kid Icarus: Uprising was created in 2012. Since Pit defeated Medusa 25 years from 2012, that would take place in 1986-1987 and since he has the appearance of a 13 year old, it's safe to assume he was born in 1973-1974 making him now 45-46.
so the idea that this game was supposed to be a Star Fox title was a lie?
Your videos are incredible and so underrated.
Kid Icarus Uprising's uprising!
I just want to make an addendum to the information you provided. early in development the game was actually planned to be a Star Fox game. You kind of glossed over that part early in the video and didn't mention it but that was the original development plan
It makes me so happy that people still care about this game.
Best game ever ngl
happy 9th anniversary kid icarus uprising!!! :3
favorite story, characters(pit & palutena are cinnamon rolls.:3) and music in a nintendo game.
Playing this game back when it came out was ace. Loved it and the stuff in Club Nintendo
I'm just here for your piano playing at the end. :)
Wasn't Sakurai interested in the Kid Icarus series since Super Smash Bros Brawl? So either his idea for the air land battle game originated since Brawl, which got him to design Pit and Palutena in smash, OR his initial revival of Kid Icarus in Brawl gave him the idea to make such a game
Great video! I always love watching them. It's really cool to see what developers think, despite it being summarized (perfectly at that). I wonder if you'll ever do one on Echo Shift/Echo Chrome for the PSP.
The difficulty slider is something a lot of games have been using. That doesn't mean one copied the other, but rather that it's a system that works really well.
However, I do see one flaw with it. It doesn't encourage people to try higher difficulties enough. If someone sees themselves as a bad player, they won't try harder difficulty levels. I know that one from experience.
It would be interesting if a game used the system in combination with another mechanic. It would let you pick the difficulty at the start of the game or level, but the game would then dynamically adjust the difficulty to meet the player where their true difficulty lies. Maybe it could even challenge them a little. And then at the end it would show a graphic of how the difficulty was dynamically adjusted throughout the level. It would give players a better idea of their strengths and weaknesses, as well as encourage them to try the higher difficulty.
Games often dynamically adjust difficulty already. Making it more transparent would just make it a lot better. And it would be perfect for making players more skilled at the games
You get better rewards with a higher difficulty, I think that's a good enough incentive. Plus the game recommends you a difficulty based on your performance on previous chapters.
@@j-rex229 Ah, I'm just discussing the idea of someone making a new game with this difficulty mechanic. A combination of a difficulty slider and a dynamic difficulty mechanic. I think it would be an interesting evolution of the already existing mechanic and I believe it could improve the positive effects.
love that word fun core
We should hold our celestial-horses.
If Sakurai ported Kid Icarus: Uprising to the Switch, the universe would literally explode due to the amount of extra-content we know Sakurai would add-on, to the already chock-full extra-content ridden game.
So... Shall we call Pit as Sakurai's adopted boi?
As far as I'm aware,Sakurai mentioned that Smash Ultimate will be the only Smash game to feature every character, meaning that there will be more Smash games.
Sakurai even straight up used “future titles “ in the treehouse event of 2018
"Extra life hearts"
...Thomas, have you even played this game?
Still one of my favorite games ever, even though I sadly have never played the original Kid Icarus or the second game, but I also don't think that the second game is really that important. Correct me if I'm wrong.
This game is the reason I bought a 3ds
My hands still hurt from playing this game

I loved kid icarus uprising and i still do, this love makes me deeply sad that there isnt a switch remake sigh........

This is my favorite game of all time. I NEED it to continue #KidIcarusNow
Let's hope in the future that Nintendo doesn't end up milking Sakauri for all he's worth like what Square Enix is doing to Tetsuya Nomura.

I love Dark Pit he's like shadow but a little more edgy
I never played a Kid Icarus game.. I play Pit a lot in Smash so I wouldnt mind giving his games a try

Thomas! You are good at playing on piano/keyboard.
It's cool how it was through the creation of Brawl the 3D design of Pit was created.
Also Sakurai = Daddy
4:34 My first thoughts where just. Pokémon Sun and Moon. xD
I want a Kid Icarus on the Switch by Sakurai. The controls on the 3DS are a bit painful with bigger hands.
Luckily I bought myself a 2DS this year, instead of switch...
my only reason was the price and that it's full handheld console with some cool games I always wanted to play.
Maaybe one day I will take one copy if I spot it on a shelf...
Again a great video and summary Thomas! Have a good day
It’s a good idea to buy it preowned. My experience with buying preowned games is pretty great! But that’s just my personal opinion
I don't know about you, but Sakurai definitely was interested in reviving Kid Icarus since brawl, when he still had total control of smash
Loved this game. Great vid
Pitt was so good in brawl, sucks he was nerfed cause he exactly fit my play style
Now all we need is a Switch port with splatoon styled motion controls because as much as I loved Uprising that shit gave me bad rsi.
That'd be great, but they'd really do good if they would do a sequel although that seems unlikely.
I love the series
Gonna leave out my random vent this time. When it's showing a selection of Japanese FPS/TPS games around 1:46 what the heck is that weird arcade-looking setup on the bottom right?
now that you look at a side by side comparison of Sakurai and Miamoto, it looks like Miamoto is Sakurai's dad.
