- from bare frame to the red carpet at the Philly Bike Expo. my pal Jordan Gomez and I build up my sample of the aluminum rigid 27.5 rim brake mountain bike that MTB hall of famer Frank the Welder made a run of 50 of for us. Pre Sale is November 18th, shipping a few weeks or so later. Connecticut River manufacturing!
Some bike build videos try to make the process look like a surgical operation in a sterile environment with a neat wall of Park tools as the backdrop. This immersive masterpiece is more like watching medieval field surgery. Just bite down on this stick while I saw your leg off.
DIVINE transmission from the pulpit of the all knowing one has me on the edge of anticipation Ramble oN PLEASE
This video is a gem.
24 minutes and 9 seconds of pleasures.
Yes! More like this. I love to build and see 'real world' type bikes! I want to see the specifics on Ronny's 'scorcher' fixed gear bike.
i went over this whole enchilada with a fine toothed comb filled with admiration
This whole video has the feel of a psychedelic movie from the 60’s. Love the bike , always enjoy your videos.
Bars look absolutely amazing, Love the authenticity of the whole build process dudes! My kind of ATB !!
who Else on planet earth can attain this level of brilliance ?
Such a great video and such a cool build. Amazing vibes.
The drilled out seat clamp is awesome
Nice build and lovely retro/ klunker.
Love this vid. I do grease my square taper, had Shimano 600 cranks with more than 20k miles, and changed out bb twice without trouble.
Inspirational video... I want to build one of these up🙏🏾🔮✨✨✨
Very calming video. I could meditate along to this. Should really be titled, “peaceful bike boys drill holes into a seat post clamp”
Greasing the spindle helps to alleviate creaks, or so I've been told. I was taught that anywhere metal contacts metal there should be a thin film of grease. For corrosion mitigation etc., but mostly as a noise cancelling tactic. I've been building and riding square taper for most of my life and I've never had a problem with 'pull-through' on a greased spindle, I feel like this problem is a function of over tightening, not lubricating. Love what you guys are doing!
Best of the Best. Love it. Remember well the first Stumpjumper in early 80’s..came with Mafac brakes and I think TA chainset. I bought a Second Gen. in mid 80’s with Specialized Cranks and sealed bearing hubs. I think one piece bar/stem. Solid bike. Then had the first Stumpjumper in late 80’s to use Shimano XT.....Finally built a Stumpjumper S Works Disc Brake frame in early 2000’s with Hope brakes, hubs etc. so have a bit of history with Stumpjumpers! Now gone back to 853 Stanton Sherpa Steel. P.S. always fitted square taper cranks clean and dry.
i clean my tapers with brake cleaner and install dry, retorque after about 30 miles. no problems ever and im using some real old bin find cranks.
Some parts of that creative process reminded me of the good time when bob Ross was on TV. Take a breath and relax for a moment. Thanks for sharing that. We ride the old stuff here too and became professionals in lettig look old stuff great again. I often think its technically superior to the new short lasting crap. Liebe Grüße🙋♀
absolutely! nice that there is an endless amount of mechanical fun to be had out there with these beautiful well made parts
I grease all my spindles, love spreading 25.4s out too!
Love the bathrobe as a poor man's kimono style.
Made with Love ❤️
you’ll never catch me greasing a spindle.
best xbike ever, thanks for the video
Nice video & cool frame. Light oil on my tapers.
I love this bike, great work, guys. I have a mid 90's specialized stumpjumper. I would love to know what bars you use. Cheers
Teamwork makes the dreamwork. 🌹🌹🌹

Gorgeous ❤
gorgeous - sano. always light grease taper
This video goes well with my small batch, barn made moonshine
holy fricken sheet
i apply grease to the square taper then wipe it off, so there is just a tiny bit of residual grease or a film as he refers to it. seems to work well.
One thing I learnt building boats is that you should never use graphite pencil on aluminium. It causes a corrosion/ weak spot and you will never get it all off.
I built and machined carbon fiber satellite hardware at one of my jobs. This is the main reason I'd never own a plastic bicycle. These days, bike industry QC is a bad joke in general. It's also why I dig real world bikes like Ronnie's. I was also a mechanical inspector. Nobody's fooling me!
We weren't allowed to have graphite pencils in our toolboxes or anywhere at the carbon shop. Im not sure why anybody would bother to mark carbon with a pencil anyway. You would hardly see it. The company supplied white pencils anyhow.
I was wondering about the derailleur hanger in one of the pictures I saw, now I understand...
Dude, RONZO, you’re a cinematographer! Go work that industry, too, if you haven’t already! They would benefit from your approach!
thanks! had a lot of help on this one from the other folks on the ride. pretty fun to have everyone take there own footage and mix it up into this steamy stew 6 months later
Beautiful bike!
Out of necessity, I did the 26mm bars into 25.4mm clamp thing, and, indeed, I felt like either the clamp was gonna snap, or I was gonna pass out. Finally succeeded, but I hope to never do it again 😂
I felt as though I might weep when I saw the Duralcan getting parted out. I had one in college that my dearly departed mother innocently gave away while I was living overseas. That bike still calls to me from time to time and I do miss it so.
its a bike I won't soon forget! taught me so much and went so many places.
Nothing is lighter than a hole! Speed holes rule.
What are those blue pants you are painting in? They look comfy. Big fan of blue and comfy.
Covet!
🤘❤️🍻❤️🤘
Gigglin Boys Club how I miss thee.
Looks like I need another bike 🤣
oh we spoke of you on more than the occasion.... would have been inspiring to the art fart to have your giggles. in due time!
hey what is that seatpost clamp brake hanger? looked really cool on the website. love the build ronnie.
hi Bryan --- its a nitto cable hanger thing. they make them in 2 sizes, this is the shorty.
Just file the chainring bolt holes oval. Ultra granny gears are nice when you get as old as me. Its only 1 freakin MM to file out.
(times 5) You can find 58mm 20 tooth rings if you look hard enough. Shimano made 'em too!
I also dig the Ritchey cranks. I use very similar 'old junk'. My garage is full of stuff I've collected for decades. No grease on the square tapers. It will eventually cause your arms to crack, if you install them too many times. Both those right arms were made by Sugino.
Love your build! I would do it much the same except ultra wide dirt drops. Is that a 'Switchblade' fork or a Bonty? Keith is one of my engineering heroes.
They don't make it like they used to!!
Instead of the drillium you really 'need' a Hiterite! Weight weenies always spoil a nice long ride!
worth noting I spilled a bottle of rubber cement on my files a few months ago --- classic. maybe I woulda greased up the elbow if I'd had a more cohesive (not glued) workshop lol. I agree on that 20T though! so nice to have ...
@@ultraromance Bummer! I hate when that happens! I'm still diggin' your steed though!

With first gen wireless XTR sourced from Japanese deadstock. See u there.
Them skewers are wrapped like my bacon. Delicious.
I ride a 90s MTB Giant when they were made in Taiwan before they became the megalith company. The frame and fork are steel but boy o boy is it light and smooth to ride. 4130 but light somehow.
Ages ago I read up there was a yellow frameset that was at the lighter end.
Is this the latest episode of Documentary Now!?

Респект вам Мастер❤!!!
Got to see this in person at the coffee ride in Philly. It’s interesting but that aluminum stigma would be hard to crush. Big tires would mitigate the problem but I think it’s stuck in peoples heads. -Hugh Janus
Lovely bike. What are those gorgeous bottle cages?
King Cage Iris cages made in Durango Colorado by another Ron ... or he was Ron before me ...
Greasing the taper is the way to go!
Love me a bit of Goatfuzz backing track
I genuinely wonder what the ratio of destroyed crank arms is between greased tapers cracking cranks and dry tapers fusing to cranks and stripping out extractor threads.
My personal experience is 0 to ~9 in favour of greased tapers never cracking versus cranks destroyed that have fused to BBs in various ways.
I've never greased any square tapers in 50 years of wrenching on bikes. Haha, that's a big no no! It's also an old mechanic's debate.
I've never seen a crank arm 'fused' or corroded onto a spindle either. I'm now a shop mechanic, just for fun. But I've never stored bicycles outside either, nor recommend it.
The biggest issues I've seen are caused by failing to torque your crank bolts regularly. They work loose. Use a torque wrench!! About 30 ft/lbs worked for me for decades.
I'm also a retired machinist.
My oldest cranks currently still used are Sun Tour XC Pros and Deore I've used hard since the early '90s. Did lots of gear experimenting with these. They've been on and off dozens of times. The end of the spindle is 1/16" from bottoming out on the bolt. When they bottom out, I'll trim the end of the bb spindle a little bit.
To be honest I use a super thin film of grease on brand new cranks now, never on used ones. So the jury is out.
I've always used a wee bit of grease, never been a problem for me. OTOH, as a guy who buys old used bikes for cheap, I've dealt with lots of issues where galvanic corrosion or whatever has froze aluminum cranks to steel spindles, and yeah.... some of those old cranks didn't make it.
you guys make me feel like i'm a fast wrench lol
team dry crank ftw
This is the way. 🤘🤘
Absolutely. In my time as bike Mechanic I have seen so many cracked cranks. But in defend of the greasing team, those were mostly cheap ones. I guess when you have a high quality, good fitting crank it just doesn't matter
Dry interface for spindle and crank. Pretty sure I saw it recommended that way by a manufacturer somewhere once, maybe Shimano? I’ve done hundreds of crank removal and installs and never had a crank frozen to a spindle. I live on the northeast and we see some gnarly neglected old shit. Stuck BB cups are another story.
Very light film on the spindle never had a problem 15:27
Hey Ronnie! What size do you ride ?
10:55 LOVE MY NIKE CRAFTS! 2023
THANK YOU
This is so comforting to watch and listen to.
with respect to the grease debacle:
I was ALWAYS taught "NO GREASE ON SPINDLES AND HEADSET CUPS"
somehow the frank zappa of alt cycling
What do you use to apply the Fluid Film?
Square taper needs friction. No grease. At all.
I ruined two drive side TA cranks on my Ritchey mountain bike in about 1980 by lubing the tapers and have never done it again…
Fuck yes
whose boots do you wear, Ron?
Does anyone know where teh Heart cabke carrier yolk is from? Cheers
So that was a thing...I was wondering if anyone noticed it was an Al Crust, and freaked out about it as much as I did when I got home on Sunday.
Do you still have that duralcan fork?!? Iv been searching for one in that color for YEARS!!
I do! im not sure if I am ready to get rid of it for sentimental reasons ... and its a nice fork.... but feel free to email me
@@ultraromance will do!!
Sent you an email!
whats are those grips??
oookayy...the burning question...who made that brass barrel adjuster on the funky monkey hanger?
Sal from Sals Bikes. they are very neat!
What brakes are those??
Dry crank for me please.
oh shit there it is. you could build a gravel bike from an old 90s mtb for free or buy a the same thing from you for 7000$
1st we must build the body
the debate rages between dissimilar metals. the electricians us no-ox-id or noalox. take your pick. if you ever get through Pittsburgh, let me know. i have four vintage bikes boxed up in a basement i will let you have for storage fees. one is a nearly mint aluminum AlpinStars.
all medium frames leaning to the large end. i'm in Boise and all i need is my Litespeed.
i would consider it very romantic if you owned them. way too expensive to ship.
What handlebar is that on there?
uncle Ron's orthopedic back bars. out of stock --- but on order for a year now
What are your handlebars?
Those are the Crust Uncle Ron’s Ortho bars! They are amazing!
@@AustinSpace20 Thank you. They have such a nice wing span!
No good views of the thumb or shifter set up you got there. Looks nice and low profile. Care to divulge ?
How long does the lanolin coat last?
folks treat the underside of their cars with it in winter, so I'd imagine a while. i just replied for fun after a year on my alumalith
What's the track playing in background at 5:10? 🙏
its the band Goat!
@@ultraromance Ah, Goat, they're awesome, saw them live in Manchester UK a few years ago, actually listening to the new LP at the moment. Really enjoyed the vid, btw 👍
Grease, helps with the crank aligning in plane aka no wobble.
sick video wish I could hear what you were saying
so do I! I have some work to do still with getting good audio.
@@ultraromance it's ok my man I still very much loved the video, just wanna hear your wisdom
Tom Sachs Nikes "general purpose" shoe went for around 350$ when this video was filmed.
Jesus, I should just live blog watching this. GREESE THE SPINDAL. (Except rene herts cranks, never greese cuz you’re doing wrong warenty void)
what fork is that
a fork we had made to go along with the frame. they will be available as a set.
@@ultraromance lemme get one by itself and a 2 tone fabio's chest in barbie pink and seafoam
This is like bible bike building. Preach!
gunslingers with handlebst tape
Always grease the spindle. Jobst Brant said so.
I learned wheelbuilding from Mr Brandt's book but never greased my spindles. He was an opinionated guy. Greasing spindles is one of the great bike mechanic debates of all time. Opinions are like assholes. Everybody's got one.
I Never got to go on one of the local Jobst epic rides because I didn't know the right people I guess. I always sort of resented that.
@@rollinrat4850 I learned wheel building from Sheldon Brown. Also, trial and error on bmx bikes as a child. I put small amounts of grease on my vans lug nuts as well.
@@brandonneur Sweet handle there my friend! I live for really long rides!
I love how Ronnie and Crust threw a spanner into this "steel is real man!" Don't get me wrong, I love steel but I can't get over the fact that its heavy and became too snobby and too rich for my taste.. Get over the hype of steel and aluminum frames are eveywhere for dirt bags like me. Its strong, light, and fast.
😂😂 This aluminum frame costs $2k 😅
@@shinhochulp Of course man. Thats Made in the USA. The proof of concept that Ron was talking about. The DUralcan. (not that bike though its already rare and probably expensive also) The Aluminum Specialized Hard Rocks from the late 90s are plentiful and cheap to score. I got a whole bike last week for "as is condition" for 80 usd) I will build that up and just copy the Ron's Duralcan concept. Though If I had the money I would buy that frame. Its gorgeous.
Steel IS real. Real heavy 😂
👓☕
Square taper and grease?? Do what Mr Campagnolo did - just run your fingers through your hair - that's how much grease. (That'd be black, Italian hair)
Dry.
I love aluminium. There - I said it! I recently happened to get back an aluminium frame I bought nearly 30 years ago and together with an obscure Orange F14 fork and some Renthal bars I had sitting in the shed I have built up what is now my favourite bike. That drilled post clamp is ace by the way.
Regarding to grease/not to grease spindle debate - I rely on the opinion of Jan Heine. He has written several times about this issue, for example in dedicated post on Rene Herse's journal 'To grease or not to grease?' and also 'Why Square Taper Bottom Brackets?' (I don't provide links because yt don't like'em).
What’s his opinion then? I tend to go with with the manufacturers recommendation since they designed and produces the parts and all.
If you can tighten a square taper crank enough that you pull the spindle through the arm, then you really have no business working on bicycles.
I’m a dry guy
Workaholics reference?
@@Joe_from_iowa Haha yup
Never did get a good look at the bike..
