Whichever team developed the remake did such a collective great job that I imagined that the designers for the original had a dream but were held back by the limitations of computer graphics technologies of the time (not just the limitations of the Mega Drive hardware).

Basic rundown of the differences between versions. Old Oak Tree: Its design now has a more elderly appearance with arms and legs. Partway through, it gains a jumping attack, and can do a drilling rush at 1hp. Jack in the Box: The goofy shoes are gone and its boxing gloves only come out during specific attacks. Fight is now 3D for some parts. Changes attacks every time it takes damage, including a sweeping attack, a spinning top attack, and a shockwave variant of the jump attack. Storm Men: More of them overall. Fight now has an underwater phase where the Storm Men will chase you as falling debris surrounds you. Can also do a tongue attack during the land phase. Licorice Dragon: Can't be damaged until it bites a platform, but luckily has way less health. Also throws -cookies- macarons at the platforms before biting, and has very brief chase sequences between hits. Oafish Clockmaker: Jumping on him no longer actually deals damage. Instead, he has a spinning attack which lets you deal damage by luring him towards a bell in a 3D section. Mizrabel: Drops the Kirby-style teleporting entirely in favor of longer and more varied ghost patterns. Fight is also in 3D, and platforms rise after every attack. Also she won't shut the hell up.
Gotta say, this was pretty darn impressive. Every boss captured the essence of the original but updated it for the 3d platform environment. If I had to be nit-picky, the dragon seemed somewhat underdeveloped and a lot shorter than the other bosses for the position in the game it was. The rest more than made up for it though, and that final battle was incredible.
Castle of Illusion on Genesis is a stone-cold classic. One of the greatest early platformers on the system along with Ghouls and Ghosts and Strider. Still got the cart, box, and manual.
