I remember this so vividly because our teacher said we could either go to recess or watch his inauguration speech on the television she brought in. I chose to listen to the speech, and I am always glad I did so. I may not have been old enough to understand all the concepts or the importance on what he was saying he wanted to do, but his strong enunciation for peace over war and avoiding nuclear weapons made an impact. "For man holds in his mortal hands, the power to abolish all forms of human povery, and all forms of human life." "...Civility is not a sign of weakness, and sincerity is always subject to proof." What so many people forget is his next pronouncement of what government should always keep in mind: "Let us never negotiate out of fear, but let us never fear to negotiate." In September 1963, he put forward the revolutionary idea of a joint space mission with the USSR, predating the Apollo-Soyuz launch (July 1975) by almost 12 years. The war hawks who opposed it thought he was going "soft on communism" for even suggesting that, plus his strategic change from continuing the Cold War to one of peaceful co-existence with the USSR and Cuba that he signaled with his magnificent "Peace Speech from American University on June 10, 1963. Those changes he made in his foreign policy in tiring of the Cold War mentality and risk after the searing Oct. 1962 nuclear war close call in Cuba, plus his refusal to escalate to using regular army units and Marines to fight in the civil war between N. and S. Vietnam, led to the plan to remove him in a coup d'etat which sadly happened on Nov. 22, 1963. The world lost a man dedicated to peace and prosperity. He was the last president to refuse to fight in or start a war until Carter (1977-81). Decades later, it was Trump who also pursued peace in the Middle East, plus withdrawal of the high expanse and risk of the army lives from the 19-years occupation in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I remember also. I was young but it was a grand time in America. The country was strong. People we're doing well and all had jobs. I would never give up those memories. Our country is not the same.
People are not willing to stand and fight.
Hope we can bring back the honor ....and
The respect and the pride for a country that is free to decide. A country that honors God. I hope we can do it.
    God Bless America. KD
