    Lara actually DID have an excuse for being weaker in this game (and for being a bitch), though it was left on the cutting room floor. She was badly injured after her ordeal at the end of TR4, but supposedly, a priestess of an African tribe who rescued her supplies her with an amulet which will restore her abilities gradually over the course of her adventure. Unfortunately, it was nixed.

    I actually enjoyed this game a lot... and as a kid. I never noticed the flaws, except for some glitches and the controls sometimes. I loved the story and how difficult this game was. The fact of it having many animations show us how hard Core was working on this game. Who would care if it released on 2004 or 2005? If that meant a masterpiece, I sure wouldn't.
    TRAOD was going to be a gaming masterpiece, but thanks to Eidos... that never will never happen'.

    O actually loved AoD, I though the story was fascinating, the fact that you had a notebook full of information that stirred Lara's moves and was full of clues was nice and I even liked her dark personality. Idk maybe it's cause it was the first one I played.

    as a kid back far as i can remember i loved this game, i played and beat this game every day and knew every single glitch you could think of.
    this was my childhood game and by far my favorite PS2 game ever.
    i did yes notice all of the glitches, but that made me feel special, for knowing every single glitch in the game that i could use to my advantage.
    i realy dont understand how every one hates this game, and i dont hate them for saying its glitchy.
    but people go way too far to insult some games.

    I agree with some aspects being poor, but the whole "Lara is too cold & bitchy to everyone" and "Lara in other games crammed in the fact she was a woman and didn't care" points rubbed me the wrong way. Lara rarely ever said anything about being a woman in the games prior, and when male characters are vacant and callous, they're considered "badass."

    The main reason AoD was a terrible mess was because of the publisher (Eidos) and not the developer (Core)
    Eidos, rushed Core to push the game out to coincide with their financial year end, to boost their share price, even Core repeatedly told them it wan't finished.
    Large sections of the game were butchered, or parts removed altogether, leaving it feeling disjointed.
    Eurogamer have just published a (rather long) piece on the history of Tomb Raider and Lara Croft - Well worth a read for those interested in the franchise history.

    Angel of Darkness is a soft spot for us fans, not because of what it is, but because of what could have been. Tha'ts why you still see people trying to fix it to this day. There are comunity patches, restoration of cut content, Uraider (wich is actually a level editor based on it and it's concept ideas) and of course Freak Rider's Unreal engine 4 remake. If this game delivered on their ideas, this would have been revolutionary for an Early ps2 game. Look for today's games. They are using the dialogue system, the strenght system, the way Lara could be nicer, bitchier, or snarkier to the npcs. Those concepts started getting mainstream in the ps3 era of games. If they ditched Chronicles and focused only on this game like they intended, things would be completely different. But Eidos was greedy like all publishers were, and squished another psone release to not miss their anually release calendar. I read some interviews that the deves weren't even going home to meet the deadlines, they were camping in the studio. So, concerning the darker tone and Lara's personality, I guess it was a reflection of how the team was feeling at the time ;/

  • @Essu_
    @Essu_ 9 лет назад +3

    Okay, see. While I do agree that this game is a trainwreck of the highest caliber, and the strength mechanic is a disgusting addition... I can kinda make some sort of sense as to WHY she needs it in the game from a narrative standpoint..
    Like you said, she's athletic, and does exercise on her own, yes. BUT. This game takes place about 3-4 years after The Last Revelation. There's a novel that came out that details how she survived the cave-in at the end of Tomb Raider 4. She has yet to return home, and as such, has yet to do any real exercising to keep her strength up.
    So she can't really do everything strength-wise that she could in the last games, simply because she was still recovering from her near-death experience in TR4.

  • @tjc3644
    @tjc3644 8 лет назад +4

    For the strength thing, you kinda have to remember the story in between the last revelation and Angel of darkness. Its not explained in games but through Bios and stuff. Tl;Dr lara gave up on tombraiding and kinda grew depressed. Hence why her personality in this game is..Well really aggressive. And probably means she hasnt used the gym for years tbh.
    I found the controls to be clunky, only at the start of the game. Once i grew stronger and stuff it really stopped being so stiff and clunky.
    But yeah, the game was broken as hell, but you can blame Eidos for that. This game had potential and was emant to be a trilogy, I actually find it sad the game couldnt have more time to be finished. :/
    But overall cool review. I'm one of those fans who holds this game close to my heart and I think the plot (albeit confusing at first and with bits missed out by mistake because rushed) was one of its strong points along with the soundtrack.

      There is book about it. She gets saved by a tribe but has to learn everything from scretch because of the bad injuries. There were cutscenes planned to explain that but for some reason got deleted.

  • @oleirishdragon
    @oleirishdragon 10 лет назад +15

    I quite enjoyed AOD. I found it alot more enjoyable than TR2013 which is pure trash. Though the TR fans were starting to get sick of the core franchise since the 3rd game but when Legend came out they enjoyed it as much as the first 2 again the same with anniversary but for TR8 they criticized the franchise with the controls that were like AOD. I enjoyed tomb raiders 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, TRA, and 8 but TR2013 is pure trash.

    • @xxHanniee
      @xxHanniee 9 лет назад

      +oleirishdragon IT SUCKS SO BAD, RIGHT? It's like they took away Lara's personality ad tried to slap a different one on her altogether. Core Lara had her own timeline of events, and reasons she had personality traits and stuff. Crystal stuck to it mostly, apart from giving her severe mummy issues... when Lara hates both her parents in Core's original timeline.

    • @oleirishdragon
      @oleirishdragon 9 лет назад +1

      Nami Swan Well i know because both of crystal laras suck ass only the core design one is worth playing the first 6 games are better than the pure trashy crystal games. LAU and reboot eras sucked ass.

    • @NarlieQuinzel-Slytherin
      @NarlieQuinzel-Slytherin 9 лет назад

      I honestly enjoy 2013 game itself, but not the crying diaper baby Lara part. So... when I see that and Lara saying "I hate Tombs," that's when I know... that's not the real Lara that we loved. Even tho of course... Crystal had to say that's how Lara suppose to "struggle" being in the island while she was trained from before since it was from teen Lara from between TRLE and Chronicles.
      So... why Crystal had to remove Core Design Lara's history games? Just to make money for new TR fans that only loves their work, not Core Design. That's what pissed me off the most. And, well.... TRA's not the best remake of the first entire time, so... I would rather prepare Core's 1996 remake instead Crystal's TRA. Including when Crystal changed Lara Croft and TR series that fans use to loved while turns her into weak and feminine side Lara Croft including short cutscenes and story. But, that's just how every TR fans has from their different valid opinion is. At least it's good to know you know what TR games was before Crystal's TR games, it doesn't bothers me if you enjoy both of them. What only bothers me is modern fans .--.

    I do hate Tomb raider angel of darkness but love the old games but I do dislike it when people say they were tired of the same formula. Why fix something when its not broken? Pokemon and Sonic never changed their formula and with Sonic the games that did change to much those were considered horrible or mediocre.

    • @TrashorTreasure

      My biggest issue are the controls. If that had been fixed within any of the four sequels to the original, I definitely would've cut some slack on Tomb Raider III and Chronicles. Hell I definitely would've liked the original better if the controls were better, which is one of the reasons I love Anniversary so much.

    in my opinion the only thing bad about this game are the controls and the boss fights. these are certainly huge parts of what a game consists of but the remaining rest is pretty good compared to the older TR installments. the strenght system is just obsulete, not bad perse.

    Executive meddling pretty much destroyed this game. Eidos forced Core to make TR5 (which they didn't want to make), while putting the amateurs onto the AOD design team, then forcing it to be released before the bugs were out. It's a shame, really, because the audio and story are the best in the series, IMHO, despite the control and bugs making the game almost unplayable. Unfortunately, the story is a bit choppy due to some content being cut (like Karel's first appearance).

    I actually love this game (and I ain't ashamed)! No, but really, I will agree that the story doesn't make alot of sense -I heard that they had to cut levels out due to lack of time which might explain things- and that fucking ghost *is* the most annoying thing ever, but I actually like it! I like the vibe the game has and I like rude Lara, she seems so done with everyone! But you know, we all have different opinions, I personally can't stand the new TR games, they're like ridiculously easy and a tad stereotypical story wise. You're pretty funny about it though!

    The reson why the controls and the bugs are weird and the setting is bad, is because the game wasnt finished when it was released, Core was in such a hurry to release it, they didnt get to fix them. They should make updates from time to time on PC if you have Steam until its actually finished.

    She controls like a tank.
    She builds momentum like a lead balloon and then hits the breaks with her feet when you stop moving forward. Then you have to turn her in a new direction like the giant steel beast that she is to start the whole process again.

I loved Lara's design, the make-up and clothes just showed a more badass side of Lara. I also really loved Janice the friendly prostitute. Its a shame we have such a babyface lara now. I love Core Design TR games. Before when Eidos fired Core while they don't give them another chance for making AODII, which is why original AOD was unfinished. Fuck Eidos, no rights to fired Core Design! :/
    Until when Crystal changed Lara Croft's imagine and TR game series... those were the years, that the future games of TR gone worst, expect it would've be better from 2013 game itself if they never made Lara struggles in the island so much and not crying like a big diaper baby either while Lara should be a better survival instead. Let their last game Rise Of Tomb Raider be done already. I'm done with Crystal and their TR game selling crap, including their terrible remake TRA.

      Ayano Aishi Expect 2013 would be better if they don't make Lara as unbalanced crybaby... which is why I use to enjoy the gameplay, but not what they done to Lara since 2006 to this year... if Crystal and Sqaure followed Core's TRIV and V, it'll rather be jump balance non-crybaby Lara instead the one that they already published. What makes you think why some TR fans hates between of reboot and remakes?

      Sorry, but I don't make deals with a monkey. Teenage Lara from TRIV knew how to jump without a problem and she doesn't complains that her parents don't want her in their life since 96 to 2003. And secondly, Core TR games never drags Lara with mama/daddy issues, whines or cries like a real drama queen or let Lara's parents be dead because Lara's parents were alive from Core TR game version. Not Crystal changed Lara's parents that they're both dead and gone, mommy/daddy issues, changed hardcore Lara into as crybaby drama queen that plays as Lara Croft while fails terribly from her acting and Legend was too much human enemies. That's not how TR game series goes... sorry that you had to be just like rest of modern gamers. 2013 would be better if they never made Lara struggles in the island, cried a lot like a baby or girly talk rescue from saving Sam... "SAAAAAM!"

      hassan messaoudi We all had to agree that Core Lara Croft died along with Core's TR game series and will always be remembered. I miss our Ice Queen and Core Design still :/ ...

    Ugh, no matter what people say, I will still LOVE Tomb Raider III....I just don't understand how Tomb Raider II gets all the love and recognition and yet Tomb Raider III is pushed aside....

      I just don't understand why Tomb Raider one gets put in "best games on the Playstation 1" lists when its a steaming bowl of contrived, ancient, and dated gameplay.

    I also feel like this game is a bit too trashed around. I'm usually very sensitive to games in general and while I admit the glitches and controls can be an issue. I had no problems going far in the game even as a child. The halls of seasons in my opinion was the best part of the game. A bit annoying at times, but very enjoyable. I think the game is pretty enjoyable still. I wish we would've seen a part 2 of this game...

      Hall of Seasons was as far as I made it before jumping back to the first five when I was a younger. I enjoyed it for what it was, even though I couldn't follow the story and hated the limited (and ridiculously scarce) ammo idea. Hall of Seasons was by far the best part that I ever played through.

    Yes. Your legs will grow stronger if you make a lot of high jumps. But it doesn't go as fast as in the game, though.

    Puzzles are supposed to be difficult, so I don't see the issue with the Archaeological Dig. Looking at the story, Lara did lose her strength when fucking up in the pyramid. Make vines more 3d? Chronicles and Last Revelation had some very... unclear ladders. It just added to the difficulty and realism because not everything is gonna be obvious. But you know, it's just like Dark Souls for not babysitting players.

    The games after Angel of Darkness are just as bad as it is. The controls are less wonky and the levels more thought out, but the stories are awful and overall the games are easy. Tomb Raider was made for adults to play, such that a child would have an awful time trying to figure them out. After AoD, the levels are so linear that a 6 year old could breeze through them. At least AoD held on to some of the series' roots. Granted Core fell apart after it, but the Crystal Dynamics could've at least tried to stay within the theme of the series.
