The timing of the music plus raising of the head and then witnessing the cold, dispassionate eyes/face speak volumes for the character. For those of you wondering, this is a (very large) mill wheel. The Romans also used to work slaves like this, it was actually cheaper to use slaves to turn a wheel then to use oxen. Similar mills could be used to grind wheat, ore, etc.. though none this big. The one in this scene seems like a mill for ore given the climate.

      Huge doubt. One ox can pull close to one ton. You would need close to 20 men to do the same. To feed one ox is much cheaper than men. You could even feed it leftover or waste grain, humans can't eat that.q

    • @pandaman2234
      @pandaman2234 Год назад +29

      @@danmj1074 it was cheaper up front to buy 20 men in ancient Rome then it was to buy 1 Ox, at least depending on time time period.for decades following major campaigns and during periods of regular expansion, the slave markets were saturated with massive numbers of slaves lowering the value dramatically. This allowed the super rich to essentially bulk buy slaves. This actually created huge economic problems in Rome, as wealthy owners of large scale slave plantations forced low class farmers out of work, sending literally millions of unemployed people into Rome and other major Italian cities abd creating the "urban poor" for the first time in history. This lead to a host of social problems which were at the core of basically every civil conflict in the late republican and early imperial eras. The plantations ran themselves pretty much, however the rich owned large amounts of land that were neglected and and a lot of the crop went to feeding the slaves, so Italy which had previously been a large exporter of food now realyed on Sicily and Egypt to meet their grain needs, especially with the grain dool, which was basically a welfare system where the state would give grain to the urban poor for free to keep them from rioting. This took up something like 30% of the national budget on average.

      Nestor Makhno, the great Ukrainian anarchist revolutionary, was sentenced to life of hard labour in the meanest, toughest prison in Russian at the age of 17. Because he was never expected to be released, they welded the huge steel shackles shut around his legs. When the Soviets emptied the prisons seven years later as part of the general amnesty following the October Revolution, Makhno had to learn how to walk all over again because he had grown so accustomed to the terrible weight of his chains.
      Makhno became a ferocious and unstoppable warrior, like Conan. He led 50,000 untrained anarchists with makeshift weapons against an army of 600,000 German troops and drove them out of Ukraine. And he wasn't some general sitting behind a desk ordering men around, either. He would lead the charge on horseback at the head of his army, pistol in one hand and cavalry sabre in the other. Despite having an enormous bounty on his head, despite being severely wounded more than 20 times, despite throwing himself into the thickest part of the enemy forces time and time again, no one could stop him.
      In the end, it was the Soviets who betrayed him and broke the Makhnovshchina -- and they _never_ defeated Makhno. They invaded Ukraine with _millions_ of troops, and Makhno and his 50,000 men held out for five years against them. In the end, with all his men dead, Makhno fled for France, intending to return and raise another army. Stalin was so afraid of Makhno that he starved 10 million Ukrainians to death to prevent Makhno from doing so. Makhno died heartbroken, drunk in a Paris alley, at the age of 43. The greatest warrior of the 20th century died of sorrow.

There really is no way around it, you have to increase the intensity of your training, while decreasing the volume.

      @@John-Amata Not really, you will for the most part only use a couple of your muscles, mainly the legs, where as the rest of your body is just there for stabilisation and that for it self, isn't the most efficient way to build muscle, or every body builder would do nothing but pushing a wheel all the time. Most of your muscles need some kind of contraction and extraction with a logical periodisation and progression in weight. So even if you add more weight on to the wheel, you're not going to see big results. Even in your legs. You're just going to fuck up your joints.

  • @reticulan5
    @reticulan5 9 лет назад +109

    As stated by others here. The wheel was so perfectly balanced that they had to make resistance to make Arnie look like it was a effort to push. In Kingdom Of Heaven Ridley Scott ordered the seige towers be built with real solid hard wood. The hundreds of extras strained to push them up against the castle walls. When asked why they were constructed for real. Ridley pointed out. It would have been like that in the day. Also the dozens of extras pushing the seige towers were straining every muscle. There was no acting involved. You also don't have to keep directing the extras to show a heavy load. How many times have a seen a modern sitcom or TV series, where an actor is carrying his/her luggage. You can tell the suit cases are empty. Just by the ease and the shoulders position and posture of the body of walking and carry weight.
    I worked on a small independent film (2 Of A Kind) one scene a crook took out a body from a trunk. It was shot beneath the car. They did it with the actor pretending to open the trunk and lift the body out to where it was to be dumped. The framing was a little above the ankles down to the road level. I insisted he actually carry someone. I was laughed at as they all said no one will tell. We then did a take and saw the strain on the running shoes and feet and the balancing needed to counter weight. Then the shuffle and how the actor needed to throw the actress a little higher to get a better grip around her body. They saw the 2 takes, then commented oh yeah the second take looks like he is carrying someone.
    After a few weeks It was brought up in conversation on another film shoot. One of the crew said they were shooting office people (in the story) at a gym. for insurance purposes they had most with fake dumbell weights (discs) the 2 gym instructors who were extras had about 30kg/65 pound weights. The editor on that noticed the swaying on the 2 with real weights, like a pendulum.

      Best movie prop story I ever heard was from a SEAL buddy of mine while we were doing contractor work. He said that one of the bad ass instructors came out for an endurance run wearing scuba gear. He told me he had a feeling something wasn't right after the instructor warned what would happen if he beat anyone on this run. He said he ran as fast as he could and finished ahead of most of the class that ran next to the instructor laughing and joking all the way to the halfway point. At the halfway point this instructor took off at his regular speed and they all found out the hard way it was just a movie prop from The Posidean Adventure. They have a saying, "Don't let me lead you into a false sense of security" and they mean it.

    One aspect that seems to elude most people is that Conan is tied to the Wheel of Pain with other children and, little by little, they all vanish (probably death took them) 'till only an adult Conan remains, showing that he is inherently stronger than all the others. It may also hint to the unseen fire that burns within: his thirst for revenge. To kill those who murdered his parents. A fire so strong that fuels his soul and body in an apparent perfect mix, making him possibly the strongest man who has ever lived, both in body and mind.

    This scene is fucking awesome in every way. Conan as a kid pushing the wheel, the multiple shots of everyone else working their ass off pushing it as well, the day and night flipping, the seasons changing, Conan gtowing slightly older, the wheel's creaking and screeching, and the music tops it off

    Can you imagine getting jumped by some Hyborians on the highroads and you hear one of them say: "Put his ass in the wheel of pain."

    What Conan repeated in his head every day, "I will push this wheel until it breaks or it breaks me. I will not break. I will push another day."

    Arnold is the embodiment of perfection which makes his 'altercation' with the family maid all the more staggering.

      I felt like this too. But now I look at it differently. The maid was performing wifely duties in his home (keeping house is considered by many to be a wifely duty deeply appreciated by husbands) what was his wife doing? She was doing something more important to her than keeping house.
      I used to babysit for a few different families in my teens and early twenties. I've had husbands tell me they "love me" when they walk into a clean house and I report the kids are fed, bathed, and in bed asleep. I've had husbands give excessive and disproportionate amounts of praise when seeing a prepared meal.
      I think if Miss Kennedy had not cooperated in establishing a situation where there was another woman in her home doing her duties, the affair wouldn't have happened. I think Arnold turned down many many opportunities to cheat with other more stunningly beautiful women. I believe that 100%. Why was this woman different. I think most men are simply in that they want their wives and they want appreciation for the home they provide. I think this maid happily going around taking care of the home ARNOLD worked hard to create was just too much for him. She got him in the heart. God bless him and his family and all his children.

      @@elainemiller8296Jesus f*cking Christ! Couldn't you be MORE male chauvinist than this? Arnold cheated Maria a thousand times - Brigitte Nielsen and Rae Dawn Chong included. It was never a secret for no one. You are living in the past, in the 40s and 50s , when housewife was the perfect role for a woman.

    i think of this movie more as one of robert e howard stories, but not necessarily about Conan. the Howard conan got his superior fighting and survival skills by being born a barbarian and living outside of civilization, not from being a slave. The fact that Conan learns his skills and mental fortitude from being a slave directly contradicts not only the character of Conan, but why he always survives according to Howard (because he is a barbarian, he wasn't taught these things, he was born to them).
    There are plenty of howard stories, though, with revenge plots, slaves getting their freedom, etc. The aspects of this movie such as the dialogue, the violence, the music and imagery, are all very much vintage Howard, painted in broad strokes with great energy. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this movie and the vision that milius brought. He created a Robert e Howard story come to life!

    Interesting that he's locked into the wheel by a red-headed boy, then later bought by a red-headed man. Makes ya wonder if they're the same person.
