- On the 15th May 2021, Melbourne's heritage Tait electric multiple units made their return on the main line for the first time in 17 years under their own power. Restored and operated by Steamrail Victoria, carriages 381M, 208T, 341T, 230D & 317M operate five return test trips along the Werribee line; firstly between Newport and Laverton, then onto Werribee.
Nicknamed the Red Rattlers; the Tait's were built between 1910 - 1952, and were among Melbourne's first electric multiple units when electrification of the metropolitan rail network began in 1919.
Withdrawn at the end of 1984, several carriages were preserved as operational heritage trains, and ran special heritage trains around Melbourne until January 2004, when safety and accreditation issues saw the trains banned from operating on the metropolitan rail network.
Steamrail then spent the next several years restoring the Tait's to operational condition and fixing various issues. The Tait's originally returned to the mainline in 2016 as locomotive hauled carriages, but in 2019 it was announced that Steamrail had received funding to restore the Tait's to operational condition. After some tests in the Newport Workshops, the end result was the return to the main line under their own power.
The return of the Tait's is a testament to the great work of Steamrail Victoria and their volunteers. It's fantastic to see a piece of transport history restored so beautifully and out on the main line once again.

I feel like I’m a kid again in the early 70s watching these old rattlers. No stupid electric doors on those trains. The doors were always open in the Summer months with no problems. Miss these old trains.
I was a guard on the sparks from 1980 to 85, very nice to see the Tait in action, love the sound of the traction motors.
Such a great effort by all involved to get them going, shame that they didn't get their accreditation but I'm sure steamrail an elecrail will keep working to get them going
They have now...and their first proper passenger run will be March 8th with trip to Essendon then Belgrave. I will be on it 🥳🤪
Nice video. Good to see the old red Rattlers back running and welldone to the team at Steam Rail Victoria for all their hard work in getting it running again. the steam clip was nice to see too.
Bloody superb !!
Many memories in these carriages from long ago on the Frankston and Sandringham lines and the Showground line at show time.
The sound of the horns, the motor whine as it moved away from stationary and the clinking of the hand stirrups are unique.
I still recall the dozens of Tait carriages placed at the Jolimont yard during off peak times and the weekends in the 60s and 70s, near to the old power station.
And the thrill of sitting beside an open door in mid summer time and watching the tracks and scenery pass by.
Back then many people during morning rush hour would step off the carriage before it came to a stop at the station platform. No concern about safety as it was then generally accepted.
And the cigarette smokers by the dozens, used butts across the floor and the men both seated and standing carefully folding the Age and Herald newspaper (3 afternoon editions) so as not to bump those sitting beside them.
Memories of forty plus years ago when Melbourne had character, style and a prosperous future believed as guaranteed.
When the Taits were removed that marvellous spirit of Melbourne of seventy years disappeared with them.
Thanks. 🦘

amazing seeing them in HD
awesome
HI MATES!! Do you mind if I ask you something?? The carriage were made in England?? Gauge 1600 mm?? What kind of electrification, overhead 1500v, 25000v or any other?? All the best for you and regards from BA, Argentina!!
I’d like to know what modern day adaptations were made to achieve accreditation.
Would be nice to see a video of the interior .
Why does the middle carriage not have white but the rest do?
Amazing Video Alex, Soon it's next stop would definitely be Belgrave, but who knows when that's happening.
How do u know that
Proof
@@trctrainspotting2945 there’s no proof, like I said: “Who knows when that’s happening”
@@TCJ_YT ok
I Can confirm that the train indeed went to Belgrave
They sound incredibly similar to the Standard/Tulloch/Sputnik cars for use in NSW.
The cars you mention are also mechanically much the same as the U sets. I have heared the weak field was dissconnected in the Reds?
Taits sound like Adelaide's H type tram, or more the point, these trams were quite train like & were once run 3 coupled.
Some thing that really annoys me was a viewer is that all the gunzals always film at the same place and get the exact same video
I think the Taits rarely went to Packenham either. They might have when the servece was extended in 1975?
That said. I'm sure the Taits could run at say 90 km/h or close to it.
@The transport man I don't know if the gearing would allow that, (generally). But considering that Taits feel about poweful as modern DMU at med speed or starting., it's quite possible. Your source please. Incidently I thought the Tait got away from stops, faster the Harris trains, but that could be the gearing.i.e If Taits can do 110, it was not their intention to run them like that, in use they would be mostly below 80.
The captions come and go again FAR too fast!! great video though!
This tait train sounds like the old comeng models or sets just by hearing its’ horn.
Same horn type.
Both fitted with R.V.B 3 chime horns.
Will we be able to ride them?
Sounds like 381M needs the wheel lathe.
bruh moment ~~~ Are you a time traveller

VR didn’t have tilt trains it had Tait trains.
