Today (June 27, 2021) you're going to see this tutorial video for Mice And Mystics go live, but it was actually first created in 2012. However, it was posted on the Plaid Hat Games RUclips channel at that time, and although I also had it uploaded here, I never made my version public - and then I forgot about it! However, I rediscovered it today and thought I should make it public here as well, to go along with all the game plays that ARE located on this channel - so if you see that older video appearing and you're wondering why - that's why! Also: White Polo throwback!
Rodney Smith and the Fountain of Youth. What do we learn when we watch this video, apart from the rules to this amazing game? That Rodney has always been a natural talent when it came to explaining games. He is really the best in the industry. I sometimes watch his videos even if I have zero interest in the game, just to see him explaining stuff 😀 Keep up the great work! Yours, Thomas
@@WatchItPlayedI second the comment above. Rodney is the best. When I was first getting back into hobby games after playing some years ago, I bought Mice and Mystics to play with my kids. I opened it up and tried to learn how to play from the rule book. All their expectant faces waiting to play the game, plus me being completely lost about terms like initiative track resulted in me being brought to literal tears (I was pregnant at the time…so there is that) I packed it up and regretted buying and trying a game clearly beyond what I was up to. I almost gave up on trying anything beyond Sushi Go ever again. Then I found this video by Rodney explaining it in a completely friendly and simple way and I tried playing again (by myself this time) and then with the kids and we have had fun playing a wide range of games ever since, because I always check is Rodney has a “how to play” video before buying the game….and then I watch it a few times. Its thanks to you Rodney that my family of 7 is solid gamers now, right on down to the 2 hr old who loves to pull games off the shelf and “play” them with me. Can’t say thank you enough. 😊
@@searose6192 Truly such a kind and generous comment. Thank you so much. It is such a pleasure to do this kind of work, knowing it has had a positive impact on your gaming experiences.
I bought this game because of your review nearly a decade ago! I still haven't finished the campaign because sometime between then and now my daughter became a teenager and playing games with dad became not as "cool" as it once was. Now that she's almost off to college she's come around, so there's still hope. I need to know how this thing ends!
This is a good opportunity to tell you Rodney, that this video is what brought me into the hobby. I had played Settlers of Catan a lot and I decided I should look into more modern board games. I went to BGG and saw Mice and Mystics on the hotness list (it had just been released), then I found your how to play and gameplay videos which helped me decide that the game was right for me, and learn to play it. Thank you so much for helping me dive in to board games with this video and everything you have done since.
Seeing this posted today brought back some great memories. I fondly recall first watching this video two years ago with my then seven-year-old son after picking up this game at a used game sale. We felt well armed to play through the campaign after watching, and I have been singing Rodney’s praises as a board game teacher ever since. Mice and Mystics was our first of many modern board games and this video helped open that world to us. It is amazing to think how far you (and this channel) have come since you first filmed this; thanks for being such an outstanding member of our hobby!
Great video production on how to play Mice & Mystics. Rodney Smith is by far the best teacher when it comes to teaching and I just love his presentation. Consistent, clear and articulate in how he captures the viewer's attention when making his presentation. Keep up the great work, Rodney Smith. Your efforts are highly valued and appreciated.
This game is one of my favorite games of all time, I discovered it thanks to this video. Played it in different groups, extensions as well and I have a lots of wonderful memories, Thank you Rodney Ps = and I'm ready to set it up again whenever
This is awesome. I used your video to help my coworkers and I gets ready to play this, and watched it many times to be sure I could answer as many questions as I could. Sadly shortly after game 1, Covid happened so I imagine we'll need to re-start the game and refresh our memories on the rules
Oh my, I loved this episode!! I've actually got this game right after your playthrough and I still have it XD. I was so confused when it said this video was posted a few hours ago. haha Good old days
This was the first game my wife and I played together. Wil W drew us into it with his family playthrough, and your video helped us through our own first adventure... the first of many. Thank you for being a part of our board game journey from the beginning, you're the best!
Read the instructions, played the game, saw the video, and found 5 things i missed myself in the manual. E.g. it is much easier to get out of the water with help of friends. :-D thanks!
This video series is what dragged me into the rainbow coloured happy abyss that is modern board gaming. After it being suggested to me by a FLGS, I went ahead and checked it out. Soon after a lot of games that I bought were games featured on Watch It Played. Almost 10 years and 200+ games later I don’t buy as many games, but still enjoy your content. Thanks!
Like everybody else, my husband said "Redwall" when he saw this. It looks like a good one to add to a Christmas list. :) 'Cause, you know, it's never too early....
This video of Mice and Mystics (M & M) just shows how much you have progressed on explaining on how to play a game. Comparing how you explain a game like M & M to how you explain games today there is a massive improvement (just as I hoped there would be). I would be a good idea if 3 or 4 times a year you drop on us an ancient how to play video from years past just to remind us how much you and the channel have improved. And at the end I missed you saying "Thanks for Watching." Keep up the good work.
I have so enjoyed the playthroughs with your son. It's truly sacred to see you two enjoy each other's company so much!!! You must be so proud of him. It's hard for me to believe that he's not little anymore, since I didn't realize when I first started watching these how old they were!
@@WatchItPlayed That is very awesome. :) We have been trying to have a child and gaming has been helping distract from the long times of waiting and the disappointments. I hope one day we will have a child to play games with us, too!
I'm loving that you're doing older games, hers to hoping for a few I'd like to see 😅❤️👏 Edit: Just realized the fact that this might be an old recording :P oh well 😁
Tried to play this with my son last night, read the rules in full a week or so ago and reviewed them today, but they weren't really clear enough (some things were also worded poorly) and so we ended up being wiped out by board 3 of the first campaign (this is also my fault for forgetting the rescue action and forgetting we had abilities). Now I understand how to play out combat better we should stand a much better chance of surviving, so, many thanks!
Hey! I love your videos, great job really. This video and the one for Stuffed Fables were very useful to us. I was wondering if you are planning to cover their other game Familiar Tales as well :)
Seems Target has the best price. Literally four cents less than Miniature Market. And there's also an expansion. Nice to see something that is still attainable. Bet you those minis would look real good painted. Would be a cool gift for my daughter who also likes Mouse Guard the rpg. That one's pretty cool.
I’m a big fan of this game, but I always found the rule book’s explanations and organization lackluster. Some rules feel hidden in unrelated sections, etc. It took a while to grok the rules, but once I did I enjoyed the, An in-depth primer like this in invaluable to getting up to speed more quickly!
Hello. Wow, a Rodney Throwback. It had me confused for a moment with the dates but now I see why. I am just diving into this game and had a quick question. You say, and so do the rules, that anytime mice explore a tile for the first time, you draw an encounter card. Does this mean that at the start of any of the chapters, after initial set up, and drawing the initiative order, you draw an encounter card, thereby adding even more minions to the start tile before any actions are taken? Thanks
@@stacie_everdell It's been a little while since I shot this, and I don't have a copy anymore, but I believe this is specially saying you draw an encounter card after taking an Explore action. It's not referring to the start of a scenario.
This popped up in my notifications this morning and left me totally confused... "Why would Rodney make a video on Mice and Mystics now? Is there a new expansion or second edition coming that I missed?" Nope, just a blast from the past.
"Lets talk about mouse movement" - oh that's easy, it's how you get the cursor onto the icon you want to click... wait this is a boardgame? Ohhh right other kind of mouse...
As far as I know the rules don't officially cover this, but since a largre creature moving into a space with a small creature would "overfill" the space, I'd say it's not mean to be allowed.
So if you made a drinking game out of every time you cringed at minor video issues you've changed since then how drunk would you have gotten on your rewatch of this? Because I know if I did the same for my own stuff it would result in my death.
Well, I suppose everything is a part of progress and development, so I just see this as being a product of what I was capable of at the time, and it helped me develop new abilities, and growth for the future.
