The Taurian front of the RUW was commanded by the SLDF rather than the fedsuns, so if one's looking for a reason to be disapproving of the feddies the better thing to focus on there is how the RUW was originally caused by the fedsuns insisting on claiming partial ownership of a world basically right in Taurian space on the basis that it was discovered by a multinational corporation, having it demilitarized between them and the taurians by getting the Terrans to threaten war if the Taurians didn't agree, and then seemingly keeping secret naval forces in the system ready to strike if the taurians ever dared to move into the system (given the technology of the era, it would have been literally impossible for the Fedsuns to respond in the Malagrotta Affair otherwise), before promptly destroying a nonresisting taurian fleet in the system and burying all (possibly fabricated, possibly not) evidence that the Taurians never intended to be there in the first place and were just trying to ask for help fixing their ships so they could leave, so they could get the Terrans to help them invade the Taurians as had seemingly been the plan to begin with - thus causing the Reunification War.
That's on top of the SLDF having Feddie troops incorporated into them from the start to begin as well as FedSun auxiliaries on the Taurian front. The backup singers of a warcrime opera are just as complicit really.
It's a complicated thing because on the other front, "former" FedSun forces under Elias Pitcairn spent years making Amos Furlough's Terran units look like fools while trying to protect the Outworlds Alliance from the RUW campaign, though ultimately the Terrans prevailed. Furlough was then transferred to commanding the faltering war with the Taurians after a Taurian sniper killed the SLDF commander with a radioactive bullet. The AFFS was "requested" to provide further help, and Alexander Davion sent it... under the command of Elias Pitcairn. Furlough was not a happy man, but Ian Cameron smacked him in the head and made him play nice. The Taurians were also plenty nuke-happy on their own side, to the extent the Pleiades would wage decades of guerrilla warfare against them centuries later instead of welcoming them as liberators as the Taurians had expected.

There were no cut and dry good guys in the Reunification War. That being said, the Federated Suns eagerly committed a massive portion of its military to the campaign, and resorted to truly horrific tactics in order to rapidly suppress Taurean worlds and move on to grab more territory. Also, the bit about former worlds resisting liberation is accurate... But at least 50% due to the extensive and pervasive propaganda they had been bombarded with for centuries at that point. It's kinda insane to expect anyone to welcome an invading foreign army as liberators simply because their great-great-great grandfather was a toddler at the time that invading foreign power lost the place originally. The Taurians increasingly jumped the shark from 3020-3080 and went from respectable independence and isolationism to flat-out paranoid schizophrenia and nationalistic delusions that ended turning them into exactly the kind of bloody would-be conquerors they despised the Inner Sphere as. And in the end, it got them to start a war with Davion that ended up doing ruinous damage to their nation, for no good reason.
The Fed Suns Church of The Autocannon developed The Rotary Autocannon. And if your determined enough you can mount 2 RAC 5, 4 LMG, 3 ER ML and AMS on a Jagermech DD.
Of the great houses, I like the Suns best, and as a Merc, am happiest working for them. That said, I have noticed that the older I get, the more Taurian I feel. Maybe that's why my current mech painting project is Concordat units?
I run a sizable force of Fed Suns as the Albion Training Cadres and the Kathil Uhlans, but my next faction (aside from the various small project of a couple lances of every faction for my Time of War game) is gonna be Dumassas Legionnaires for the Taurians, cause the Taurians are absolute gigachads.
Autocannons are good yes. However...have you heard of our lord and ear-remover the Gauss Rifle? (Glass shatteringly loud noise of a hypersonic projectile passing by)
There was one rule I saw for Autocannons, where loading with special high-explosive rounds allowed an autocannon to serve as basic artillery. The basic rules for this were: 1) damage is 1/5 normal, FRD (so the AC/2 has no effect, and the AC/20 only does 4 pts to one hex) 2) there is no minimum range (technically there still is but it doesn't come into play at artillery ranges) 3) the autocannon's short range is now the range in mapsheets (so the AC/20's short range of 3 hexes now becomes 3 mapsheets) Makes all those little AC/5-armed vehicles into nasty aggravating units by changing out 1 ton of ammo. An Infantry platoon equipped with an AC/5 can provide support up to 6 mapsheets away.
An in-depth Federated Suns video and no mention of Kentares IV..... I have a perpetual campaign going on since 1989. My players decided amongst themselves to be Federated Suns players. Since then, House Liao has been eradicated. House Kurita decided nuking their own planets was better than losing to House Davian. House Steiner is mired in political intrigue and has lost about a 1/3 of their planets. The Free Worlds League is neck deep in factional warfare and some factions have succeeded. The Taurians have been reduced to one world and are tightly controlled to ensure they don't cause any more war crimes. In fact the major players in the periphery are Pirates which have decimated the small unimportant powers that make up the periphery. The Clans were stopped stone cold in the deep periphery and are in the process of having their home star cluster reconnoitered for future containment and cauterization.
One thing that balances the fed suns is that it is sandwiched between putting planets to a sword kurita and i would gas a planet just to have it liao. Having two hyper aggressive, insanely fanatical militaries basically forces davion to be great or anything less then they will be conquered. You dont have that issue with the houses, except maybe liao and well. Stiener had kurita but with marik being decentralized they could literally afford to be stupid. Kurita doesn't respect the steiner military overall and kinda have this love/hate boner for davion because the relationship of kurita and davion is actually closer, to me atleast, takeda and uesegi in some of the Japanese sengoku era. They love fighting davion because it is challenge.
Which Battletech characters do you think mirror Kenshin and Shingen the closest? I always thought Theodore to be pretty close to Shingen but I could never find anyone close to Kenshin.
@@leetman102 overall house Davion and kurita has that kind of rivalry in general, hanse Davion and Takashi kurita emblonizes that constant rivalry but Victor and Theodore got that fellowship going. For example one time, if remembered correctly, that Takeda was getting blockaded and could not access salt to provide his troops so uesegi decided to charge in and bring salt and other supplies saying that war should be won by men and swords, not fish and salt. But the bottom line point I'm trying to make is that kurita focuses on Davion because they consider them their greatest rival.
The reason they are such determined rivals is because the two are more alike than they are different. Superficially, they appear to be opposites, but more than any other great house they share the same goals, use quite a few of the same methods, face the same issues, the only real differences are the internal logistics of state and the coat of paint they wear. Both of them are neofeudalistic autocracies run by dictators with absolute power.
Because they right about everything except dealing with the Clans because the Clans are too busy fighting with the inner sphere's great houses and by the time they reach them they probably already have their guns and ships pointing at that very direction they're coming from.

The Federated Suns are especially interesting to me because of their particular military organization. Namely, they're really close to 8-9th Century Roman structure. The Marches have combined military-civilian government and March Militia units that are locally raised and maintained, used primarily for local military actions. The Guards have centrally located units (Crucis March or even New Avalon specifically) with top-tier kit and training and function primarily as the mobile reserve and offensive army of the AFFS, and answer directly to the First Prince (or his champion). This is strikingly similar to the Themes with their Strategoi and the Tagmata centered on Constantinople. Even their enemies are analogous, with the Combine being the similar-but-not-quite-the-same top-tier military power with antithetical ideology akin to Persia or the Arab Muslims, and the CapCon being akin to the Slavs, Bulgars, and other northern neighbors who were impossible to squash permanently and who often won major battles (especially through ambush) but who ultimately couldn't defeat the Roman Empire and were periodically smashed badly enough to be pacified for generations. Being a big fan of the medieval Romans, the FedSuns look extra nifty. March, by the way, is a historical term for a military border holding. It literally means "borderland" and is traditionally a heavily militarized holding specifically intended as a front line and staging area against a regional enemy. Use of the term fits the FedSuns particularly well considering their Anglo-French heritage, given that Charlemagne famously established roughly a dozen marches throughout his holdings. The way they function may be closer to the Roman Themes, but the basic purpose fits the label well.
Minor addendum for you - medieval European, not Roman. The Roman Empire had fallen long before that, around the 5th century, when the concept of the "March" was Charlemagne, over 4 centuries later. Other than that, pretty much spot on :)
@MrGrimsmith The marches were Charlemagne, as I said, but the theme/tagma system was definitively Roman (which empire didn't end until 1453) and lasted from about the mid or late 600s to around the mid 1000s.

Nice take on things, I appreciate that you're mostly looking at it from the US perspective but the Fed Suns, IIRC, were based on medieval England and France. The border marches being more or less separate states, feudalism and nepotism, politicking and assassination from those in power but some limits. Basically "Don't rock the boat, you're too powerful" and someone gets stomped on. They do use *some* assault mechs though, most commonly the Victor as it can keep up with the heavies, primarily as command mechs. I think I read somewhere the Banshee as well but that may be Federated Commonwealth? Fast, brawly assaults aren't unheard of though.
Ah. My fave high horse faction pretending to defend democracy while also playing politics to the finest. That said they are my favorite faction. They were a writers pet for awhile and then it changed to pure hate. A nation which supposedly has great martial prowess has had its capital be destructed three times in a century. Get it together guys.
They’re a power that tries to deal with issues with tact (akin to escorting a rowdy patron off a casino floor as quietly as possible) and prioritizes things like arts and health care. Not perfect, but also more to em than “heehoo space cocaine and catgirls”

"FedSuns love their autocannons" That really kicked into high gear with the FedCom civil war. In the succ wars they had equal amounts of variants that replace autocannons with lasers (Blackjack 1DB, Rifleman 4D whatever the one with PPCs is, Suburbanmech) as they have lasers for autocannons (Thunderbolt 4D the one with an AC/20, Rifleman whatever with 2 AC/20s)
As a merc, House Davion drew me to them cause of the exceptional pay and salvage in their contracts. Fastest way to make cash and get mechs is to go kick the teeth outta the Caps for some juicy incentives the Davions hand out.
In the real world the federated suns economy probably wouldn't be to bad. Most of the time it actually makes sense to spread business out because the natural allocation of resources and people is spread out and because once you've hit a certain size of factory you don't really get much out of being bigger it just gets more chaotic to manage.
It's interesting how RUclipsrs have fallen in line with the notion of referring to The Capellans as North Korea when in the 1980s it was pretty obviously China + Russia.
Because as times change the references of 30-40 years ago and the current state of the world don't match. The russia and china of the time battletech was written, or i guess fleshed out are vastly different than what they are today. RUclipsrs use North Korea in space as analogue since it instantly communicates what they are more accurately to the average viewer without needing to explain that it's a mix of the soviet union and pre-(mass scale famine/industrialisation/modernisation) china. In my opinion, battletech is so old that a lot of the real life source material used as inspiration either doesn't exist anymore, or is so vastly different that real life comparisons just dont work. So, yes. North Korea in space.

Back when I first got into Battletech, I got the boxed set and all it talked about was the Houses. Davion/FedSuns was the one I liked the most. My primary factions to love are Comstar and Free Rasalhague Republic. But the more I learn about the other Houses, the Clans, and Periphery states... The more I like the FedSuns and House Davion.
The whole autocannon love thing i find weird, cause id expect all their refits/personal upgrades to older mechs to be "just shove more autocannons into it" but more often than not, its "hmm yes, pull those heat sinks and shove in more large laser/ER lasers". Its very strange, but very funny.

Honestly, the Lyran commonwealth sounds like a more realistic (read: Significantly worse) version of the same goals the federated suns have. Like, if you try to get to the federated suns, you end up as the Lyrans. Which blows.
In terms of general living standards, the LC is overall the better choice, though. The thing with the FedSuns is that it's a bunch of big, utopian jewel worlds, while most of its vast territories and the populations living there are actually pretty damn poor and underdeveloped. The overall FedSuns economy is closer to Liao and Kurita than it is to those of the Lyrans or FWL, and access to modern healthcare or good education is outright a luxury for most FedSun citizens, if not just a dream.
Well, marches... exacted from game Europa universalis, a march is a step away from a vassal, it still has to come and help you in your wars, offensive or defensive makes no difference, and they still don't have any saying in their demanded contribution, but they do not pay you in levy and tax as heavily as a vassal anymore. They are not sovereign states and do not have their own foreign policy but you cannot annexe them anymore as you could potentially do to your vassals. Or something along those lines...
And the kids one of them being the most backstabbing piece of shit serving the house diner name and whose kid would end up being the worst leader of Clan wolf I'm glad the Free World League kicked his ass or at least push them back for now.
On a surface level, even I understood at 12 years old or so that the FedSuns had to have a quality enough military to at least fend off a perpetual two front war between the Draconis Combine and the Capellan Confederation - or at least the threat of one, while also not collapsing to a surpise third front in the form of the Lyran Alliance.
Now I may not be a fan of the Combine, but it was nice seeing them wipe the smugness off the face of Davion when they went on their field trip to Avalon
41:00 Correction, it was mostly forces from the Terran Hegemony/Star League proper that were committing most of the war crimes. The Fed Suns were almost a non-factor after the Taurians opened the war by more or less annihilating the Davions' navy. Of course, tell that to your average Taurian and they'll tell you it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. They were part of the same invading army as everyone else, they're just as guilty for the war crimes inflicted on them as Amos "Baby Killer" Forlough was.
Davion is the 'good guy' simply by being between the Capellans and the Daconis Combine. You get the scrappy freedom faction, not an infinite war machine like the Lyrans, that loves big guns and fights the space communists on both sides.
In a setting where warfare is fought by giant mechs and nuclear weapons are throw at each other on a whim everyone in that universe will have a lot of innocent blood on their hands, but the sheer gal that the Federated Suns believe that they are the most Noble and Pure faction in the setting is unbelievably egotistical on their parts considering how many warfare of conquest they fought throughout the years. In Battletech every major house are like those in Game of Thrones cutthroat, treacherous, lying, deceptive and brutal when it comes to politics, at least the the rest of the inner sphere doesn’t hides it ugly nature compared to the Suns.
The fedsuns dont mass execute civilians every single chance they get so, no, this is just kneejerk reaction to hypocrisy on your part. They're still absolutely better than cappies and dracos.

I have a hard time explaining Fed Suns without comparing it to 1980s USA (although 2020s USA is more like Free Worlds League, at each others throats all the time).
Fed suns military biggest problem with there mechs atleast is desire to stay technically advance. They will ruin mechs and vehicles with to much gear or tech. There is reason they failed to create the warhammer.
I am realizing that I do favour a lot of the military stuff of the FedSuns. Their mechs are straight up badass and reliable. Which is ironic as I made a merc company with similar favouritism of trooper mechs. On the opposite side of the Sphere.
The Federated Suns are a great hpuse to play if you don't want to think too hard about the hypocrisy and brutality. Unlike their arch nemesis, and very misunderstood, and far more glorious, and overall cooler neighbors. With the other houses you have to face the very real fact that your playing a, very bad person .

Calling the Fed Suns army basic feels like an unearned insult. If an army can consistently bring out and demonstrate fundamental competency across all branches of the military, then that is force cabable of standing their ground. They won't get lost, chacing gimmicks and becoming one trick pony. A generalist is always going to have something that will be decent for the job at hand, and often times thats enough. The only thing they really suck at is logistics, which is a huge weakness, though.
AH the feds, effective till the dragon got his shit together. Now after they got there shit kicked in and basically lost the Naive and there top scientists they have to struggle.

After reading through the Warriors Trilogy, it’s nice to see the Fedsuns truly struggle and suffer from consequences. The Warriors Trilogy just made me tired of Hanse getting a ton of wins without much consequences, while the Capellans were the ones who actually had to struggle to stay alive

They never used WMDs offensively prior to the WoB jihad, which was when the BT devs decided the Taurians needed dragging through the mud as they were too nice a faction. It's kinda insane to expect anyone to welcome an invading foreign army as liberators simply because their great-great-great grandfather was a toddler at the time that invading foreign power lost the place originally.
The Taurians increasingly jumped the shark from 3020-3080 and went from respectable independence and isolationism to flat-out paranoid schizophrenia and nationalistic delusions that ended turning them into exactly the kind of bloody would-be conquerors they despised the Inner Sphere as. And in the end, it got them to start a war with Davion that ended up doing ruinous damage to their nation, for no good reason.
The Fed Suns Church of The Autocannon developed The Rotary Autocannon. And if your determined enough you can mount 2 RAC 5, 4 LMG, 3 ER ML and AMS on a Jagermech DD.
Yes that AMS is very important to protect the powderkeg, even if its own ammo is also explosive...

Of the great houses, I like the Suns best, and as a Merc, am happiest working for them. That said, I have noticed that the older I get, the more Taurian I feel. Maybe that's why my current mech painting project is Concordat units?
I run a sizable force of Fed Suns as the Albion Training Cadres and the Kathil Uhlans, but my next faction (aside from the various small project of a couple lances of every faction for my Time of War game) is gonna be Dumassas Legionnaires for the Taurians, cause the Taurians are absolute gigachads.

Autocannons are good yes. However...have you heard of our lord and ear-remover the Gauss Rifle?

There was one rule I saw for Autocannons, where loading with special high-explosive rounds allowed an autocannon to serve as basic artillery.
The basic rules for this were:
1) damage is 1/5 normal, FRD (so the AC/2 has no effect, and the AC/20 only does 4 pts to one hex)
2) there is no minimum range (technically there still is but it doesn't come into play at artillery ranges)
3) the autocannon's short range is now the range in mapsheets (so the AC/20's short range of 3 hexes now becomes 3 mapsheets)
Makes all those little AC/5-armed vehicles into nasty aggravating units by changing out 1 ton of ammo. An Infantry platoon equipped with an AC/5 can provide support up to 6 mapsheets away.
A working gauss rifle (with ample ammo) would’ve DEFINITELY been seen as messianic a few hundred years after the sldf exodus.
An in-depth Federated Suns video and no mention of Kentares IV..... I have a perpetual campaign going on since 1989. My players decided amongst themselves to be Federated Suns players. Since then, House Liao has been eradicated. House Kurita decided nuking their own planets was better than losing to House Davian. House Steiner is mired in political intrigue and has lost about a 1/3 of their planets. The Free Worlds League is neck deep in factional warfare and some factions have succeeded. The Taurians have been reduced to one world and are tightly controlled to ensure they don't cause any more war crimes. In fact the major players in the periphery are Pirates which have decimated the small unimportant powers that make up the periphery. The Clans were stopped stone cold in the deep periphery and are in the process of having their home star cluster reconnoitered for future containment and cauterization.
So whats going on there now?
One thing that balances the fed suns is that it is sandwiched between putting planets to a sword kurita and i would gas a planet just to have it liao. Having two hyper aggressive, insanely fanatical militaries basically forces davion to be great or anything less then they will be conquered. You dont have that issue with the houses, except maybe liao and well. Stiener had kurita but with marik being decentralized they could literally afford to be stupid. Kurita doesn't respect the steiner military overall and kinda have this love/hate boner for davion because the relationship of kurita and davion is actually closer, to me atleast, takeda and uesegi in some of the Japanese sengoku era. They love fighting davion because it is challenge.
Which Battletech characters do you think mirror Kenshin and Shingen the closest? I always thought Theodore to be pretty close to Shingen but I could never find anyone close to Kenshin.
@@leetman102 overall house Davion and kurita has that kind of rivalry in general, hanse Davion and Takashi kurita emblonizes that constant rivalry but Victor and Theodore got that fellowship going. For example one time, if remembered correctly, that Takeda was getting blockaded and could not access salt to provide his troops so uesegi decided to charge in and bring salt and other supplies saying that war should be won by men and swords, not fish and salt.
But the bottom line point I'm trying to make is that kurita focuses on Davion because they consider them their greatest rival.
The reason they are such determined rivals is because the two are more alike than they are different. Superficially, they appear to be opposites, but more than any other great house they share the same goals, use quite a few of the same methods, face the same issues, the only real differences are the internal logistics of state and the coat of paint they wear. Both of them are neofeudalistic autocracies run by dictators with absolute power.
The Taurians have quite a few historical grievances with the Federated Suns.
It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.
Because they right about everything except dealing with the Clans because the Clans are too busy fighting with the inner sphere's great houses and by the time they reach them they probably already have their guns and ships pointing at that very direction they're coming from.

The Federated Suns are especially interesting to me because of their particular military organization. Namely, they're really close to 8-9th Century Roman structure. The Marches have combined military-civilian government and March Militia units that are locally raised and maintained, used primarily for local military actions. The Guards have centrally located units (Crucis March or even New Avalon specifically) with top-tier kit and training and function primarily as the mobile reserve and offensive army of the AFFS, and answer directly to the First Prince (or his champion). This is strikingly similar to the Themes with their Strategoi and the Tagmata centered on Constantinople. Even their enemies are analogous, with the Combine being the similar-but-not-quite-the-same top-tier military power with antithetical ideology akin to Persia or the Arab Muslims, and the CapCon being akin to the Slavs, Bulgars, and other northern neighbors who were impossible to squash permanently and who often won major battles (especially through ambush) but who ultimately couldn't defeat the Roman Empire and were periodically smashed badly enough to be pacified for generations. Being a big fan of the medieval Romans, the FedSuns look extra nifty.
March, by the way, is a historical term for a military border holding. It literally means "borderland" and is traditionally a heavily militarized holding specifically intended as a front line and staging area against a regional enemy. Use of the term fits the FedSuns particularly well considering their Anglo-French heritage, given that Charlemagne famously established roughly a dozen marches throughout his holdings. The way they function may be closer to the Roman Themes, but the basic purpose fits the label well.

Minor addendum for you - medieval European, not Roman. The Roman Empire had fallen long before that, around the 5th century, when the concept of the "March" was Charlemagne, over 4 centuries later. Other than that, pretty much spot on :)

Nice take on things, I appreciate that you're mostly looking at it from the US perspective but the Fed Suns, IIRC, were based on medieval England and France. The border marches being more or less separate states, feudalism and nepotism, politicking and assassination from those in power but some limits. Basically "Don't rock the boat, you're too powerful" and someone gets stomped on.
They do use *some* assault mechs though, most commonly the Victor as it can keep up with the heavies, primarily as command mechs. I think I read somewhere the Banshee as well but that may be Federated Commonwealth? Fast, brawly assaults aren't unheard of though.

That really kicked into high gear with the FedCom civil war. In the succ wars they had equal amounts of variants that replace autocannons with lasers (Blackjack 1DB, Rifleman 4D whatever the one with PPCs is, Suburbanmech) as they have lasers for autocannons (Thunderbolt 4D the one with an AC/20, Rifleman whatever with 2 AC/20s)
As a merc, House Davion drew me to them cause of the exceptional pay and salvage in their contracts. Fastest way to make cash and get mechs is to go kick the teeth outta the Caps for some juicy incentives the Davions hand out.

In the real world the federated suns economy probably wouldn't be to bad. Most of the time it actually makes sense to spread business out because the natural allocation of resources and people is spread out and because once you've hit a certain size of factory you don't really get much out of being bigger it just gets more chaotic to manage.

It's interesting how RUclipsrs have fallen in line with the notion of referring to The Capellans as North Korea when in the 1980s it was pretty obviously China + Russia.
Because as times change the references of 30-40 years ago and the current state of the world don't match. The russia and china of the time battletech was written, or i guess fleshed out are vastly different than what they are today. RUclipsrs use North Korea in space as analogue since it instantly communicates what they are more accurately to the average viewer without needing to explain that it's a mix of the soviet union and pre-(mass scale famine/industrialisation/modernisation) china.
In my opinion, battletech is so old that a lot of the real life source material used as inspiration either doesn't exist anymore, or is so vastly different that real life comparisons just dont work. So, yes. North Korea in space.

And is all the more true for the 32nd Century Capellans of the Dark Age era as the Chancellor is now seen as a divinity in some respects, a sort of living god like the Kims get treated.

Back when I first got into Battletech, I got the boxed set and all it talked about was the Houses. Davion/FedSuns was the one I liked the most.
My primary factions to love are Comstar and Free Rasalhague Republic.
But the more I learn about the other Houses, the Clans, and Periphery states... The more I like the FedSuns and House Davion.

In terms of general living standards, the LC is overall the better choice, though. The thing with the FedSuns is that it's a bunch of big, utopian jewel worlds, while most of its vast territories and the populations living there are actually pretty damn poor and underdeveloped. The overall FedSuns economy is closer to Liao and Kurita than it is to those of the Lyrans or FWL, and access to modern healthcare or good education is outright a luxury for most FedSun citizens, if not just a dream.
Well, marches... exacted from game Europa universalis, a march is a step away from a vassal, it still has to come and help you in your wars, offensive or defensive makes no difference, and they still don't have any saying in their demanded contribution, but they do not pay you in levy and tax as heavily as a vassal anymore. They are not sovereign states and do not have their own foreign policy but you cannot annexe them anymore as you could potentially do to your vassals. Or something along those lines...

Also, Fed Suns and the Fed Commonwealth are basically space NATO.
Now I may not be a fan of the Combine, but it was nice seeing them wipe the smugness off the face of Davion when they went on their field trip to Avalon
41:00 Correction, it was mostly forces from the Terran Hegemony/Star League proper that were committing most of the war crimes. The Fed Suns were almost a non-factor after the Taurians opened the war by more or less annihilating the Davions' navy.
Of course, tell that to your average Taurian and they'll tell you it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. They were part of the same invading army as everyone else, they're just as guilty for the war crimes inflicted on them as Amos "Baby Killer" Forlough was.

Davion is the 'good guy' simply by being between the Capellans and the Daconis Combine. You get the scrappy freedom faction, not an infinite war machine like the Lyrans, that loves big guns and fights the space communists on both sides.

In a setting where warfare is fought by giant mechs and nuclear weapons are throw at each other on a whim everyone in that universe will have a lot of innocent blood on their hands, but the sheer gal that the Federated Suns believe that they are the most Noble and Pure faction in the setting is unbelievably egotistical on their parts considering how many warfare of conquest they fought throughout the years. In Battletech every major house are like those in Game of Thrones cutthroat, treacherous, lying, deceptive and brutal when it comes to politics, at least the the rest of the inner sphere doesn’t hides it ugly nature compared to the Suns.
The fedsuns dont mass execute civilians every single chance they get so, no, this is just kneejerk reaction to hypocrisy on your part. They're still absolutely better than cappies and dracos.

They’re mostly based on western countries, including the United States, France, and Britain, so they incorporate common points of criticism of those nations into this faction.
I have a hard time explaining Fed Suns without comparing it to 1980s USA (although 2020s USA is more like Free Worlds League, at each others throats all the time).
Fed suns military biggest problem with there mechs atleast is desire to stay technically advance. They will ruin mechs and vehicles with to much gear or tech. There is reason they failed to create the warhammer.
The fed suns just make it so hard to like them but they want you to so badly lol.
I am realizing that I do favour a lot of the military stuff of the FedSuns. Their mechs are straight up badass and reliable.

The Federated Suns are a great hpuse to play if you don't want to think too hard about the hypocrisy and brutality. Unlike their arch nemesis, and very misunderstood, and far more glorious, and overall cooler neighbors. With the other houses you have to face the very real fact that your playing a, very bad person .

Calling the Fed Suns army basic feels like an unearned insult. If an army can consistently bring out and demonstrate fundamental competency across all branches of the military, then that is force cabable of standing their ground. They won't get lost, chacing gimmicks and becoming one trick pony. A generalist is always going to have something that will be decent for the job at hand, and often times thats enough. The only thing they really suck at is logistics, which is a huge weakness, though.
Good? The only good there is, is to spread the light and peace of Blake!

In terms of good guys it's the periphery powers, like, all of them, especially the taurians, they exclusively defend themselves.
They're the closest thing you'll get to good guys both in-universe and in the real world. No nation has ever or will ever exist that is perfect. You just have to pick your flaws and what do you know, the Federated Suns picked some fairly negligible flaws.

After reading through the Warriors Trilogy, it’s nice to see the Fedsuns truly struggle and suffer from consequences. The Warriors Trilogy just made me tired of Hanse getting a ton of wins without much consequences, while the Capellans were the ones who actually had to struggle to stay alive

to be fair to the fed-suns when it comes to the taurian concordat, the taurians aren't exactly known as the nicest faction out there. they didn't sign anything regarding rules and regulations involving war and they like to remind everyone that to them, nothing is a war crime if they are doing it, but really like to complain when someone does it to them.
They never used WMDs offensively prior to the WoB jihad, which was when the BT devs decided the Taurians needed dragging through the mud as they were too nice a faction. I'll take people who didn't need to sign a treaty to be decent about war crimes over those who squawked loudly about it and gave us the Reunification and Succession Wars any day.
