There were over 200 Jedi at the Battle of Geonosis. Somehow, even though they go back there several times in the Clone Wars, most of those 200 Jedi died off screen during Attack of The Clones yet they didn't become extinct from going back any of those times, but there can potentially be thousands of Force users all over the galaxy. The whole point of the era it's set in is that the Jedi were all but wiped out.
In the OT you had Luke, Obi-Wan, Darth Vader the Emperor and eventually Leia.
Kanan a former padawan who reached knighthood after training Ezra in Rebels.
Ahsoka was introduced in the Animated Clone Wars series and basically did nothing after leaving the Jedi Order before turning up in Rebels.

I think the biggest problem is the philosophy and religion behind the jedi and sith. In the OT, you got Yoda and Obi-wan discussing the force in a spiritual way. The sequels expanded on that with shades of Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, Nihilism, and Humanism. In the KOTOR/Old Republic series, games and books full of force users, we get deep philosophical discussions about humanism vs determinism. Modern Disney Star Wars lacks any of that. We just have Filoni copying Asian films thinking that makes his projects "deep". They even started calling the remaining Jedi without a master "Ronin".

She should have had an identity crisis as a mandalorian instead. In the mandalorian and BOBF, it is established that surviving mandalorians like the children of the watch blame Bo Katan being gifted the darksaber by Sabine for the destruction of mandalore, believing Bo's rule was cursed by not honorably winning the blade (Side note: Ezra is technically the last legitimate mandalore as the Nightsisters were in possession of the Darksaber when they made Maul run away and Ezra defeated the spirit possessing Sabine and then used the darksaber to kill the nightsister spirits, if he kept the darksaber instead of leaving it, he would have had a legitimate claim, i find it hilarious that Ezra was technically the leader of mandalore for a minute or two before leaving the blade behind for Sabine to pick up).
It would have been a far better arc to have Sabine forgive herself and wear her armor once again to save her best friend instead of just completely displacing Ezra as he now brings nothing to the table that Sabine doesn't as she has the force.

I love this take. It is a very controversial take in online Star Wars communities, because part of something “feeling like Star Wars,” such as Andor, is precluded by lightsabers and force and, loosely speaking, iconography.
The problem is that, what often comes with the territory here is *style over substance,* and too many Star Wars fans are fans of Star Wars as a stylistic expression and not as a substantive fiction. Lightsabers and the force are *cool,* and so fans will swallow *a great deal* of average storytelling, then drink in Star Wars’ (admittedly) solid world building, blend the two together with gratuitous amounts of *headcanon,* then discuss these as if they are actual arguments for the substantive quality of the Star Wars *story.*
What they don’t realize is that the substantive fiction being better in the past *is why* they, to this day, prefer the original trilogy, the world building is why they appreciate the prequels, and all of this is why the sequels and most content since get thrown into the discount bin.
The Jedi *are* ruining Star Wars, and too many Star Wars fans uncritically examine the fiction at a very shallow depth, which aids and abets this narrative dysfunction.

    • @Ebalosus
      @Ebalosus 10 месяцев назад +5

_"Style over substance"_ is a perfect way to encapsulate nigh all modern additions to extant franchises. Like what has NuWars added to the franchise that has had any staying-power within either the fandom or the broader audience? Say what you will about the prequels, but at least they expanded the Star Wars lore. Modern Star Wars has done nothing of the sort, and has been content to just recycle and pillage ideas from the old EU instead of adding something new to the canon.

The problem isn't the Jedi themselves, but rather Disney's cultural marxism, the concept that "everyone is special if they believe hard enough". Coupled with the watering down of lore, their teachings, their training. Now it's all a big game of self-inserts, starting with Reva.
No one complained about the Jedi in the post RoTJ EU, in fact many of them are the best EU characters: Mara Jade, Kyle Katarn, Corran Horn, the Solo siblings, Cade Skywalker.
Why ? Because they had depth, agency and were dynamic characters that evolved through time.

You open up with a statement about "cultural Marxism" but include nothing about cultural or Marxist about what Disney is doing here.
It's lazy writing. Pure and simple. It's quite clear there isn't really a clear vision of what they want outside of being able to keep the franchise relevant for as long as possible for as cheap as possible and profiting from it. If anything, watering down something so that you can sell it to a more broad audience actually sounds more like a capitalist take and Disney has always followed the laziest way to make a buck.
People did complain about the Jedis of the Legends continuity, especially later on where they really start sounding like fan fiction and suffered from different writers having different ideas all at once. Star Wars isn't any stranger to bad writing and Disney's continuity isn't really any exception.

    • @pittland44
      @pittland44 10 месяцев назад +11

@@hyperion3145I must respectfully disagree to a point. The problem is that the cultural marxism is driving the proliferation of bad writing because they enforce intellectual hegemony (their word, not mine) on all their writers and so no one is able to gamble or deviate from the accepted narrative. Case in point, the fact that you can pretty much watch Star Wars now and, with a few noted exceptions, tell who the villain is based on their race and gender. This is entirely in line with both communist and fascist propaganda films of the 1920's and 30's. Also, cultural marxism drives down the quality of writing because it dismisses works that were previously noted as classics. so much of the problem with Hollywood writers now is they don't know any of the great literary works of ancient Greece or Rome, or the Renaissance and Shakespeare, or Dickens and Poe, or Tolkien and Steinbeck or really anyone else because so many of those works are dismissed as the work of "dead straight white males." Echo Chamberlain had a fantastic video on this showing that while so many of these people have degrees in screenwriting, none of them know almost anything about classic works of literature or the psychology behind it. That's not a capitalism problem, it's actually a university problem. The fact that so many of these people are out of places like Dartmouth and Sarah Lawrence and other such institutions should not be discounted. Also, we know that Disney is hiring writers and directors based on cosmetic features (Hispanic, woman, lesbian, etc.) and not on any prior work or pitched ideas. That's something that's become a glaring problem not just with Disney but with Hollywood is they're just giving these massive tentpoles to people who don't have any serious experience with either the source material or making movies or TV. That's a lot of what went wrong with the MCU, Rings of Power, The Witcher, etc. That's a big part of what's watering everything down, if they were actually following the principles of Laissez Faire as laid down by Adam Smith their product would actually get better over time, not worse. Anyways, that's my two cents.

I don't disagree with the lazy writing and lack of vision statement, but these issues are rooted into hamfisting their moronic ideology anywhere. What better exemplifies this than Mando Season 3 or Ahsoka ? So much obsession for "female empowerment", while trying so hard to portray someone as awful as Bo Katan as righteous.
"If anything, watering down something so that you can sell it to a more broad audience actually sounds more like a capitalist take and Disney has always followed the laziest way to make a buck."
Are you so incapable to see their double standards ? Their practices are purely capitalistic in the broadest sense, but their under the umbrella of "messages", "inclusion", "diversity".
"People did complain about the Jedis of the Legends continuity, especially later on where they really start sounding like fan fiction and suffered from different writers having different ideas all at once. "
These are moronic complaints. While yes, I can understand the problem of conflicting writers, like Karen Traviss or Troy Denning, whining about it being "fanfiction" while seal clapping at Ahsoka or TCW is a double standard
"Star Wars isn't any stranger to bad writing and Disney's continuity isn't really any exception"
Except you refuse to admit Disney's politicized stance and total lack of creativity or ingenuity, given their entire catalogue is centered around the Rebellion vs Empire.

Yes, she did. Rebels even played on that. Vader: “Revenge is not the jedi way.” Ahsoka: “I’m no jedi.”

Using a quote from Syndrome, “And when everyone’s super, no one will be”. Disney is real-life Syndrome.

i'm one of the few that wants to see dogfights. the whole damn franchise has 3 good dogfights. 2 from the og movies and the rogue one. star wars =/= flipping psychic monks. prequels to me proved that not even lucas cared about dogfights.

    Two options:
    A) a horrendously written show with bad characters, plot, world building, no planning ahead/foreshadowing etc. but Jedi / Sith in it (Ahsoka)
    B) a well written show with a coherent, sound plot, engaging characters / character dynamics, clear arcs and planning etc. but no Jedi / Sith in it (Andor)
i think the large majority would agree that B is a better option than A for star wars on any level.
I agree that a hypothetical option C, with the writing of B, and the "star wars-ness" of A would be more interesting, but I fail to see how anyone could pick A.

Ashoka went from ok to terrible faster than any piece of media I can remember. Sabine going from force inept to master Jedi was the greatest joke in Star Wars history

As far as i know, being a force user was a mix of birth and Training. You needed the ability to use the force, and the Training to make use of it. While there are special Force abilities that are innate, most are the product of training and allignment. Not to mention only the Force, Light Saber combat is a Martial Art and takes years of training too.
That was my understanding for the most time.
The Sequels destroyed that. Rei wasnt just able to use the Force, she was able to use techniques that she cant have known how to use them.
That made me realize that nobody working on Star Wars has any idea anymore what a Force User actually is. Jedi are just the most prominent Force users, thats why its easy to blame it just on them. But for me atleast, it isnt the Jedi, its the Force itself that the people at Lucas Arts have no clue anymore how to write about it

The issue as stated is that the jedi are being applied as a lazy band-aid.
They think slapping it on will fix all issues and thus they door a worse job thinking the band-aid will fix it all.
At this point it is like hacking off the legs of someone and then putting hello kitty band-aid on each leg and complaining at the man with the hacked off legs for not being able to walk.

The whole making Sabine a Jedi thing made me like her a whole lot less. It took a while for me to warm up to her in Rebels but what made me a fan of the character was when Rebels did the opposite of Ahsoka.
Kanaan trained Sabine to use the Darksaber back in Rebels and it was implied she had Force potential but they went completely in the other direction. When Sabine got frustrated by Ezra and Kanaan's Force abilities, she actively compensated for her lack of such abilities with Mando tech. Retractable cord for pulling her weapon back to her hand from a distance, repulsor gauntlets to imitate a close range Force push etc.
In both Canon and Legends, the Mandos are supposed to be skilled enough to match Jedi, so seeing a Mando reject the Jedi stuff and imitate it with tech was great. Also a perfect fit for Sabine as a tech and weapon specialist. Showed that you don't need to be a space wizard to be a badass in this setting, which is always appreciated.
Making Sabine a Jedi just spits in the face of all of that. The fact she seems to have completely dropped her counter Jedi tech based way of fighting in favor of Force abilities she explicitly cannot use for most of the series feels incredibly out of character for her.
If it had to be done, why not have her relying on her old tricks only to slowly be stripped of all the toys and end up in a situation where she can't rely on substitutes and has to learn to use the Force? It would be far more true to her character and feel a lot more impactful imo. Prefer she be kept as the tech based counter Jedi but if she had to become a Jedi it could've been done better than this.
Though I'll give Sabine this much, she didn't need to have a returning male character nerfed into the ground and written out of character to make her look better like Rey did. Adult Ezra feels like an older version of who he always was and his refusal of his old saber was followed by one of the rare demonstrations that a skilled enough Jedi or Sith really doesn't need one in most cases and makes sense considering how long Ezra had to manage without one. He's no Skywalker who could save the day solo without breaking a sweat, he's a cocky little shit all grown up and wanting to show off, even when it's not the best idea. That's Ezra and I hope he's kept more true to his character than Sabine going forward. You'd think this wouldn't be an issue considering Dave Filoni wrote all this stuff but much as I love him at his best, in Ahsoka he seems to have forgotten that the main character always held her sabers with a reverse grip as both a kid and adult, with external media specifying that it was a habit Anakin failed to break her of. Because in her own show, Ahsoka uses a standard grip 90% of the time and Anakin briefly uses a reverse grip against her. Damn it Dave how do you fuck that up?

Well for Star Wars Online, it was a mixture of Sony Online Entertainment and Lucasarts looking at the massive success of World of Warcraft, and noticing that if they wanted to stay competitive they had to change. Or so was the thought process behind it. It had the exact opposite effect and the game went from slow decline to uncontrollable nosedive.

It's easy to fix mitaclorians, how ever you spell that, just turn them into a bacteria that thrives in high force inviroments, like say creatures that the force is strong with maybe, and actually have no affect on using the force but become a fair indicator for finding people capable of learning to.
