  • One of the absolute highlights of our Alaska cruise was visiting the Hubbard Glacier. The captain of our cruise ship, the Holland America Amsterdam, did a nice job navigating the ship close to the terminus of the massive 7 mile-wide glacier. We were able to get quite a few clips of the Hubbard Glacier calving as well. It was typically accompanied by a rumbling sound.
The icy glacial waters of Disenchantment Bay Alaska that our cruise ship traversed was surreal with chunks of ice of various sizes & shapes that intensified their presence as we got closer to the glacier, passing Haenke Island. The surroundings were beautiful, and we had nice views of the Valerie Glacier as well. The cruise ship in the distance was the Island Princess by Princess Cruises, and was waiting for our ship to leave so she & her guests can get closer for a nice look. Finally our ship left back into Yakuta Bay.
This video is in 4K UHD resolution, and is from our 2017 June Alaska cruise. Enjoy!

Your video is good, except for the background music. It would be much better to hear the natural "rumbling sound" the glacier makes.

I agree for some parts of the video for sure- thanks for the feedback!

Which cruise has this Hubbard glazier? 7 days trip? Seattle to Anchorage?

For a 7 day round-trip back to the same port you can find one that leaves from Seattle or Vancouver, though not every cruise will visit there. And of course a cruise to/from Seward/Whitter/Anchorage may include a stop there as well.

How close to the ships get to the glaciers ? Looks to be around 100-200 yards.

It depends on the conditions, but yeah a couple hundred yards sounds about right. Don't forget binoculars!

We are going in July and I was trying to find out it is better to stay on the cruise ship to view the glaciers or pay the extra money and do an excursion. Any feedback on comments from people who did the excursion?

For the Hubbard glacier the cruise ship would get close so everyone can get a nice view. I’m not aware of any excursion for it, as there is no port. For a glacier like Mendenhall in Juneau, however, there are many excursions for it. For us we did a diy via taxi and did some hiking.

Zipline would be cool as long as there were no screaming idiots beside me!
