Ok did I get this right? Double Uni Knot from mono to 1x Sighter (18 inches) Double Uni Knot from 1x to 3x (14 inches) Tippet Ring 3 to 4 feet of tippet
Just picked up this model of the Contact II from y'all. Can't wait to use it in Colorado's technical tailwaters! Upgrading from a Redington Strike (fine platform for learning euro technique) and can't wait to feel the increased sensitivity!
When I started running 4x in my reel and then tapering down to 6-7x to the fly in my tight line game , it opened up a lot of distance, accuracy and even sensitivity in my nymphing game. Initially I tried the small lines to deal with high winds but after fishing it I just couldn’t go back to a bigger line wether mono or to a level euro line. I’ve had no issues with this in really cold weather either. Great video and as always so informative!!! Thanks!!!
Good comment here. You are definitely the upper end of the learning curve, as light lines like that take a lot of experience to handle, most intermediate anglers need simple rigs that keep their flies in the water to build reps. I'll bet you could feel a guppy with that rig you're describing haha!
@@redsflyshop Thanks Reds Fly Shop , if my game has gotten better, then you have something to do with it with your informative videos and reviews on equipment. There’s a lot to be said for this in my opinion. Thanks!!!
If you’re struggling to see the pink and yellow sighter, they make a black and white sighter as well that’s fantastic in light conditions where the pink yellow gets washed out. I also run 12” of 1x sighter which helps me gauge depth. If my sighter is too long I tend to spend too much time finding the bottom of it. Great stuff
This is great. What kind of knots do you use when fishing light tippets? Ie 7x or lighter? Tailwaters I fish out east I’m typically forced to use ultralight tippets and tiny bugs to ensure high catch/take rates. Thanks.
If I'm fishing 3' of water I'm going to run about 3' of tippet and keep that sighter tight to the water but not "in" the water all that often. As far as tippet size, I run 5 and 5.5X almost exclusively. I'll go to 6X for small flies, but not that often. Does this help?
I have the 10' 9" 3 wt and love it. I am looking to add another rod . Fish back east in for medium sized rivwers ( 60-80 feeet) mainly as fishing size 14 and 16 nymphs. Know you fished both rods but what would you choose the 10' or 10' 9" 2wt.
The 10' rod almost for sure, really delicate and extremely accurate casting. If you deal with tight spots, brush, or require hitting small pockets the 10' model is deadly accurate.
Well I think since you have 14' of mono to work with it would be a long time before that gets completely worn. What most of use do however is you can peel the coating off the line and expose the mono underneath it.
Silly Question, (apologies, having never Euro nymphed); other than static reach, what is the benefit of a longer rod on a big river? like can you not just make a longer over head cast with these type of rods to get the fly to where you need it then watch the line for movement? they look to have a nice action to allow at least some kind of roll cast surely, no??
Oh it has to do with the angle you have between the rod tip and the fly. It needs to be a straight line. In a nutshell, shorter rods drag the fly toward you, where as longer rods allow you to keep the fly running north/south (with the current) rather than across it.
If I were going to use jig streamers, big stones (#6), and crawfish quite a bit I would definitely go for the #3. If on the Yakima exclusively, tough call. Probably the #3. Tough choice though!
Hda fav variant #16 T's stone dark Cousin it sculpin Thingamabobber white/ yellow If i won id buy a shooting head from you guys and rip up to tennessee and tear up some tailwaters. Currently in fl so id break it in on some crappie/talapia in the burbs for sure.
Great video and demonstration on the Euro set up Joe. Always good to have the knowledge of doing thing different at times!! Thanks for sharing!!
You bet, thank you for watching. Really appreciate positive feedback. It's appreciated.

Ordered the same rod 2 days ago... can't wait to try it!
Oh dude you'll love it. Hope you ordered it at Red's. We ship crazy fast.
@@redsflyshop I'm from Europe, but if I lived in USA, I would order it at Red's :)
Well I've been wanting a t&t rod for a while so I'm sold. Just ordered it
Awesome. Thanks!

great video! how would you adjust the sighter and tippet lengths for a small stream?
I’m using echo shadow 2 in 10’ 3wt.

Question? When then the leader is worn and in need of replacing. Would I cut leader back to coated section and tie on like a conventional set up?

Do you happen to know the weight and diameter of the reddish colored mono coming out of the coated euro line? Thanks in advance!
Looks to be a .013 diameter mono. They don’t list the lb rating but given the diameter I’m guessing it’s 12lb.
How does the 2 wt compare to 3wt for overall fishing around the Yakima? Does it have enough power?
