The Language Situation scenes are supposed to complement any regular language course by providing a sort of language "street experience".
You can see "real" people talking their "real" language. They are all quite taken by surprise in this unusual situation (somebody asking silly questions) and they react very spontaneously.
Könnt ihr mir bitte den Weg zur
    Beringsstraße sagen?
Can you tell me the way to the Beringstraße, please ?
    Zur Beringstraße?
    Sorry, keine Ahnung.
To the Beringstraße? Sorry, no idea.
    Schade. OK. Tschüss.
    What a pitty. O.K. Goodbye.
Hallo. Weisst du den Weg zur Beringstraße?
Hello. Do you know the way to the Beringstraße?
Nein, ich komme nicht von hier, .
    Entschuldigung
No, i'm not living here, sorry
    Schade, schönen Tag noch.
    Gleichfalls, tschüss
    What a pitty, beautiful day,yet.
    Likewise, goodbye.
    Guten Tag.
    Good day.
Können Sie mir den Weg zur
    Beringstraße sagen?
Can you tell me the way to the Beringstraße,please?
Kenne ich nicht. Wir sind nicht aus Münster. Wir sind nur Besucher.
I don't know. We aren't living here. We stay just for visit.
Na gut, dann wünsche ich Ihnen noch einen schönen Tag.
Well then i wish you a beautiful day, yet.
Zur Beringstraße? Ja, aber wenn ich einen Atlas bei mir hab
To the Beringstraße? Yes but only if i got a map with me.

Very clever way of teaching German and entertaining. Much more entertaining than sitting in a classroom with the nose stuck in a book. Glücklicherweise habe ich es in Hamburg gelernt da ich dort 12.5 Jahre gelebt habe. Auf dieser Weise kann ich zuhören und es üben.

Those people were friendly, because they been `bummeln´ (means to walk openminded without hurry through the streets whilst looking for interesting things). If you do that in Berlin at 8 a.m. on Monday, responses will be much more impressive/rude/unpolite/threatening.

Actually "tschüss" has it's origin in the very north of Germany. In the area around Hamburg.
But it's a common greeting now.
Actually I would have thought that it's uncommon in the south Bavaria, Austria, Swabia, but I'm not sure.

Think of the nasal sounds of individual letters or of Dip or Tripthongs (combinations of letters of 2 = Dipthong, or 3 = Tripthong). One word for instance is the name of German city ''Köln'', the ''n'' is the nasal sound. Another city could be ''Frankfurt am Main'' where each word contains a nasal. The reason I would describe German as being a highly Nasal language is that relative to some other languages it uses a lot. German conjugations and conjunctions have a lot of nasal additions to words.

Well, in the US, learning languages is wierd. Since Mexico is near, many people are really focused on learning Spanish which isn't that hard. But the school I went to required German. I've been taking it since 4th grade, and I'm in 11th now and I still dont understand it that well. But I'm sure if I was in a different environment I would have caught on alot quicker and I would be very fluent in it by now...
But the languages aren't that different at all!
And your English is awesome by the way.

@Cronkonium German is a very throat-based language which is probably why you get that impression. An american aquaintance of mine told me once, that for him even when german couples talk to each other it sounds like they're giving orders all the time. :D

  • @Cronkonium
    @Cronkonium 12 лет назад

@Karash770 Agreed it just sounds that way overall, however I had never encountered that with any German speakers I have met so far. However that is a very small number, none the less I have found that the posturing is what gets me most. I know that German is a more gluteral language, and in fact the first differences between West Germanic and the other groups was the loss of many nasal sounds and soon many gluteral ones. I think the posturing is simply they are in a busy place, so I understand.

"I'm Polish but living since many years in Germany." There are some mistakes in this sentence. It is never "since many years," but in this case it must be "for many years."
Better: "I'm Polish but have been living for many years in Germany."
Perhaps you can correct my German sometime.

@Mtbfanro One thing after watching a few of these videos I have noticed is when people introduce themselves or say good-bye (Tschuss, bis bald, usw (usw is basically an acronym but means etcetera)) they are incredibly nice. However whist speaking they often sound very rude, some of them are nice but many sound rude to me. I am Canadian and I find it very hard to tell if Germans are angry because many speak with the same intonation all the time, also I find they mumble hard just like us too.
