  • @gwcrispi
    @gwcrispi 3 года назад +85

I've had DCT since January. Six track days and 50+ autocross runs later I've had zero issues. Coolant and Oil have never gotten too hot. Brake performance has been great. I still have half of my pads left which is just nuts. The interior is cheap, don't care, don't have time to look at it. Seats are great for the track, so-so for the street, very thin. My biggest gripe is the tires. Wish they had gone with Michelin PS4S. A stiffer sway bar from Whiteline fixes the understeer to a large degree. While I love flicking through the gears myself on track, I've found that TrackSense mode is faster than me.

I know what "normal" is from driving. Coolant around 200 and Oil in the low 200's to 250. So I know if they're going up. The needle indicator near the Tach is bogus. The pointer is just below 9 o'clock (normal) as soon as the temp gets to 140. From 140 to 200 the needle doesn't move any more. I posted on this on the Veloster N forum.

I've owned a 2019 GTI rabbit edition manual and up until today, a GLI 35th anniversary edition manual . Yesterday I took the N DCT out for a 1 1/2 hour test drive (by myself of course). I then went straight to the VW dealer and drove a GTI Autobahn DSG for an hour. I wanted to compare the two dual clutches. I had never driven the VW DSG 7 speed, I drove the 6-speed DSG a few years ago, thought it was good but still opted for a manual. I am a VW fan, have owned several, thought the GTI was the best for the money in the segment. It is hard to put into words how superior the N is compared to a GTI DSG. The GTI seems sluggish, slow and soft and unrefined by comparison. I was kind of shocked once I had the proper perspective. The N is far more refined than the 7 gen GTI, yes I said it, more refined, much more. The 8th gen GTI will be out in a few months, imo there is no way it will catch up to the 2021 DCT N, not a chance. The N is fast, really fast, each upshift rockets you forward and it just keeps pulling. The regular automatic mode is the best I've ever driven, it shifts like you're using the paddles. I traded my GLI and bought an N today.

I just got a Kona N and the DCT is as good as the ones in 100k cars.I think in a tech manual it matches the shift times of the dct or dsg in a 2020 ferrari model and shifts as good as an RS5 I have driven. Its a new wet clutch and having owned and driven many cars--hyundais has come a long way.I also had owned a 2020 stinger GT 3.3TT for a while and that ZF 8 speed auto was also fantastic--better then the ones in chargers and benzes.it also auto rev matches when you take turns in it without using the brake and does so with the precision and smoothness of a high end watch.Iv only had it a few days and it is my favorite car i have had.

My son just got a 2020 N Manual (almost new). I’m old, but love racing cars. I never owned one. We rented several cars to 1) teach clutch, and 2) compare speed, handling, etc. C7 Z51, Polaris Singshot, 370z, WRX, Miata RF.
I loved the Corvette. More power than I’m able to control on a road, but great and scary- if you got $$. 370z had good acceleration, and good handling, but not like a Miata (also decade old design). The Miata was just too damn slow! Polaris was a blast but not super fast and impractical for daily driving. WRX is a good car, but I hated the turbo lag. Then there’s the Veloster N. Never drove one until we test drove and purchased it. Funnest, best handling on back roads at frightening, perfectly planted balls-out speeds. It was the R&T 2020 Performance Car of the Year! It beat out some of the best cars out there!
I could care less about the interior. It’s functional and comfortable. I don’t need to spend $90k+ for leather and electric, heated seats and steering wheels or Bose speakers. It kicks ass and is an absolute rocket that you aren’t afraid of sliding off the road. Great review guys!! Thanks 🙏

It is much floatier and doesn't feel as capable, even if it is on paper. The VN has unbelievable handling. Crazy fun. I only wish it had a 2nd N custom mode. That would mean you could have 1 loud for highway driving and 1 quiet for town driving. Since owning this, for some reason, 6 people in honda junkers thought their car was faster. They were not. Why are people in old beaters always trying to race? If the Civic type R wasn't marked up to 45-50k, I would have gotten it, but I am VERY happy with the VN DCT. I also find it interesting that folks consider a $34k hot hatch "affordable". With a household median income of $61k a year in the US, I feel like we're setting expectations a little high and encouraging people to buy cars they can't afford by labeling it as "affordable".
Believe me when I say I've been on car forums where someone's asked if it's a bad decision to trade in a car that they still owe $12k with no equity for a brand NEW "affordable" $28k car.

When the Veloster N was introduced I thought it was an appealing track toy but little else. The upgrades including what is apparently a vastly improved Hyundai DCT have reduced the distance between the Veloster N and the GTI but I'd still stick with my GTI.
Reasons? It's inside where I spend my time interacting with a vehicle and the interior features and trim of my Autobahn GTI are far more appealing than the Veloster. The "N" still looks and feels like an econobox from the driver's seat. Secondly, the external appearance of the "N" doesn't quite match the inflated Hot Wheels looks of the Civic Type R but it comes close. And I'm not 12 years old. Finally, among the features of the GTI I value most is its versatility in terms of its mission. When needed the generous and highly usable cargo space of the GTI comes close to or exceeds that of the Veloster and even subcompact SUVs its size. And while the unique 3rd door of the Veloster makes the rear seat more accessible than would be the case with a 2 door coupe, the GTI does it one better with four doors.
I'm impressed by the specs of the Veloster's engine but I've long ago learned that (a) VW's engine specs for its remarkable EA888 engine are typically understated and (b) major increases in both HP and torque can be had with a 30 minute Stage I tune of the GTI's ECU. (Contrary to a common misunderstanding such a tune does not invalidate the GTI's warranty.)
All in all, Mr. Biermann and his associates continue to do an outstanding job on Hyundai and KIA vehicles. But I wouldn't give up my GTI for a Veloster N.

Great review from these guys, as always! Have driven both the Type R and the updated Veloster N. My two cents: Type R had staggering amounts of turn in, precision, road feel. On the track or if you want to log best numbers, that's the bomb. But the Veloster N DCT was even more fun to drive. The power was smoother, more predictable. The steering and road feel are sublime. Between these cars, it's a matter of preference, they're both incredibly good and both more fun than cars costing A LOT more that I've driven. The GTI is a great option if you don't mind numbing the driving experience a bit and need this to be your DD commuter car. The 2015 + and 2022 WRX is a great option if you need AWD and want total practicality and bang for the buck with in a very competent package. I drove a WRX with Michilin Pilots and was blown away by how fast it could move through familiar corners. The WRX and it will hold up against a lot of competition. But the most fun to drive of all of these overall, to me, was the Veloster N. Only bummer is that there aren't more of these kinds of cars around. All of them VERY capable and entertaining. Having driven all the cars mentioned, hope this helps with decision between them. They're all great, just different flavors.

They could possibly drop in the 2.5T for not too much more, but AWD would take major modifications, a hardcore suspension would have few takers and be too expensive, and a big upgrade of the interior would be tricky. The Veloster still has to sell in regular form as a cheap hatch, so the normal interior can't be upgraded significantly, and having to swap out major parts of the doors of dash for soft-touch materials would cost too much. The Civic already had a nice interior, so the Type R could get away with a few cosmetic upgrades.

Also it wouldn't take 'major modifications.' The fuel tank needs changed to open up a full driveshaft space but there is nothing else in the way.
Next, Hyundai just needs to collaborate with Mitsubishi again -- the current N engine is a cousin of the 4B11 in the Mitsubishi Evo X. Frankly with not a lot of changes the 4B11 could probably be put in the Veloster N -- giving it one of the best handling and performing AWD systems available.

Ultimately I went with the GTI because I was tired of waiting for the Veloster N to get its DCT, and the Mazda3 to get its turbo. I'm extremely happy with my choice for its versatility and qualities as a daily driver, as well as the HUGE aftermarket presence for when I'm ready to start modding.
That being said, both of my alternative choices are cars whose development I've enthusiastically followed for a couple years now, and it's SO great to see the expansion of the hot hatch market again. I like that there aren't really any perfect comparisons against any of the cars in this segment, as they all bring their own elements to the table in ways that distinguish them from the others.

    Top comment from reddit:
Looking around local dealers I see the Hyundai Veloster N somewhat as a hard sell. It was smart of Hyundai to include a non-performance package version at launch to get the notion that the cars were much cheaper than competitors or in a middle space between the GTI and Type R. However, looking online now the gap between a Veloster N and Civic Type R is around $3k now. On the lower end, you can get either GLI/GTIs for around $8k less with VW offering 60-72 month loans with 0% APR.
The bigger issue is that my local Hyundai/Kia dealers are some of the biggest shysters around. I am talking mandatory dealer options and doc fees to the tune of around $1500. Looking at a Kia Stinger was the worst dealership experiances I ever had and their old school profit tatics keeps me from ever considering anything from the brands.

That's a good way of putting it I think. I had a base GTI DSG for a couple years, and it was a great car, but perfectly described by the old adage "jack of all trades, master of none". It's a great daily, but not anywhere near as exciting as a real sports car. Everything is light and but with very little feeling. Thing is, I test drove the Veloster N manual when I was selling the GTI, and I expected the veloster to be more edgy and exciting, but it felt very similar, aside from manual vs auto. And the veloster interior frankly makes the GTI feel like an Audi.

    • @scotthilly5653

@@spacepxl it’s funny you say that, cause I thought the exact same. The Veloster was a little more exciting but I felt the diff, brakes, and trans were similar to the GTI. Mine is a 19 SE w/Experience, and the DCC makes the GTI ride amazingly well, the stereo is phenomenal, and it’s just so refined. I’m 22 years old and even felt the trade off for 10% more veloster excitement wasn’t worth it at all with such a bad interior, weird looking car, and stuff ride.

I bought a 22 Veloster n DCT. Best decision ever so far. Insane fun. The Audio is utter crap, but I just stick a bluetooth speaker on the passenger seat. Yes the panels are low quality plastic crap, but the driving experience is 100/100. Literally a go kart on drugs. It's incredibly fun. The only annoying thing is that you HAVE to get good winter tires.
One thing about the DCT. If you are in N mode and you FLOOR it to high speed, the DCT shifts so hard it punches you in the back. It makes the car feel like a rocket. It's awesome.

But this thing probably already has my heart.

@@Catgat37 Just make sure you change the oil much more than recommended. I'm doing every 3k. Also, I highly recommend getting different wheels and tires. The stock rims are 19 inches and the tires only add 2 or so inches to that. What that means is that if you hit a pothole or something, there is VERY little cushion. The impact can throw off your front tire sensors. Go 17" rims for more tire. I plan to get one summer set and one winter set. As far as oil choice, any S+ synthetic works, but i'm a huge fan of amzoil. If you are going to be driving the car hard, getting an oil cooler is a good idea as oil deteriorates hard at high temps. An add-on oil cooler has a valve that turns on when the engine gets above 200F. Hyundai also doesn't fix engines. They treat them as disposable, so make sure you don't add mods that invalidate the warranty. There is a decent chance you are going to have to replace the engine at least once in the next 5 years. The best part? The warranty is not made invalid by using this car on a racetrack so drive it hard.
      Go for it.

I'm a manual guy and I recently test drove a Veloster N too and I HATE saying it but the DCT is really damn good. Especially that grin shift where it powershifts from gear to gear, you can feel the transmission doing its thing and it didn't feel like a soulless transmission. I have yet to drive the manual and for a hot hatch I think I'd still prefer a manual but I won't judge you for getting a DCT, it's pretty good.
