Unironically: sometimes, you just need the port. If you want to charge it or back it up, and have some other usb-c device you need connected at the same time, a 2.0 port means you don’t need to whip out the dongleinator-9000 just to connect it.
A 3.0 port would obviously be better, but the processor was built for a phone that would only ever have one port, so there was no need to make it capable of dealing with more than that.
What *does* seem dumb/avoidable is making the charging port and the 3.0 port the same port.

@SwoggersLOLcompletely recycled metal is more expensive than what everyone else is using. Otherwise every company would say their product is made of like 60% recycled material. Unlike plastic that deteriorates after every recycling cycle, metal stay the same.

Faster ? 8GB could be faster. If you have 1 stick of 16gigs vs 2 sticks of 8 gigs, the 2 sticks of 8 gigs are twice as fast. It's not about how fast it is but about how much it can store before having to use swap memory and hammer the SSD.
This is only logical. It takes twice as long to fill a 16 gallon tank as an 8. Same diff when pouring them out. And these engineers think they're so smart!

It’s not meant for everybody. The whole idea is to get people into the Apple ecosystem. My gosh people use $500 Windows laptops that are piss performance not everybody needs something super fast with lots of RAM etc. etc. Some people are just needing something that can email web browse things of that nature. They don’t need the most high-performance laptop out there. If Apple were smart, they would lower the prices of the MacBook Pros.

I think people might be missing the point of this thing. The Neo is really an attempt at a Chromebook competitor for schools.
100% this is exactly what their target audience is, Microsoft abandoned schools when the raised the price of their surfaces to insane prices schools abandoned them and went to ASUS/ACER/Dell/HP and other products. 8gig of RAM might not be much for most users but it's enough for a primary school student to complete an assignment and with the launch of Apple Business Essentials this will put them in a very competitive position. Creating a larger generation of MAC users will grow Apples market share in the future at University and in Businesses; they already own the phone market and little innovation has been done in the past 3 years so they're pivoting to a more profitable area. They already know Jevon's Paradox is in effect AI and components will be hard to come by for some time so people won't be buying new phones for a while so they're moving their business model.
USB 2: shows that this is an insult to people Apple knows will buy anything they make.
Probably a limitation of the A18 Pro's peripheral controller, like the 8GB is likely a limitation of the memory controller. I wonder whether next year they will have the 12gb of the iPhone 17 Pro's A19 Pro
@erikjones1266 The 8GB is almost certainly because of the RAM shortage. If the memory controller can't handle more then it's likely because they didn't bother making a better one, because the shortage meant they weren't going to bother giving the thing more RAM anyway.
The real problem is that you (and many others) believe in a false consensus as people who watch youtube channels that are critical of Mac products. People in the real world that are buying a $600 laptop couldn't care less about usb 2 vs usb 3. They just see it as a port to plug their dongle into. Prosumers and professionals, the ones who actually care, aren't buying bottom of the barrel products. They are buying Macbook Pros which blow their competitors out of the water by a large margin.

its by design. they are making a cheaper product begrudgingly to enter into the cheaper market, but they have to make sure it is worse than their expensive products in every way to entice people to upgrade.
Apple are really playing wrong-field if that's the case, though. I'm one of the sort of people the Neo targets (And they've been targeting me with YT ads for it) and for people like me, a _heavier_ computer is the _better_ choice. I mean, considering how MASSIVE was flop of "windows macbook" (arm on windows) was...they didn't really had to do anything. Microsoft carefully prepared their own downfall without any outside help.
I WANT it to destroy the competition. Atleast then HP and Dell will start making laptops with good build quality as that is the best thing I have heard about the Mac Neo.
On a serious note I did buy a Macbook Air today and I will never recommend a Windows laptop to people who can avoid them.

Frankly, they're sorta courting me with this one too. Even the baseline MacBook Air is more than I need in a computer since I have a powerful desktop at home that stores my files and does my heavy computing, so for a portable one I basically just want an iPad that runs a full desktop OS. Yeah, Chromebooks exist, but ChromeOS is garbage spyware and the screens on 90% of them are worse. $600 for one of Apple's displays in an aluminum-chassis portable is honestly really good for the tier it sits within, especially when there's even Windows business laptops with slower CPUs, the same amount of RAM, creaky plastic cases, and crappy FHD screens at roughly the same price point.

NPCs need a chromebook and they're happy with that, For the actually talented kid you normally give them a windows laptop to complement their hobbies but Microslop dropped the ball hard and they're really bulky so kids usually have a horrible experience carrying those computers to school on top of the books they have to carry; This laptop is perfect for those kids, a full Desktop OS that can run professional applications well enough even with the limited RAM, while still being light and sturdy.
Have you seen the used laptop market lately? Salem Techsperts shows how bad it is because people selling laptop husks with no ram or storage for$400 because they can sell the ram and storage for more.
The used market is absolutely ruined right now. Then if the software you use isn't on Linux and there's no viable competing software you're stuck with windows 10 which is EOL. Sure you can do the trick to get windows 11 to work without tpm but Microsoft has started to patch that out of current installs

What did u expect for 499? If your thinking about the fact it only has 8GB of ram it’s already not meant for you. Besides, name another brand new laptop that’s not plastic, has a 1440p screen (technically a bit higher even) very good build quality, 1080p webcam, higher performance than a M1 chip (a18 pro chip has higher performance then m1) 7 years guaranteed software support, etc etc. not to mention the overhead for windows ram usage is higher then Mac, and all the slop u get with a windows install.
I just think of the 2.0 port as a charger port that can be used to transfer data in a pinch. It probably would've made more sense to switch its position with the 3.0 port though, and have them further apart or on opposite sides, so you don't have to lift the Mac to unplug something when both ports are occupied (assuming it's sitting flat on a tabletop). I wouldn't mind a 12GB RAM upgrade though, something a bit more capable while staying well under $1k (I'm guessing Apple would charge $100 for +4GB). Laptops are a secondary machine for me, so I want to keep it affordable, but I find it easy to use more than 8GB RAM even just doing non-demanding things.
tl,dr: Probably not for me, but the Air is a bit overkill for me too.

I get this is funny, but to be fair, this MacBook is a pretty sweet deal for people who want an entry level Mac without shelling $1000+ for one that can do all the basic computing they need. For $500-$600 it will fly off the shelves. It’s not “the worst MacBook”.

Also, for work, my first work laptop was a Thinkpad and I hated every second of it. Had it for 3 years and it was literally dying for what I needed it to do. Did a laptop refresh for a M3 MacBook Pro and my work quality of life is exponentially better.
