Hey guys. I realize this is a weaker episode. And I want to make clear it is no fault of Kaldellis but all on me. Want to apologize for poor performance on my end. However. I can promise you that the upcoming episodes will be much, much better!
There is another synthesis of entire Byzantine history in English from the 20th century. It had been written by Robert Browning, and it is a very decent book.
The rivalry between the Eastern Roman state and what was once the Western part of the Empire, overrun by the barbarians who created their own kingdoms, began when the Bishop of Rome proclaimed a Frank, as Roman Emperor in 800. From that time on, the Westerners whose spiritual father was the Pope, began to cultivate the narrative of the Empire of the Greeks in the East, in order to legitimize their own claim to the title. The sack of 1204 was the outcome of this bitter rivalry which had already culminated in 1054 with the Great Schism. What the Crusaders did was not Colonialism. They were invited by Alexios I to help him take out the Turks. The 1st Crusade was not exactly some 500 knights that Alexios had bargained for, but this massive movement aimed to retake the Holy Lands for Christendom, something that Basil II had also tried when he brought the Roman army to the outskirts of Jerusalem. Of course, some cunning leaders like Bohemond for example, had their own plans but that doesn't suggest that this was colonialism. Since Constantinople was pretty weak at the time, they felt that they could claim Eastern Roman territory, and so they did. The Eastern Romans were no Saints either; arrogant and megalomaniacs as they were, they kept calling everything and everyone in the West, except Venice, barbarian, or Frank, and we are in the 11th/12th century. The East Romans refused to acknowledge that the West was progressing rapidly and that 600 years had passed since the Gothic wars. They refused to accept that they couldn't look down on them anymore.
I seriously think you need to better plan the questions, set times by which you wish to ask them and then let your interviewee actually finish their points. If you don't cover everything that is fine but what is not fine is being rude to your interviewee. And interrupting your interviewee, during a time when they are simply trying to explain what happens in their book/in history (rants excluded) is extremely rude.

Veneration vs worship is a false dichotomy created to justify the idolatry, which is clearly derived from centuries of image worship and veneration in Greco-Roman culture. The Old Testament is full of God judging His people for image idolatry and the veneration of images is absent from the NT. Exodus 20:4-5 KJV Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: [5] Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; Notice that the Lord doesn't even say "Thou shalt not worship images" or "Thou shalt not venerate". He said not to *bow* or *serve* them. The Orthodox and Catholic bow, kiss, clean and take care of images. It doesn't matter what you call it, it is clearly a violation of the second commandment.

Invest in better mic and webcam. It is not expensive at all to have a decent hardware.

Kaldellis is a history genius.
