    The writer confirmed Crona isn't gendered at all. They just decided to translate Crona to be a boy since we don't have official gender neutral pronouns in English.

      Them and they can work for crona since ragnorak is always with him so it works. But irl when people who say they are gender neutral or want to be called them or they I honestly don't see much of a difference with that then calling them it. Either way it doesn't sound right. Unless they also have multiple personalities it doesn't sound right to call them "them" or "they". If I don't know what it is calling them "it" sounds correct. Like when people don't know the gender of a baby they say "So what is it?" the baby doesn't suddenly become inhuman just because you called it an it you just say "it because you don't know its gender. Even when I look up the word I get "a person or animal whose sex is unknown" So I still don't understand why the word "it" is somehow offensive if its used correctly.

      Shendue That's not what I meant. Does it actually matter what gender Crona is? Crona could be anything. I don't really understand that last sentence though. :/

      I thought that you implied it was cringey due to the fact that it was immature and disrespectful to genderless people. You know, people that don't like being labeled as "male" or "female".
      The subtle things you mention may be intentionally misleading, actually. As far as I know, the author himself said that Crona is supposed to be of ambiguous gender to start with, therefore they don't actually have a specified gender, since the author didn't give them one. Therefore, it does matter in a sense. The author made they genderless precisely because he wanted people to be uncertain about their gender and be confused by their ambiguity.

    • @daisyfriend9309
      @daisyfriend9309 7 лет назад +15

      Shendue You have a point there. That's not what I meant at all though :(
      I just find the ways a lot of people put out their own arguments really cringy and overall disrespectful to the character. Like, sometimes others say that Crona's gender depends on his personality and the way he dresses, when those traits don't determine anyone's real gender.

  • @Kumahachi8
    @Kumahachi8 8 лет назад +159

    Actually, Crona is neither gender. Okubo, the manga's author, has asked for the translations by Funimation and Yen Press to be disregarded. The translations only used the term 'he' because they felt that 'it' was insulting to Crona as a character. In conclusion, Crona is only a boy in the English anime and in one manga translation, and the creator doesn't like it, making this non-canon, meaning that it must be disregarded.

  • @CronAGaming
    @CronAGaming 9 лет назад +36

    Crona refers to himself as "Boku". Boku is one of the Japanese words to say "I" but it is not specific to one gender (used to be only for boys but in recent years girls use it in a tomboy sense). And in Japanese you can call someone "it" without it sounding weird. So Crona's gender has never actually been said. BUT in English calling someone an 'it' is rude and weird. So the english dub simply called Crona "he" for simplicity (the manga translators for english refer to Crona as "she").

    The author of the manga purposely left Crona's gender ambiguous. That's actually easier to do in japanese since they have neutral pronouns, whereas in english we are forced to choose between either 'he' or 'she'. The translation of the manga I read referred to Crona as a girl, and so did most of the subs I watched for the anime. I don't think it really matters anyway, because Crona doesn't act any more like one than the other, so everyone can just take their pick depending on what they prefer (me, girl, simply because I've gotten used to it). You can consider the 'English Dub Crona' a boy, since they decided to use male pronouns.

  • @genderqueercam

And when he doesn't wear the dress anymore he switches to a boys uniform. Even if the gender is supposed to be ambiguous in the Japanese translation, I think that's what makes sthe most sense. The intent from the author was to show that Crona has no sense of self because of Medusa.

      Contrary to popular belief, The idea in which "Crona is a male in the anime but female in the manga." is false. Both official translations from Funimation and Yen Press use male pronouns and noted to not be the sex of the character. In the English dub of the anime, male pronouns are used to refer to Crona, but this does not mean Crona is male. Funimation admitted that they had to settle with this rule because they felt that "it" would have been insulting to Crona as a character. The same rule applies to the Yen Press translation of the manga. Atsushi Okubo stated himself that Crona's sex is unknown.

    the only problem is that English doesn't really have gernder-neutral pronouns, so it's easier to call refer to Crona as "he" (in the original Japanese manga, Crona's referred to pretty gender-neutrally...)
    besides, isn't Crona the only one who can say? why would other characters talking about Crona prove anything...
    (and Medusa I guess...but even she calls Crona an "it" because she's a cruel bitch .-.)

      Crona is the 3rd gender of the world. Plus it's very possible that Crona was created as an experiment by Medusa so Crona could have no gender

    thank you. a lot of ppl are mistaking it for a dress. i honestly thought from the beginning that crona was a boy, despite the voice actor and hair. i also thought he had feelings for maka. however, when netflix referred to him as "she" i made this face :O. it's undetermined, but that doesn't matter. i think it's a good think the writer did this. firstly, it's a good business strategy. also, it makes a point about gender and sexuality. i wonder if there are other countries debating on this.

  • @EmiRabbit
    @EmiRabbit 8 лет назад

    I wouldn't quote me on it because I maybe remembering this wrong. But during one of the episode commentaries (that is a bonus feature on the DVDs) it was stated by the English director that Crona doesn't actually have a given gender, however they used "he" and "him" because it would make the translations awkward to avoid gender terminology and that it would be too dehumanising to refer to him as "it" or "they". But once again I wouldn't quote me on it.

    Its the way its translated, in the Japanese he is a girl. But they changed it in translation, cause the original subtitles say she. But they change the dialog to make it make more sense, stuff does not always translate perfectly.

  • @xILoveYouMostx
    @xILoveYouMostx 11 лет назад +1

    There is "he" and "she" in Japan, but in the Japanese original they say something that translates into "that kid" or "that child". For the sake of better sentence flow they revised it to "he" in English.

  • @mimza64
    @mimza64 10 лет назад

    You can't say that "according to the anime its a "he" " just because of the way they refered to Crona in the dubs. It depends on the translators, for example if you watch it with subs most people write a "she" (and in the manga as well) but since the more popular translations write Crona as a "he" they ended up putting it like that in the dubs. Anyway I don't think the author ever specified the gendre (check out the wiki on Soul Eater) so its kinda meaningless to argue about it (like I've seen in some comments).

    In, the manga it says female, as well as the japanese dub. In the funimation english dubs and subs however, it says male. On the wiki it says unknown and in an interview with the creator it was stated to be 'undecided'. So basically, crona's gender can be up to the viewer to distinguish. Kind of like hanji from attack on titan (in the manga at least)

    Id just like to say that nothing is confirmed in the manga, some fan translations use she or he out of preference. Frankly Id say those are bad translations, the author wants it to be unknown so the translators should be conveying that intent

    He is Soul Eater's Puar, if you have ever read dbz you would understand the reference, honestly I'm fine with him just being ambiguous (un know gender) it honestly doesn't matter. It's even better because he/she makes a character anyone can relate to, which is actually quite a great idea from the mangaka (the manga author)
