It's not always positive because the absolute value of 0 is 0 and 0 is neither positive nor negative. So we can't say that it's always positive, but we can say that it is always non-negative, meaning that it can be zero or any positive number.

It's conceptually better to think of absolute value as distance, even though thinking of it as positive is computationally simpler. But it makes understanding things harder eventually. I wouldn't recommend thinking of/teaching it in this way.

" the distance of any number from zero" is so confusing. yeah now it means that the number will always be positive, but why is it always positive with this symbol? what does "the distance of any number from zero " mean exactly? wouldn't any number, positive or negative be distant from zero? or by that sentence it is talking about any POSITIVE number from zero? see that just makes more sense. well, Idk.
