People have to understand that jumping over a person doesn't mean you jump whatever height the person is, because the vertical is measured from the tip of your toes down to the ground, and not from your groin to the ground. So if you jump over someone who is 6 foot tall, you're not jumping 72 inches from the ground, you're jumping maybe 40 + the "clearance" of your in between the legs.
@EGarrett01 Jordan's 48 is everywhere, but the first to come up is on vertcoach, but it's common knowledge. Another player named Darrel Griffith also had a recorded standing vertical leap of 48 inches, all you have to do is type his name and vertical leap and 48 is the same number that shows up everywhere.
@blacktee31 Ok so by your logic, when you jump to reach something you jump with both your hands in the air to try and hit it? With one hand you can extend that shoulder, try it with two you can't. Put both your arms in the air, you won't get anywhere as near as if you put just one and extended. And you're saying height makes it easier to get off the ground? As you get taller you get heavier, obviously. Therefore it takes more energy to get your body in the air.
@1ambience1 Finishing with two hands isn't harder than finishing with one. The ball his held in place when you have both hands on it which lessens your chances of missing the dunk, with one hand the ball is free and could slip out of your grip when you slam it. and take note that Griffin didn't have to clear the car in order to make the dunk he just had to make it over the top part and then add the fact that he's 6'10 and doesnt have to jump as hard to get his hands at the rim.
@blacktee31 I'm talking about an objective source, not a bunch of he-said she-said. Vince Carter's measurement is from the official stats of the NBA Draft combine.
@blacktee31 If you're dunking with one hand, you can extend your body, with two hands you can't as much. When you can hold a basketball like a bloody tennis ball, you don't have to worry about it slipping out. And when you're that tall, it is much harder to get off the ground and reach those heights, watch griffin this season, you can't deny they he's a high flyer.
Not sure if this was already asked but what about Kadour Ziani with a reported world record of 60" or Michael "Wild Thing" Wilson with a 55" vertical leap? Just wondering if Sports Science tried to contact them. That would be an awesome show
@1ambience1 Nope, I dont. You said it's easier to dunk with one hand because he can palm the ball, but if you can palm the ball you can catch it and palm it. So if we follow the same logic as you went by earlier it is easier to catch the ball with one hand too because you can palm a ball and catch it at the same time.
@1ambience1 Because you were comparing reaching when jumping straight up to reaching when getting a running start and then jumping. I'm talking about both hands for grip, not both hands for reaching. He was leaning forward not back ward, had he tried to reach forward with one hand he would've missed for sure. Lol so what you're saying is people who can palm the ball with one hand dont miss uncontested dunks (Jordan has done that more than once). The judges said the same thing.
@1ambience1 And as you get taller your reach is longer and you're closer to the basket, I never said Blake didn't have hops, but being able to jump in the air and catch a ball isn't impessive.Kareem could've done that dunk and he's taller so by your logic Karreem should've been in the dunk contest, because I've seen him go out for passes like that to too.
The highest max vertical measured listed on DraftExpress's combine archives was Kenny Gregory in the 2001 NBA Draft camp...who got up 45.5 inches with a run-up. The second highest is 43.5, which belongs to Nate Robinson and another guy. 50-inch vertical leap claims are usually total bullshit...and Skywalker can jump but he obviously didn't get up anywhere near 50-inches at any time in this video.
@1ambience1 Gerald Green jumped over a table and got the same exact votes so what's your point? The final dunk almost always gets a 50 unless it's to break a tie in points.
@EGarrett01 Michael Jordan had a 48 inch vertical. I don't know how you say he didn't get anywhere near fifty inches, when they showed his straight up vertical leap and then showed him travel 11 feet st8 up and 11 feet across, which takes every inch of his vertical leap to do.
At my high school there was a wall that measured my reach. It was 8'1 then I jumped up and touched 11 feet. Doing the math I have a 35 inch leap. Not vertical but overall leap.
@EGarrett01 Vertcoach has it. But again it's common knowlege, it really dosen't matter where you look it all says the same thing. It would be different if it was like Spudd Webb where some sites say he has a 42 inch vertical and some say he has 44 and others say 46, it hasn't been recorded. Both Jordan and Giffith have been recorded.
@austenwhitcher1 haha defintley yes leonall marshall has 50 inch vertical jump from standing!! this guy is the best jumper of basketball and he has 50 inch with running
great but how do you do it? just mark inches on a wall, accurately. then jump and subtract your heaight to the number of inches you jumped.. and you got your vertical????
@1ambience1 I guess my original reply didnt post It's not an assumption "when you jump to reach something you jump with both your hands in the air to try and hit it?" Generally when people jump to reach something they are jumping straight up, that's what it sounded like you were talking about in that quote. And you're the one who brought it up by saying finishing with two hands is harder than with one, not me. I just responded because 1 it's false and 2 you tried to imply BG's was better.
nobody has a higher vertical than Earl "The Goat" and i think Troy Mccray from Flying101 has a higher vertical then tdub..i think...is there a video out there that measures tdub's vertical?
Ok for the people that can't dunk yet but want to and missed it. Here is the secret to dunking build and strengthen your lower back, gluts, quads, and calves. That's what the scientific data showed. Off to the gym :)
@blacktee31 Vertcoach claims Jason Richardson's vert was measured at 46" when it was actually 39.5, and it claims Carmelo Anthony was measured at 41" when it was actually measured at 33.5. In other words, Vertcoach is not a credible source.
@EGarrett01 That doesn't mean it's wrong. Why don't you look somewhere else, or check the guinness book of world records. Giffith's vertical leap is in there as 1.2 meters.
Not trying to take anything away from Chris. But he should be looking at the rim like Gerald Green does. Well Gerald actually looks down into but yea. 6'3 + 4'2=10'5. His head was about leveled with the rim. He has more like a 45. So if that's the case then T-Dub got a 57 inch leap.
Does this mean his head is 50inches higher off the ground than at standing? Because he doesn't look like he's jumping higher than a lot of people. His head is no where near the ring?
@blacktee31 Where in the world did you get a standing jump is better than a running jump? And obviously if you have more grip on the ball, it lowers the chances of it slipping out. But that aspect doesn't matter when you're going for uncontested dunks ( Dunk contest dunks). And I'm sure these judges know what they're doing, hence why they're up there and not you.
@1ambience1 Reggie Miller was the only one who was impressed and he knows less about dunking than they do because 1. he didn't dunk much and 2. Kenny actually competed in a dunk contest, and Chuck is always there for them. Lol so I would guess me (who can dunk and has seen almost every dunk contest since the '86 contest) is more qualified to judge someone's dunk than a fan who just likes Blake Griffin more than Javale Mcgee.
@1ambience1 Lol by your logic if you jump straight up you'll be able to dunk easier than if you get a running start. When reach (outward not up) you're reaching forward, with both hands your chances of the ball slippng out are less(even when you can palm it it can still slip out, ask Jordan) he doesn't half to worry about missing anybody who knows how to dunk will tell you there's nothing impressive about Griffin's dunk, he just over propped it.
he said that pro athletes have a vert leap of low to mid 40s !!! more like low to mid 30s and then there are the guys like lebron, josh smith, vince who have above 40 jeez not all nba players have crazy verticals!
@Asanj3RSplayer he barely jumped OVER THE CAR, he only jumped over a portion of the hood. he's over rated. he only has powerful dunks but no flare, you know? unlike vince carter when he jumps and dunks man...truly amazing. btw thats where the nba got the "where amazing happens" slogan, it was from half man half amazin.
obviously he weights more than shannon but i don't understand how can he have a 50 inch vertical if he doesn't get his head above the rim. shannon brown does, james white also, etc, but this guy is bigger then them and i don´t see him above the rim.
not many athletes hav a 40 in vertical only a handful, probably around 8-10 players in the nba, not even dwight howard has a 40 inch vert, or kobe, or dwade, or lebron.
vert is measured from the spot you touch w/o jumping on your toes to the spot you touch jumping. not from the floor to your knees or your head or back or w/e lik on city slam, on city slam u had to just jump over a bar n dunk but thats not ur vert its pretty damn impressive but its not ur vert its more lik 'how high can you jump over somethng and still dunk'
How can you say that you KNOW that he doesent have a 50 inch vertical leap ?! They just measured it ?? By the way, have a look at Leonel Marshall, i have never seen anything like that.....
@1ambience1 I'm not trolling, just wondering why you would even say something like that. And I didn't ask you a question, what I said was that I dont believe it's more difficult to finish with 2 hands than it is with one. I also think it's silly how you're saying almost implying Griffin's dunk was better just because he used both hands.
this is my lunch teacher now i swear im not lying
Unknown Syndicate really!? That's dope, where at?
who gives a shit man, this guy can FLY
How the fuck can he do that off 2 feet? damn
People have to understand that jumping over a person doesn't mean you jump whatever height the person is, because the vertical is measured from the tip of your toes down to the ground, and not from your groin to the ground. This guy can fly for real, very nice
IT JUST RUN IN DA FAMILY
OMG HE WAS MY GYM TEACHER IN SECOND GRADE
@blacktee31 Ok so by your logic, when you jump to reach something you jump with both your hands in the air to try and hit it? With one hand you can extend that shoulder, try it with two you can't. As you get taller you get heavier, obviously. Therefore it takes more energy to get your body in the air.
lol, it almost looked like he walked on the windshield of the car for a second
very interesting!
@1ambience1 Finishing with two hands isn't harder than finishing with one. The ball his held in place when you have both hands on it which lessens your chances of missing the dunk, with one hand the ball is free and could slip out of your grip when you slam it.

imagine this episode except with vince carters dunk over that 7ft guy in the 2000 olympics
Should have brought in air up there
dude is not very tall tho. so you have to factor that in. he got hops tho you cant deny that
"lets find the highest flyers in sports! basketball and football!" volleyball players jump higher...
@1ambience1 Because you were comparing reaching when jumping straight up to reaching when getting a running start and then jumping. I'm talking about both hands for grip, not both hands for reaching. Lol so what you're saying is people who can palm the ball with one hand dont miss uncontested dunks (Jordan has done that more than once). The judges said the same thing.
yea if can be done with hard work, like extremly hard work, but even with extremley hard work sometimes it's still not enough.
Cool!!!
yeh 5:30 that is around 50, but his standing isnt 50inches like they said before at around 4:05 or so. still astonishing running vert.
Dude got mad hops.
Yup u hit it on the hizzy.

@womendonthaverights that is impressive my man, i had a 30 inch vert at 14 also so i believe you.
@blacktee31
Vince Carter's vertical was officially measured at 43. What's your source on Jordan's?
@EGarrett01 Michael Jordan had a 48 inch vertical. I don't know how you say he didn't get anywhere near fifty inches, when they showed his straight up vertical leap and then showed him travel 11 feet st8 up and 11 feet across, which takes every inch of his vertical leap to do.

@JJAM10001 James White's vertical is a 38.
that car is just as low as the hood of the car griffen jumped over, griffen also finished with two hands (much harder than 1)
@austenwhitcher1 haha defintley yes leonall marshall has 50 inch vertical jump from standing!! this guy is the best jumper of basketball and he has 50 inch with running
great but how do you do it? just mark inches on a wall, accurately. then jump and subtract your heaight to the number of inches you jumped.. and you got your vertical????
I think he go an extra stick on the vertical inch thing
This man should be in the NBA dunk contest instead of Blake Griffin. He can actually jump over a car instead of just the hood.
@1ambience1 I guess my original reply didnt post

thats crazy
lol 4:05 was not a 50inch leap. he barely pushed off the ground. that was like 30 to 35inch
Ok for the people that can't dunk yet but want to and missed it. Here is the secret to dunking build and strengthen your lower back, gluts, quads, and calves. That's what the scientific data showed. Off to the gym :)
@blacktee31
Do you think Vince Carter jumped as high as Jordan did?
ruthless
whoo, Brenkus got hops
@blacktee31

@billysue2 not really, there's a lot of people that can jump well over 45 inches ;)

the vertical is measured by where your hand is able to hit on a vertical leap
If basketball doesn't work for that guy....he could always be a long jumper or high jumper on the track team.
@blacktee31 Where in the world did you get a standing jump is better than a running jump? And obviously if you have more grip on the ball, it lowers the chances of it slipping out. @freedude345 no...chris lowery isn't the first to do it...
shannon brown shouldve been on this, or air up there
he said that pro athletes have a vert leap of low to mid 40s !!! more like low to mid 30s and then there are the guys like lebron, josh smith, vince who have above 40 jeez not all nba players have crazy verticals!
@womendonthaverights thats hella good
Dang is this dude wearing jordans too?
all i know is he looks like hes flying wen he dunks
@Asanj3RSplayer he barely jumped OVER THE CAR, he only jumped over a portion of the hood. he's over rated. he only has powerful dunks but no flare, you know? unlike vince carter when he jumps and dunks man...truly amazing. btw thats where the nba got the "where amazing happens" slogan, it was from half man half amazin.
@Asanj3RSplayer sorry bout my long post btw.
didnt chad johnson jump like 58 inches in this same episode?
obviously he weights more than shannon but i don't understand how can he have a 50 inch vertical if he doesn't get his head above the rim. shannon brown does, james white also, etc, but this guy is bigger then them and i don´t see him above the rim.
For a QB, he isn't bad.
even if its noti'm pretty sure he can jump 50 inches cuz i've watched him do city slam
how about the air up there..... imho he seems to jump more
not many athletes hav a 40 in vertical only a handful, probably around 8-10 players in the nba, not even dwight howard has a 40 inch vert, or kobe, or dwade, or lebron.
I can´t believe it!, that´s 127 cm!!! between his foot and floor !
Dwight superman howard !!
hahaha. insurance!! wahahahahaha!
@blacktee31 ok bro that is your opinion ..
i like them both , but blake is my bro :D
vert is measured from the spot you touch w/o jumping on your toes to the spot you touch jumping. not from the floor to your knees or your head or back or w/e lik on city slam, on city slam u had to just jump over a bar n dunk but thats not ur vert its pretty damn impressive but its not ur vert its more lik 'how high can you jump over somethng and still dunk'
theres nothing really that great about this!
wheres the legit skywalker
leonell marshall, cuban volleyball player
How can you say that you KNOW that he doesent have a 50 inch vertical leap ?!
They just measured it ??
By the way, have a look at Leonel Marshall, i have never seen anything like that.....
best street ball player ever? uh no try hot sizzle!!
@1ambience1 I'm not trolling, just wondering why you would even say something like that. I also think it's silly how you're saying almost implying Griffin's dunk was better just because he used both hands.
Anyone else think he looks like Kobe a little?
Yea
@billysue2 well no1 really cares about standing vert tbh, and i mean it's obvious that he hasn't jumped anywhere near 50 inches on the vertec
