Despite running fast, how is it a clause, sir?

You know a clause is nothing but a part of the sentence which consists of both a subject and a verb of its own.
Here, “Despite running fast” has an a subject (implied) and a verb.
Its implied subject is mentioned in the second part of the sentence.
Despite running fast = Though he ran fast
Hence, “Despite running fast” is clearly a clause.
