Thank you for including La Pucelle Tactics in your list, but I have to make a correction. La Pucelle is a prequel sort of for Disgaea 1. You play as the maiden of light hunting demons, instead of demons killing demons. I mean, you can go down into the Netherworld and become an Overlord for god's sake! Not to mention the RosenQueen shop, item mechanics, the fact that this was released a year before Disgaea 1, and you can see it was the granddaddy of this series. Nobody ever even MENTIONS that game at all in their videos, which is very sad. La Pucelle is my fave, and then probably Disgaea 2 (psp version) and then 4. Great video man!
My favourite is la Pucelle tactics, the original that inspired disgaea. I also liked Makai kingdom and disgaea 1&2. Soul nomad sounds interesting perhaps I will pick that up
To me, what made Disgaea 1 harder than 2, was the fact that in 2, healer's gained XP by healing whereas in 1 they only gained XP by kills like everybody else.
did you play d4 on ps3, psvita, or pc/ps4/switch? Because they're different. I watched a longplay of the first and most recent versions side by side and the newest version is zoomed up, which cuts out the full camera view from the original. So I just want to know if you enjoy the latest version of D4. Honestly, I played Disgaea 2 on the ps2 and the psVita(psp version). I was wondering if I should get it for the PC/Steam, because that was pretty much my favorite or first Disgaea game and I have a lot of good memories of it.

sad to know you didn't like Disgaea 1 the most, cos it actually feels the MOST Disgaea-ish like the whole halloweeny aesthetic, the music, the characters, the units, the story which was really really nice (especially when the game knew when to be funny and when to be serious), it just felt very sincere unlike all the future games which became too cutesy and fanservicey but glad to know you loved soul cradle (the original JP name of soul nomad) i agree the whole room system was very strange but once you get used to it, you're able to focus on the story more, and you find out it's a really really good story
I adore Disgaea 2. It’s funny because I played the original and prefer the characters and story, but gameplay wise Disgaea 2 has never been replicated for me. I just loved the diversity of classes in the party of main characters and have really fond memories of utilizing every character in a way I never did in the first, and never did with any game that came after it. My dark horse mvp was Taro who I never would have expected to be such a powerhouse lol. He would out-counter just about any enemy and his milk drinking recovery moves were such a life saver. I NEED NIS to announce Disgaea 2 complete for the switch. I want HD sprites, I want it to be polished and ported.
Disgaea 2 is for me the only S tier in the list for the main line series. I think Disgaea 2 was just a masterpiece and actually what most people played to be into Disgaea. Also don't forget, Disgaea 2 had the adell story and a whole new other story with Axel as the main character.
So great to see La Pucelle get recognition! It came out when I was a teen and I was in love! I agree the Dark Portals are hard to understand but eventually you can get a hang of them and do craaaazy long ones. I personally would have ranked it an A instead based on how great the story, music, and characters (Prier is just the best!) are and of course the battle system is really fun...just the Dark Portals can be a tedious challenge. Noticed someone else mention Rhapsody, another game I love! Unfortunately, I don't think the battle system is particularly memorable or at all good, but the story, characters, and of course MUSIC is great! If only they had done something better with the puppet system, and made the maps less copy paste it could have been a bigger success. Back then it was hard to find good games with female protags so they hold a special place in my heart.
We all know disgaea 2 was the most greatest game off all disgaea since it has the story the plot the endings .. which is great . Introduction of LoC additional content.. Final Final Battle with Pringer X
In D1 grinding gets super easy and fun later on in the game. There was one level where all the enemies were clumped up and the level modifier gave huge xp boosts. With proper chars you could wipe the screen in one turn and power level really easily.
Hey Erick, great list! I have to say that I agree about Soul Nomad having a great battle system, but I disagree about what you said about the rooms. My mans! I completely agree with you on the main series! D4 is my favorite (came close to getting Platinum) and while D5 had great gameplay improvements, the drop in the quality of story is real. Same for DD2 really but I played thru the campaign and uninstalled right after. I won't be playing D6 because I dont have a switch, but after watching the gameplay demonstration and the 3D models...im a little worried 😟
Disgaea 1 was the first game that I played and even though I liked it, I never beat it. However, when I got to second one, Disgaea 2, it just kinda sit with me and couldn't out it down until I finished it. Adell and Rozalin are my favorite couple! To this day it's my favorite Disgaea game and the Sinful Rose intro is my favorite one! Have yet to play the fifth one and I heard it's good.
Disgaea 2 and 4 remain my favorites. That said I haven't played 5 yet... I've been slacking. I really dislike Mao's character in 3 but the mechanics were interesting and set up 4, D2, and from what I understand also things in 5. So that's pretty nice.
I really like the original Disgaea the best. Story in my opinion is the best it has the best characters too in my opinion. Although the new systems on the later games make the series go a bit further. I'm looking forward to 6 since it has a ton of firsts!!
They are all great. I liked the feeling of Makai Kingdom and Phantom Brave. Nippon Ichi is the only company I will pre-order(and box sets) from out of respect for Disgaea.
Soul Nomad and the World Eater is my favorite of them all , Phantom Brave and Disgaea 2 come 2nd , i didnt play Disgaea 4 and 5 , La pucelle was fun i like Priere. i was thinking if the game ' the guided fate paradox' should be included in the series ? there is laharl, asagi and a few others in the ex dungeon
Disgaea 1 has my favorite cast of characters by far. Every game where I don't see Gordon, Jennifer, or Thursday is a tiny bit more of a disappointment than the last.
Hmmm I don't 3 is C because u can use combine skills. I mean that was new, and it was when the Chara world was introduced so I don't think it would be C, I would Be an A too cause I my opinion some of the best DLCs are there, Like Revya from Soul Nomad, there's Hanako and Taro and Yukimaru. So yeah I would give and A for Disgaea 3 because it has some new content even though it has the same style of grafics and everything. About D2 well it is kinda official and Spin off too. The D2 is from Dimension 2 which means it is another Dimension of Disgaea 1. If u compare to the mangá they just changed Flonne that has a sister who is an angel and made it into Laharl's so.... Hmmm it is difficult to say it is totaly an official story. I like it... but it really seems like a new world. Cause Disgaea 2 is a sequence to Disgaea 1, since Etna appears. If u compare, well if D2 were a sequal to the story of 1 then it would have Hanako training with Etna.... so No it is another dimension that follows the the story of 1 but it is not the true story.
I agree about Disgaea 3 its very underrated it also got so many cool unique stuff like the clubs and the Near Death-Skill which they activate when you are about to die and it feels like a limit break super cool and the animation change too. Also Mr Champloo is underrated the dude is hilarious
My rank would be: 1. D5 - For some reason when I played it, everything clicked for me and I really enjoyed the story and characters. The silly story really had an impact on me. Playing it again to get ready for D6 :) 2. D4 - Was a great ride and I would spend 100s of hours leveling up items for no reason 3. D3 - Meh storywise but was a fun ride 4. D2 - My psp broke and I did not finish the story :( and bought the Vita to play Disgaea 3 5. D1 - My psp broke and I did not finish the story :( and bought the Vita to play Disgaea 3
Only games I've played from these are Disgaea 1 (beat but currently playing a new file), 2 (beat but currently playing), 3, 4 (currently playing, Makai Kingdom (beat), Phantom Brave (currently playing) and La Pucelle Tactics (currently playing).
Why didn't you put ZHP on the list? It's a bit more simulator than some of the spin-offs on the list but thank you because I haven't heard of 3 of theses games. Keep up the great work. I always look forward to what's new and old on your channel!!!
You dropped this right when I decided to finally go through the post game in Disgaea 1. Nice list. I agree about the characters in 5, but I think it had the best gameplay. 1 and 4 are kinda tied for best in the story/character department, though, so I can never really decide on a personal favorite. They've each got something going for them.
I'd agree but I put 1 over 4 almost entirely because for some reason fenrich's voice has almost a nail on chalkboard effect on me for some of it. most of his story dialog is thankfully either ok or brief but almost all his battle sounds kill me.
I'd personally put the first game in S or A tier, literally just because I appreciate the fact that it actually had a good story, and good characters. I went to play Disgaea 2 after finally defeating Baal in 1 and I was super disappointed by how boring the story was, and non of the endings were very good. I *started* 3, but never got more than a third of the way through the story because the entire plot was literally "Dad destroyed my video games :(" Like, I don't fucking care dude. lmao. I sympathize, as a fellow gamer, but you can't make a good story out of that, wtf. I understand the main appeal is the grind and post-game, but without a good story, the earlier titles have no replayability. If all you're after is post game and grind, you might as well just jump to 5.
Surprised you couldn't beat the final boss of D4, I managed without any real grinding after noticing he gets a 10% stat buff per ally he has on the map
When you say finished, do you mean the story or do you mean the post game content? The story isn't that hard, but the post game content is really crazy.
Loving Disgaea 2. So far only played 1 up to main story, don't remember doing much post game. For 2 I'm still grinding my ass off to beat LoC Prinny Baal. I already started La Pucelle tactics and damn if it's slow. Will keep playing it more later, so far it's just cathartic meeting that one cameo character in her own game.
Thanks for sharing, Erick! I have only played the first two games in the Disgaea series but I love both and I look forward to eventually playing Disgaea 5 Complete for the Switch (it's in my queue presently). My brother felt the same way you do about 3. Said it just didn't have the same feel as the first two games.
Disagea are easy the moment you can get into item world, you can grind experience ultrafast in there. Bonus after stage are super good, and you only need to do the square piramid puzzles to get it
My list of the main games... D4 (favorite overall cast in the series, the interactions between all of the main characters are gold) D5 (solid upgrade to the PS4, great mechanics, only the mostly uninteresting cast holds it back) D1 (the one that started it all, the big 3 are great characters, tho the supporting cast isn't as strong as 4. Some hiccups in game mechanics - understandable as it was the fist in the series) D2 (Adell and Rozy are great pro-tags, the supporting cast alas is probably the weakest in the series. Did clear up some of the gameplay issues with the first game) Disgaea: Dimension 2 (meh story, tho Sicily is a nice addition to the cast) D3 (good mechanics and solid supporting cast can't hide the fact that Mao is hands down the worst pro-tag in the series) Haven't play Soul Nomad, but really enjoyed Phantom Brave and La Purcell. Would probably put those two between D1 and D2 on my list.
phantom braver you control necromancer that calls ghosts to posses objects on the field. simple. zhp unlosing ranger is very dishaea like. it even has prinnies.
Disgaea 1, 4, and Soul Nomad are my favorite. D2 was a let down, considering 1 is one of my favorites. I did enjoy Makai Kingdom, more so than Phantom Brave, tons of endings in Makai. La Pucelle came out before Disgaea which is why I think the battle system isn't as good.
I need to make my way through more NIS games. The original D1 was good, though later versions add some critical QOL features like animation skipping. D2 I enjoyed way more. The characters and plot connected way better for me. D3 I didn't play much, but I agree that something just feels off. La Pucelle was interesting, but felt much slower than Disgaea. Also unfortunate that the original western release apparently didn't have NG+. I didn't beat this one either. But I'm really looking forward to finally getting the Ragnarok version. Phantom Brave I need to give another chance. But I don't care for the main characters, and the gameplay didn't do much for me either. The first Prinny game was brutally hard. I made it to the last boss but was unable to beat him. And that's it. I own most of the franchise, but have not made the time to play it yet.
Disgaea 2 is the first one I played. Since then I've played 1-4. I say it's 4, 2, 1 and 3. I don't like the environment in 3 Now starting to play 6 instead of d2 and 5. Very curious because of the 3D changes
I always took La Pucelle Tactics being rather in the same universe as Rhapsody and Little Princess RPG, but I fully ignore if it is really located in one or another universe
I honestly think thai evaluate Disgaea games without playing post games where all the mechanics of the game start to shine, is a little bit wrong. Like i agree with the statement of Disgaea 3 about the setting and the plot but gameplay wise between the first 2 chapter and the third one is such a big jump in quality. In fact D5 is pretty "meh" story wise but all the new stuff that helps to speed up the grinding are too much to not evaluate the game more.
Thank you for your review, I've only play on portable so far, so I've played them on ds, psp, ps vita, and switch. D1 is still my favorite disgaea, mainly for the over the top, yet heartfelt story, I also love etna mode. My ranking would be: D1, D4, D2 (I LOVED the side characters story, but not really into love story of the main characters), D3 (probably the weakest story wise yet the funny, I had so many fun with it, the story is like D1, very over the top, but Mao is just not as memorable as laharl). D5 - not play it yet, I have it on PC because of steam summer sale, but I don't know, the story intro just didn't clicked, maybe if they discount it on swicth, I'll buy it again and giving it second chance. I really hope they make a switch (or switch successor) version of Disgaea D2, it would be cool and definitely an instant buy for me, since I really like D1 story.
Have you played guided fate paradox/awakened fate ultimatum? Since soul nomad is here i think they'd technically count them involving celestia, having prinnies in and disgaea characters as ex bosses.
Most of the games stand alone. So 5 is a perfectly fine place to start. 1 and 2 are slightly connected, and D2 is a direct sequel to 1, but other than that, the stories don't connect. Mechanical growth between the games is what might throw you off more than the story.
This is blatant ZHP: Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman erasure, and I won’t stand for it (Not actually upset haha, and am actually happy to discover other games I haven’t heard of before! Thanks for the great video!)
That is a rogue like. The spin offs only are here because they are directly related to Disgaea, and the other games are SRPGs made by the same company both before(La Pucelle) and in between Disgaea releases.
Disgaea 1 was no doubt the hardest because is it the very first game and the game mechanics are still not polished, the later game have their game mechanic built up from the previous generation so it gets easier and easier.
I was just thinking about the series prior to coming across this video.. Seems like it’s perfect for Halloween well other than Soul Sacrifice Delta.. I gather to get the most out of these you really have to put some serious time into them.. Unfortunately tho I was never able to get too far into the first one with the grinding involved not to mention the weird play system.. Thankfully I do own several of them including a couple of the spinoffs.. Disgaea is definitely on my list for that rainy day.. Or should I say dark afternoon..
I’ve played 1,2,4 and 5 and after 1 I barely watch the story. Doesn’t really interest me. End game is where it’s at and in 5 ( which I have on PS4, PC and Switch) I whizz through the story. I can get to end game in about nine hours in 5, and that’s where the game starts. I don’t use the supplied characters at all. I also try not to over-use the Sage or Brawler as, once you know how they work are super OP. I never finished Disgaea 2. But story? Nope, not interested.
My personal opinion on the main games is that Disgaea 4 is my least favorite, and that's because of all the mechanics that were removed and the hyper over focus on geo panel and geo cube puzzles. It just kills the pace completely when I have to play several maps back to back that are slow annoying series of tossing cubes in just the right way rather than SRPG battles.
Coming from Disgaea 2: D2 felt like a step down in a lot of aspects, no dark world, no transform...I really was disappointed. Curious if I should try the 5 before the 6, that weird red bar with an R intrigue me...
that weird red bar with an R is really just (another xD) little mechanic in the game...it's not that important and easy to understand if you play the game
I think I am one of the only people who think 3 is actually the best Disgaea game. 4 should have been, but the ending felt really anti-climactic (unlike Erick, I breezed through the ending and felt the story really dropped off - also I was hoping for more from Fenric in the end and his story kinda just went nowhere). I haven't finished 5 yet as the characters aren't resonating with me and the plot just seems to be going nowhere and so it feels really like a slog (also I feel like they are at the point of actually over-stuffing the game with too many systems - 3 and 4 I felt had the best balance of systems). I quite enjoyed 2 but it was a bit more straightforward than 3. I don't know, I guess I just didn't hate Mao like everyone else seems to?. All this being said though, I feel bad that I haven't finished Hour of Darkness and so haven't played any D2 (as I feel like I should finish 1 before playing D2).
So, to sum it up, all of them are unbalanced & grind heavy? Was looking to try this franchise, but now I'm not so sure. Seems like you complained about every game before giving it a high rating.
Awsome to see people showing intrest in these games. Although I feel like not playing entirely through the games invalidates a lot of your points. You completly skiped over any endgame of the main series games. Investing any time into the endgame completly changes how you veiw them.
I absolutely love the mechanics in D5, I think they nailed it in all aspects. I do miss the male Archer class though, which hasn't existed since the third game. I agree as well, the 4th game has the best story line, mostly because of Desco though. Despite being incredibly excited for it, I am little worried about D6, the graphics I have seen on trailers look terrible and the main character looks to be possibly worse than Mao.
There's a easy way to power level in all these games bro! First throw enemies into each other and they will become 1 and their levels will be added together. Meaning a lvl 10 thrown into a lvl 13 becomes a lvl 23 monster. Killing those monsters are worth major exp and mana. Do that on levels with exp plus geo panels and you'll level in no time!
Love your comments. "It's the journey that matters." 👍
Amen! That same philosophy could certainly be applied to life, right? :)
I think my ranking for the main titles in the series would look something like this:

Even though technically disgaea is a spin off of that since Rhapsody came first.

The DS port was the most zany. They added a bunch of weird stuff.
My favourite is la Pucelle tactics, the original that inspired disgaea. I also liked Makai kingdom and disgaea 1&2.

Guided Fate Paradox is a rogue like, like its spiritual predecessor, Zettai Hero Project and GFP’s sequel, The Awakened Fate Ultimatum.
Overall I largely agree, except I really enjoyed Makai Kingdom. I think it was the first one of the series I played.
My rank would be:
1. D5 - For some reason when I played it, everything clicked for me and I really enjoyed the story and characters. The silly story really had an impact on me. Playing it again to get ready for D6 :)
2. D4 - Was a great ride and I would spend 100s of hours leveling up items for no reason
3. D3 - Meh storywise but was a fun ride
4. D2 - My psp broke and I did not finish the story :( and bought the Vita to play Disgaea 3
5. D1 - My psp broke and I did not finish the story :( and bought the Vita to play Disgaea 3
just as i finally turn off notifications for ur channel, i look up one topic and u show up at top. alrighty then
Only one thing comes to mind when I see people talking about NIS............. is Unlosing Ranger the most obscured Rpg?
Only games I've played from these are Disgaea 1 (beat but currently playing a new file), 2 (beat but currently playing), 3, 4 (currently playing, Makai Kingdom (beat), Phantom Brave (currently playing) and La Pucelle Tactics (currently playing).
Great list, I think that specially Phantom Brave and Soul Nomad are very very underrated games.
Why didn't you put ZHP on the list? It's a bit more simulator than some of the spin-offs on the list but thank you because I haven't heard of 3 of theses games. Keep up the great work. I always look forward to what's new and old on your channel!!!
It’s a rogue like.
These are all standard SRPGs(with the exception of the Disgaea spin-offs)
I hope more of these are coming to switch. No other consoles will replace my switch for the next 5 years. I just love it to death
Phantom Brave has the strongest story out of all the NIS games. Its gameplay is unique and different than a lot of these games.
Soul nomad is my favorite! Master piece even.
the Prinny games, or what I like to call them 'Ghosts 'n Prinny' lol
I would have raised Phantom Brave a rank, but otherwise I agree with you.
Priere had so much personality, I'm baffled how she is presented in D2. I read her with a robot voice just for how boring her dialogue was.
Who gives a damn what you think, from now on, your name is Mid-boss!!!!!
Disagea are easy the moment you can get into item world, you can grind experience ultrafast in there. Bonus after stage are super good, and you only need to do the square piramid puzzles to get it
My list of the main games...
D4 (favorite overall cast in the series, the interactions between all of the main characters are gold)
D5 (solid upgrade to the PS4, great mechanics, only the mostly uninteresting cast holds it back)
D1 (the one that started it all, the big 3 are great characters, tho the supporting cast isn't as strong as 4. Some hiccups in game mechanics - understandable as it was the fist in the series)
D2 (Adell and Rozy are great pro-tags, the supporting cast alas is probably the weakest in the series. Did clear up some of the gameplay issues with the first game)
Disgaea: Dimension 2 (meh story, tho Sicily is a nice addition to the cast)
D3 (good mechanics and solid supporting cast can't hide the fact that Mao is hands down the worst pro-tag in the series)
Haven't play Soul Nomad, but really enjoyed Phantom Brave and La Purcell. Would probably put those two between D1 and D2 on my list.
I'm stuck at Disgaea 1, I refuse to put this game down till I at least get to Baal lol
phantom braver you control necromancer that calls ghosts to posses objects on the field. simple.
zhp unlosing ranger is very dishaea like. it even has prinnies.
I’ve played all of these, but the print games, soul nomad, and the Visual Novel type one.
I didn’t get a notification for this video. RUclips is being weird
on the disgaea 2 psp version you get dlc those games in play with them
That damned teleporting fuuka
thank you for that list, i'm very curious about your opinions on Disgaea series and NIS
Disgaea 2 is the first one I played. Since then I've played 1-4. I say it's 4, 2, 1 and 3. I don't like the environment in 3
Now starting to play 6 instead of d2 and 5. Very curious because of the 3D changes
great video! my ranking would probably be:
1.D4
2.DD2
3.D6
4.D1
5.D5
6.D2
7.D3
I always took La Pucelle Tactics being rather in the same universe as Rhapsody and Little Princess RPG, but I fully ignore if it is really located in one or another universe
It is. It is set generations later.
Disgaea 3-5, D2, Soul Nomad &the World Eaters, and Makai Kingdoms for me.
Our Uncle Erick Disgaea music too funny. I confirm :)
Was Trinity Universe not a sort of Disgaea spin-off?
Thank you for your review,
I've only play on portable so far, so I've played them on ds, psp, ps vita, and switch.
D1 is still my favorite disgaea, mainly for the over the top, yet heartfelt story, I also love etna mode.
My ranking would be:
D1, D4, D2 (I LOVED the side characters story, but not really into love story of the main characters), D3 (probably the weakest story wise yet the funny, I had so many fun with it, the story is like D1, very over the top, but Mao is just not as memorable as laharl).
YES MATE
I played the 3rd one a few chapters in and lost interest. Glad to know it wasn't only me that was disappointed in it.
I wanna get into this game so do I have to played previous titles first?
Can I start with Disgaea 5 right away?
Most of the games stand alone. So 5 is a perfectly fine place to start. 1 and 2 are slightly connected, and D2 is a direct sequel to 1, but other than that, the stories don't connect. Mechanical growth between the games is what might throw you off more than the story.
This is blatant ZHP: Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman erasure, and I won’t stand for it
(Not actually upset haha, and am actually happy to discover other games I haven’t heard of before!
4 is my all time favorite. 5 comes second. D2 well it's not my favorite but still a good game.
You missed Zettai Hero Project.
I love the first game. Haven’t played the rest but tba
Plot twist the best one isn't even a disgaea.
What about Disgaea 1 complete for the PS4 it came out in 2018 I didn't see it on the list?
That is just Disgaea 1.
Man you say jazz a lot, just like Bill O'Reilly.
OMG i love Makai Kingdom
I always included ZHP with the Disgaea "Brothers and Sisters".
It seems to take place in the same universe as Disgaea.
D5,D4,D2,D1,D3
looool , but Makai kingdom have the best story doood!!!!
Not only that, but vehicles, buildings, sci-fi classes and weapons like gatling guns. Totally loved it back then.
@@stinky_nut_blast Yeah I guess Makai Kingdom is by far the Best in the serie
So, to sum it up, all of them are unbalanced & grind heavy? Was looking to try this franchise, but now I'm not so sure. Seems like you complained about every game before giving it a high rating.
1°) Disgaea 4, mejor personaje Mao!! NO he jugado Sould NOmand pero lo jugaré!!
D4 > D5
Awsome to see people showing intrest in these games. Although I feel like not playing entirely through the games invalidates a lot of your points. You completly skiped over any endgame of the main series games. Investing any time into the endgame completly changes how you veiw them.
I absolutely love the mechanics in D5, I think they nailed it in all aspects. I do miss the male Archer class though, which hasn't existed since the third game. I agree as well, the 4th game has the best story line, mostly because of Desco though. Despite being incredibly excited for it, I am little worried about D6, the graphics I have seen on trailers look terrible and the main character looks to be possibly worse than Mao.
yeah Disgaea 6 seems very Disgaea 3ish... Should be good though gameplay wise (hopefully :) )
You are very alike with Nick in New girl series lol
Isn't pucelle iin disgaea as a super boss?
Priere’s demon lord form is, yes.
Her regular form is also in Disgaea D2 along with Eclair’s regular form as DLC.
Wait you didn't give any of them an S tier lmao.
Cannot wait Erick to waste some salt on Prinny games. LUL
Oh, being objective... BOooooOoOooring! :D
P.S: Good job on the tier list!
