85 years ago, a book called "The Hobbit" was published. It was a children's novel written by a philologist named J. R. R. Tolkien. And In addition to a race of short, hairy-footed hobbits living in a completely fictional universe known as "Middle Earth", it was filled with elves, dwarves, wizards and many more colorful characters. Now that this novel was very popular, Tolkien began to write the continuation of the story, and another three-book series was published in 1954-55 with the title "Lord of the Rings". Now you see it here as a single volume. Because it's not actually three separate stories, it's one epic fantasy. In fact, it is a work that creates such a category and represents it at the highest level. Therefore, after 1968, it was published in a single volume, usually combined like this. As a matter of fact, it was like this in Turkey before. Since then, it has been one of the most loved and best-selling novels and books in the world, although it is not easy to calculate because it has been published in such different formats. Although I heard a lot about it during my university years, I couldn't read it all until it was translated into Turkish for the first time in the late 90's. This is one of the first editions. But after reading it, it impressed me so much that I started reading everything that Tolkien wrote and compiled by his son after his death, based on his notes. All... Let's say almost all of them. Then I heard that someone named Peter Jackson was going to make this novel into a movie. "How dare!" I thought. "Who was he? “With what right he would turn these books into movies?” “It is not possible for these books to be transferred or reflected in such a movie!” Not possible indeed. Then, out of curiosity, I immediately raced to the cinema and watched the trilogy's first film "The Fellowship of the Ring" as soon as it was screened. On the one hand, I try not to like the movie, and on the other hand, I can't help being fascinated by this "Middle-earth" visualized for the first time. My Tolkienologist friends who were right next to me when I got out of the movie, started to compare what they watched rightly with what they read. Asking; "Where is Tom Bombadil?" etc. I also say "yeah right not good at all", but on the other hand, when I'm by myself, some scenes in the movie always come to my mind. On the one hand, I am also thinking about how it is possible to fit a 1000-odd-page novel into three films without discarding or subtracting anything in it, without changing it. Not possible really. I wish there was a full-fledged television series like this. 5 years ago, there was a development that both delighted and worried those who like these works, like me, all over the world, this is news. The news that a television series will be made. It's obvious why it's good news. Who wouldn't want to visit Middle-earth once again. As for why you're worried... The person who bought the rights to the work is Jeff Bezos, who was the richest person in the world at the time. He was going to outsource this to his own company Amazon. Well, well... Of course, at that time, a series such as "Game of Thrones" on HBO, which was their rivals, was raging everywhere. On the other hand, there are "Stranger Things" and many similar series that Netflix is already proud of. Will they sacrifice such an artifact just to avoid being left behind? As a matter of fact, with every news I received about the series in the last 5 years, my level of anxiety continued to increase. At first, they shared only one frame from such a huge series.
Then came the “trailers” and the controversy they created. "Will there be a Black-Elf?" While this is discussed In the West, in addition to this, We were discussing "Is it OK to call a Black person, Black person?" It turns out that we were translating even a sensitivity of a foreign culture into Turkish. I was unaware of it.
Frankly, I already have an increasing level of anxiety about the show. Well, I can say that with these discussions, it officially alienated me from life. I've decided not to look at or watch new "trailers" anymore. However, it was spoken so negatively, it was criticized so much before it even went on the air, that comparisons were made; Inevitably, I was also affected by all these negative opinions, and I watched the first episode alone as soon as it went on air, wearing all my anger and hatred. In this video, I share my views on the first two episodes.
