As an installer, wire terminals like this, and any angled terminals weren’t bad to deal with. You would always prefer mounting the amp on standoffs about 3/4” long. This allowed the wires to be pulled from underneath, and promotes better cooling as air can circulate around every surface.

I'm going to add one more very important note the Pioneer receiver that I purchased as a teenager in the 70s is still in my possession and it is still fully functional. I never had to have anything repaired or rebuilt. At one time I got a hold of a Carver amplifier got it on a deal I could not refuse. 500 watts RMS mono. The Pioneer receiver had these 2 metal posts in the back that when removed I was able to use the Pioneer receiver as the preamp tuner for the Carver very convenient. I never tried JVC although friends of mine did no particular reason I just got hooked on Pioneer I also tried Alpine like I stated at one point I installed a Kenwood unit in my son's car only reason that's what he bought.
Invest in a sansui 9090 db. My father bought that receiver back from Vietnam, and she still rocks today. A lil scratcy when I turn on Dolby, but otherwise fine
I had a really nice JVC head unit back in the early 2k's, I absolutely loved it! I've never seen this amp before though, and wow what a quality amp it is!
I actually had this amp back in 2003, either the regular version without Nikki Sixx, or the predecessor. Either way, it was called KS-AX6700 in Europe. Was running it bridged into 2 ohms on an Audiobahn DVC 4 ohm 12" woofer. It was really loud, really hot, and went in and out of protect on hot days. Never any issues though... solid as a rock!
@@scamchan Asking a 2 x 150W amp to deliver ~800W bridged (dynamically) is brutal, and it's still low impedance and high current at lower volumes. Also, I can't remember the exact price, but I didn't pay much for this amp back in the day.
Never had a JVC product that dissapointed me! LOVE their HARX900 headphones. JVC is apparently top dog with projectors these days. Ever come across anything used from JVC's "digifine" series, car or home, its worth grabbing!
I still have an older JVC Home Stereo unit that I bought when I worked at Best Buy in the early 90's. They made decent stuff back then. I'm honestly not surprised by this performance of this "Old School" type amp. Pretty Cool!!
I really dig the looks of this amp, build quality and board layout. One thing I would do is ditch the fake intake manifold to let the heat dissipate. Overall, it did what it was supposed to. Great video BigD!! 👌
Always a joy seeing good a/b power! Even in the spl builds, a/b doors makes a big difference that I can hear. Who cares about amp efficiency! Thanks for the dyno
Heck yeah big D that amp is cool. Thanks for the 2.67 ohm test, I remember a few manufacturers offering prefab triple sub boxes around this time and I always assumed you needed a special amp to push them. I didn't fully understand box rise and how an amp rated at only 4 ohms mono could reliably push three 8 ohm (or DVC 4ohm) subs. Rare find here for sure
I never had an issue with that terminal type, you drilled straight through the amp rack and all wires went underneath where they couldn't be seen. This also worked with the RCA cables as they were set back on this model
I appreciate the dedication and extra effort you went through to show us the guts of the amp! I'll bet 10-20% of the amps weight is in screws. (Ha!) (That was a joke people, don't take it literally) Despite my love for car audio, that began in the 1980s, this is the first I've seen or heard of this amp or the JVC/Nikki Sixx collaboration. I learn something new every day. Thanks Big D! I'm outta herrrrrrrre!
Not sure why folks in this era would complain about the look. I mean, you have 100,000 dollar vehicles with plastic engine covers that have molded in humps that mimic intake runners that aren't even there. THAT, is a joke.
I had the four channel version of this amp in my Nissan Primera P10 2.0 auto for nearly a decade (Bought it in 2006). I bridged the rear channel to a pioneer 12 inch sub. It was fun until it died, unless it was just a bad fuse, I can't remember.
Extremely cool amp design there I’ve never had the pleasure of seeing one in person really cool look they had there…seen you showing how odd the terminals are placed reminds me of early 2000s designs when everyone wanted the amp mounted on a rack with the wiring “hidden” just showing the very top of the amp….tons of shiny fiberglass subs mounted on various angles etc etc that’s when things became a ton of show more so then go glad to see it performed at it’s rated power +
...I think JVC is now a part of Kenwood?...I had a JVC Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound, component home stereo. It was in a tall , narrow cabinet with glass doors, with a "turntable" , a tuner, an amplifier, and a double cassette deck...hooked up to my stereo VCR (RCA)...the rudimentary "home theatre" system..with Sting and Billy Idol saying "I want my MTV" in stereo...we have come a long way....the speakers were huge cabinets with a 12' woofer, a 5 " mid and a 2" cone tweeter, with an "L pad " to distribute the sound between mid and highs....I think everybody had these systems...they sounded great
I have the same amp, but mine was rebranded for warren g. I also have 2 of the old 10" strobowoofers. they still perform as good as the day i bought them over 20 years ago.
Most amps were made to mount on the sub box to make sure amps will not last a long time so newer models can be sold . I am still using JVC power define with a Sony star type 12 in. sub
Now if you can just get your hands on a Michael Anthony, (bassist for Van Halen) Precision Power tube amp. I bet it's even harder to find than one of these.
When my daughter got her drivers license, I ripped into the dash of my car and replaced all the dash lights with purple lights. Now I know that there's not much difference between purple and pink lighting. Still looks better than the standard white. At least daddy tried, right? It's always nice to see an amp do what they claimed it would do. And my favorite head units back in the day was Kenwood. They knew how to make decent engineering look good. But that was back in the days of under dash graphic equalizers, which we never see anymore. Of course, there mostly no "under" dash to mount them anymore. Not unless you want to hurt someone's knee.
"Rip it, Burn it, and Rock it" really zeroes this in to a very specific few years post Napster but still a long way off from streaming sites/services like soundcloud, youtube, spotify came along to nearly kill the CD off. Reminds me of waiting 20 minutes for a single song to download on Kazaa, getting enough fill a disc and excitedly running out to the ride to annoy the neighborhood. I always bought JVC head units back in the day but never messed with their amps or speakers.
Sweet, you deserve 2 thumbs 👍👍, just for the effort it took to see the guts, I had a similar JVC looked exactly the same but it lit up blue on the top plate🤙
I have this amp, but it isn't the Nikki Sixx version. Worked really well for my 2 12in Pioneer subs back in t he day. Plan on throwing it in my s10 Blazer with one 12
Hey Derek I've got a question, well honestly I'm looking for some good suggestion on someone who works on amps you'd mentioned getting that JVC recapped per say during the vid and I figured I'd ask you lol won't know if you don't ask lol and I figure you would know some good honest legit peeps where I live there's no one fixing amp's or electronics heck if you know anyone that can help with either i would be extremely grateful if not hey that's awesome too and I thank you for your time. P.S. could you point a homeboy in the direction of some deals on older or blown decent to high end amps or subs or just parts motors baskets top or bottom plates etc. singles or bulk I'm not picky and again thanks for reading this and have a great day brother really enjoyed the video also if you can one day dyno one of those old school annihilator amps some of those things were pretty bad @$$ back in the day!
I usually don't like when people collect amps and mount there collections on a wall as I always feel a well made amp deserves to be listened too. But this amp I would mount as a unique piece of art and 12v history. Its just cool.
Shout out to the Chamaleon deck, that was crazy when it debuted, not sure if Kenwood borrowed idea or if they did it before with the D Mask+ decks. Very cool stuff out there, thanks for the entertainment bro ✌️
Literally never seen or even heard of this amp before. It's weird looking, I'll give it that. Looks like JVC put all their best styling into head units. 😛
Certainly interesting, might even say a petty cool looking amp, which I don’t really remember these. Nice to see it put out good power. I don’t believe I’ve ever used any JVC car audio gear.
I’ll also add, not sure I’m totally against those terminals. My current amp rack would allow holes drilled right under them and the wires cleanly poked through, so wouldn’t be a big deal depending on install.
As far i know JVC Amplifiers almost never disappoint. Home Audio Amps had a Very Powerful Pump and also the CarAudio were known sturdy but not the best in High Fidelity.
These type terminals work good when amp is mounted to a board/amp rack with holes drilled for the cables to pass through. Its a good way to hide the wiring. If NOT mounted this way, its a big p.i.t.a.
I still have my jvc doch 4ch amp in my passat wagon. Runs Boston acoustic pro 6lf separates and mids in the back doors. Skar 2000.d or something runs an infinity perfect 10 in a ported box. Ran off a pioneer prs 80 deck
I remember seeing this in a magazine n thinking man that's a bit gimmicky but the power is def there. Cool old-school amp. My 3 yr old watching this with me thinks its a toy he absolutely has to have, and so begins his car audio addiction...
I had their top of the line El Chameleon. I think it was the LX 111, something like that. Loved that cd player! The cd player started malfunctioning. Later I found the lower model. Same thing the cd player malfunctioned. I've been looking for a functioning El Chameleon for some time now.
Cool stuff man keep up the good content. I've always wondered about that clip at the end of your videos "bass waves" just you as a kid playing around or what?
Not bad for something so gimmicky. I know JVC stuff in the past was quality stuff. In 1987 I saved up to but a JVC home audio rack system, it was MSRP of $1800 on sale for $999. I used a sale that was for every $50 spent you got $5 off. So I got $100 off. I had saved from a paper route and mowed a bunch of lawn to get this. I still have it to this day pumping out tunes. Only thing that has gone wrong with it. The tuner back light and power lights burned out. Has never missed a beat in 35 years.
Jvc had good entry level stuff in 2000. I remember the store I worked at was going to start carrying JVC and I expected it to be trash. Their coaxials didn't sound too bad although there was better to be had for similar money.
I remember some of the head units they were making at the time looked really neat. I was expecting them to be junk being JVC, They weren't Alpine or Kenwood but they did step up their game a good bit and offered a ton of features at a lower cost than the big boys.
Good morning sir about start putting my sounds together in my BMW 335 Wagon. I have two T2’s 12 inch subwoofers bridged down to 1 ohm and wanted to know in your opinion what’s the best amplifier for the money for them ? Thanks in advance 🔈
It made rated power and more and looked cool. Slightly collectible. Probably was not junk and someone could have gotten a lot of music from it. Big thumbs up I'm outta herrrrre
I'm surprised it made decent power numbers class ab should sound decent over 800 watts at 2.67 is very nice unregulated power supply must be really well thought out.
In my time i use a jvc headhunit . And Philip Dap amps 6040 serie. Till somboday well thake my amp out of my car by smaching a Window. Later i stap over to magnat amps . I hope you test a Philips Dap amp Its dutch really good amp .
I remember there was a Sony head unit I think it was designated the xr something or other, but what I remember most about it was that it had switching for 2 antennas, I believe they were labeled a+b. Is it possible you can find one of them and do a review on it.
Wow that's crazy I bought this same amplifier from a guy earlier this year for 75bucks from of OfferUp for my wife vehicle it's from early 2000's it's a pretty decent sounding amplifier my wife has no complaints
I'm a rookie when it comes to car audio and have a very very basic it seems to set up in my ride. But being an 80s kid I always crank up Motley Crue and Poison and Skid Row when their songs get played on my local classic rock station. There are quite a few from the 70s that get the full crank up as well one my faves from that decade being Smoke on the Water. As for my set up in the suv I'm rocking a 55x4 Sony head unit factory door speakers and a pair of Rockford Fosgate Prime 10's with a 1500 watt ( and yes I know from watching your vids Big D that the actual output isn't even close) Boss amp. Was I seeing things or did your meter when you did the audio testing say 10,000 ohms?
Yah JVC, was trying to pull in people listening to different music 🎶 genres... I remember the Warren G subwoofers too 🤷 They make decent equipment... just funny where things were then
They seemed to up their game in the early 2000's. I remember a guy selling head units flea market style. I was expecting garbage, but they were actually really good for the price and offered more features than the high end stuff. They went from being low quality components to low cost midrange audio with class leading features.
Am I the only one who thinks the "manifold" is ugly as hell?? Makes the amp look cheesy and cheap. Great video D and proves JVC has always been a good brand, fairly overlooked unfortunately.
As an installer, wire terminals like this, and any angled terminals weren’t bad to deal with. You would always prefer mounting the amp on standoffs about 3/4” long. This allowed the wires to be pulled from underneath, and promotes better cooling as air can circulate around every surface.
even better, on stand outs, over the sub for air cooling at peak
I always prefer angled terminals so the wiring tucks under the amp.
You dont need to cool the bottom of an amp.
@@ah4800 most amps use the whole housing for cooling btw so it's helpful to cool the whole amp
@@Loudkona no they dont, they use heatsinks. Theyre designed to be mounted flat against something.
JVC was a hugely underrated company in car audio. Thanks for highlighting this really unique amp!
And let’s not mention, JVC made most of the assembly pieces for many of the other brands.

@@ah4800 doesn't matter being as it was before you were born... if you must know there were IMPP's
Kameleons are my absolute favorite head units of all time, nothing quite like them
You always find the coolest old school audio stuff!! The good, bad, and ugly 😆👍👍 Thank you D🤗
I have a JVC head unit in my truck with carplay etc, and its the second one I've owned. I love it.
Awesome 👏
I had a really nice JVC head unit back in the early 2k's, I absolutely loved it! I've never seen this amp before though, and wow what a quality amp it is!
Awesome 👏
I still have the strikingly similar Warren G Signature series but haven’t fired it up in many years
Awesome! That one came after these, same amp designs tho
You wouldn't call overheating an issue lol
@@andraealston8478 Not as it as bridged @ 2 ohms... At lower volumes there was no going into protect, of course.
@@audio_facts who goes into protect at low volume??
@@scamchan I'm beginning to understand why Derek limits his involvement in the comment section.
@@scamchan Asking a 2 x 150W amp to deliver ~800W bridged (dynamically) is brutal, and it's still low impedance and high current at lower volumes. Also, I can't remember the exact price, but I didn't pay much for this amp back in the day.
JVC Chameleon head unit really got my attention. Very innovative for the time.
I had 2 of those amps. I loved them. Sounded great and were very reliable
I always love when you go back in time!
Always love the disassemblies. The first thing I do when I get a new (to me) amp is open it up.
(Ha!) (That was a joke people, don't take it literally)
Despite my love for car audio, that began in the 1980s, this is the first I've seen or heard of this amp or the JVC/Nikki Sixx collaboration. I learn something new every day.
Thanks Big D!
I'm outta herrrrrrrre!
👌😬👍
Not sure why folks in this era would complain about the look. I mean, you have 100,000 dollar vehicles with plastic engine covers that have molded in humps that mimic intake runners that aren't even there. THAT, is a joke.
Jesus I’m in a throwback Thursday as I remember seeing this video when it came out!
JVC made some sweet Decks and components in the early 2000s with the small screens.
I’m so happy it wasn’t a Tommy Lee amp .
🤣
A dual overhead cam amplifier?
SWEEEEEEET. NEW SKITS.
YEAHHHHH. BOEEEYYYYYYY
Awesome 👏
Most amps were made to mount on the sub box to make sure amps will not last a long time so newer models can be sold . I am still using JVC power define with a Sony star type 12 in. sub
Now if you can just get your hands on a Michael Anthony, (bassist for Van Halen) Precision Power tube amp. I bet it's even harder to find than one of these.
The set up nikki had in his vehicle was pretty sweet. The cards, great idea.
Agreed!
Thise headunits were the bomb…had three of those kd-sh99r they were pretty high end back then
When my daughter got her drivers license, I ripped into the dash of my car and replaced all the dash lights with purple lights.
Great points!
20 minute download for one song you must be talking about dial-up certainly can't be high speed internet otherwise get your money back
Keep up the good work big d
👌😬👍
Sweet, you deserve 2 thumbs 👍👍, just for the effort it took to see the guts, I had a similar JVC looked exactly the same but it lit up blue on the top plate🤙
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Bro you unlocked a deep memory. I forgot all about this!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Good video as always Brother. I was impressed with output results considering JVC. They weren't necessarily my top 5 Japanese audio companies lol.
I have this amp, but it isn't the Nikki Sixx version. Worked really well for my 2 12in Pioneer subs back in t he day. Plan on throwing it in my s10 Blazer with one 12
I gotta tell ya, I was really impressed with the performance from this amp.
👌😬👍
Hey Derek I've got a question, well honestly I'm looking for some good suggestion on someone who works on amps you'd mentioned getting that JVC recapped per say during the vid and I figured I'd ask you lol won't know if you don't ask lol and I figure you would know some good honest legit peeps where I live there's no one fixing amp's or electronics heck if you know anyone that can help with either i would be extremely grateful if not hey that's awesome too and I thank you for your time.
P.S. could you point a homeboy in the direction of some deals on older or blown decent to high end amps or subs or just parts motors baskets top or bottom plates etc. singles or bulk I'm not picky and again thanks for reading this and have a great day brother really enjoyed the video also if you can one day dyno one of those old school annihilator amps some of those things were pretty bad @$$ back in the day!
it's really interesting to know how the different efficiencies sound, where is the listenable frequencies that are affected by the efficiency ratings
I have one of these still in the box in my Basement along with their Warren G AMP
Awe yeah those were sweet 👌
loved my og kameleon
Kenwood owns JVC
Kenwood Exelon top tier
JVC blue collar budget
both really good for their price point
i hope this thing turns out good . i love jvc
im happy happy happy wit dat
What a cool unicorn type amp! Really appreciate you snagging and testing! A+
If I'm not mistaken, same amp as the Warren G, i had on my components back in the day in my Civic. Was actually pretty good sound quality.
great job doing all that to take the amp apart. looked tedious as hell man so props to you!
I had a head unit from jvc. A KDGS929. A awesome deck.
I never knew JVC did this. Great vid as always!
Awesome 👏
I remember seeing this in a magazine n thinking man that's a bit gimmicky but the power is def there. Cool old-school amp. My 3 yr old watching this with me thinks its a toy he absolutely has to have, and so begins his car audio addiction...
I had their top of the line El Chameleon. I think it was the LX 111, something like that. Loved that cd player! The cd player started malfunctioning. Later I found the lower model. Same thing the cd player malfunctioned. I've been looking for a functioning El Chameleon for some time now.
Bummer!
Cool stuff man keep up the good content. I've always wondered about that clip at the end of your videos "bass waves" just you as a kid playing around or what?
Those digifine radios were top notch
Not bad for something so gimmicky. I know JVC stuff in the past was quality stuff. In 1987 I saved up to but a JVC home audio rack system, it was MSRP of $1800 on sale for $999. I used a sale that was for every $50 spent you got $5 off. So I got $100 off. I had saved from a paper route and mowed a bunch of lawn to get this. I still have it to this day pumping out tunes. Only thing that has gone wrong with it. The tuner back light and power lights burned out. Has never missed a beat in 35 years.
That’s awesome!!
In 2987 sounds like a SI-FI amplifier.
@@leung619 2987, yeah right? My fat fingers.
Nice power for old amp 💯💯💪💪👍👍
👌😬👍
Jvc had good entry level stuff in 2000. I remember the store I worked at was going to start carrying JVC and I expected it to be trash. Their coaxials didn't sound too bad although there was better to be had for similar money.
👌😬👍
I remember some of the head units they were making at the time looked really neat. I was expecting them to be junk being JVC, They weren't Alpine or Kenwood but they did step up their game a good bit and offered a ton of features at a lower cost than the big boys.
I have some Infinity reference amps from about 2006 that I would love to see on the dyno.
Good morning sir about start putting my sounds together in my BMW 335 Wagon.
I have two T2’s 12 inch subwoofers bridged down to 1 ohm and wanted to know in your opinion what’s the best amplifier for the money for them ?
Thanks in advance 🔈
BACK IN 2003-04 I HAD 2 KS-AX6550 AND 2 KS-AX6350 AND 1 KS- AX6750 WISH I STILL HAD THEM
I have this and a BNIB 6550 and both are avail for sale. WillistonAudio (at) gmail
+10 bonus points for the egg shot
+100 bonus points for watching till the end 🤙
It made rated power and more and looked cool. Slightly collectible. Probably was not junk and someone could have gotten a lot of music from it. Big thumbs up I'm outta herrrrre
Great video. Love the short video cuts of people saying crazy stuff! LOL
I still have the 4 channel class A version. Awesome sq and power
I'm surprised it made decent power numbers class ab should sound decent over 800 watts at 2.67 is very nice unregulated power supply must be really well thought out.
Not quite that 900W MAX but we know that’s ILS anyway 🙄
In my time i use a jvc headhunit .
And Philip Dap amps 6040 serie.
Till somboday well thake my amp out of my car by smaching a Window.
Later i stap over to magnat amps .
I hope you test a Philips Dap amp
Its dutch really good amp .
If that amp is putting that much out on the dynamic burst tests, then I highly doubt that there's any issues with the caps.
please protect your ears ..... it was a blast 20 years ago, now fugggg (4 12's directed comp X in a '94 3 door hatchback)
I remember there was a Sony head unit I think it was designated the xr something or other, but what I remember most about it was that it had switching for 2 antennas, I believe they were labeled a+b. Is it possible you can find one of them and do a review on it.
The Best JVC Amps hands down we're the " Arsenal " Series Amps and Subwoofers after that the company went down hill.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Wow that's crazy I bought this same amplifier from a guy earlier this year for 75bucks from of OfferUp for my wife vehicle it's from early 2000's it's a pretty decent sounding amplifier my wife has no complaints
👌😬👍
I remember the Warren G subwoofers too 🤷 They make decent equipment... just funny where things were then
Thanks for the vid I'm looking at one for sale at the moment here we're I'm from for 100 however it's a 4 channel
I prefer JBC. “Just Be Cool.” Lol!
Why unfortunately when it don't make more power at clipping ? A amplifier that's clean all the way to clipping is absolutely amazing !!
Some amps just hit their limit quick
it means that the gap from 1% distortion to clipping is short
@@FSXgta I'm well away of that . I'm saying that's a good thing not a unfortunate thing
Funny you mentioned the crossover at the end. I was wondering if it was labeled wrong since off is usually in the middle
I have always know JVC wasnt a high end brand. But I have always had luck with the JVC brand.
😬👍
They seemed to up their game in the early 2000's. I remember a guy selling head units flea market style. I was expecting garbage, but they were actually really good for the price and offered more features than the high end stuff. They went from being low quality components to low cost midrange audio with class leading features.
Am I the only one who thinks the "manifold" is ugly as hell?? Makes the amp look cheesy and cheap. Great video D and proves JVC has always been a good brand, fairly overlooked unfortunately.
