- Official Dancehall Reggae Sound Clash: David Rodigan VS Downbeat [New York] 2006
Tony Screw, also known as Downbeat the Ruler, has been captivating audiences across the globe since the early 70s. With his unique mix of on-stage presence, exclusive dubplates, and a knack for keeping dance floors packed, he has earned a well-deserved reputation as a musical icon. Downbeat the Ruler Sound, named after Tony Screw's mentor Sir Coxsone Dodd, has introduced countless reggae enthusiasts to the sounds of Studio One - the foundation of Jamaican music.
For those who are unfamiliar with Tony Screw's background, here is a brief bio. New York City, home to a significant Jamaican community, was relatively unknown in the reggae world until the 1980s. The music's shift from roots to dancehall coincided with explosive growth in the city's local reggae scene. This scene was centered around locally-run sound systems, and Downbeat the Ruler (originally called Downbeat International), founded by selector Tony Screw in the seventies, became one of the most enduring. Downbeat quickly became a regional powerhouse that could compete with the strongest sounds from Jamaica.
David Rodigan's reggae broadcasting career began in 1978 on BBC Radio London. He moved to Capital Radio in 1979 and remained there for eleven years, hosting his legendary ‘Roots Rockers’ show every Saturday night. His credibility was solidified when he began clashing with Jamaica’s champion DJ, Barry G, on JBC Radio in Jamaica. Rodigan went on to clash with all the top Jamaican sound systems in the West Indies, the USA, and England. In 2012, he achieved the ultimate clash victory when he won the Champion Trophy at World Clash Reset in New York.
In 1984, Rodigan joined BFBS (British Forces Broadcasting Corp), where he broadcast his weekly reggae show for 25 years until 2009.

Who's here in February 2022 going down memory lane ?
You got to Love the King Rodigan...who is white and but he's love for reggae made him the most black white guy...Jamaicans, Japanese, USA and all over the world ..as he put more effort promoting & money into most of the reggae artists, with he's love for the music Bless
I am loving the diversity of the crowd and as a Black American who has been ridiculed by some Caribbean people because of my love and knowledge of Reggae, this really makes me continue to hold my head up high.
David Rodigan is also another one of my inspirations and favorite examples that you don't have to be of Caribbean descent to love and know Reggae.
Truth!! A mad Englishman who can't skank, but definitely murders sounds in my London and worldwide!!! As Beres said, "you tell me songs, locations and years I don't remember".... Big up yourself, Don Sinclair, and Sir David Rodigan!!! London say so.....
You know most Caribbean people jealous of ja,cans they don't like us but wanna be us what you need is more ja,cans friends it's a big difference between ja,cans

love that gladiators - tribulation, them vocals slew dem
Not sure about the audience, they don't seem to be enjoying themselves. Here in England we would be rocking, no carib spirit here looks like they have all grown up on rock. pop and country music. Love me Rodigan, pure respect. he was sure the Gorgon in this clash.
David Rodigan, the splice dub king: you think him easy. A just because these young youths don't know music; but, when the deejay used to go to England in the 80's (ex. Tenor Saw), Rodigan used to ask them to do a jingle for his radio show. Rodigan would then use the jingle and put the original 45 at the tail end and it becomes a dubplate. Ask Rodigan to play out some of his "dubs" and check if you hear his name being called again? Psychology lol!
And here’s me thinking I’m the only one who knew lol
You are absolutely spot on
he’s tricked and conned his way to some very significant wins as a result 👀👀👀
Big up everyone for nuff respect Rodigan shows when it’s real no one can deny your soul regardless of color

If this dance was in JA or the UK, the crowd would be skanking like wha..? Lighter in the air, horns, whistles, pure crowd interaction. And to think, the US has had many sounds over the years, so you'd think they'll be used to the vibes.
If this junt was in the UK it would be bumping, yanks don't now bout skanking fam
uk? yanks?

Wicked clash
Shank I Shek riddim (Greetings & Murdera) sound sweet Father Downbeat.
No disrespect , the riddim is Heavenless , which Coxsone credited to Don Drummond , but the original is really Vin Gordon on trombone. The track in this video sounds like the Joe Gibbs Heavenless. Bless up
As i the Emperor took a good look and i love the dance clean and rich with foundation sound only the down beat put it down so beat up your chest screw because you are the real daddy so Rodigan check the eyes, nose check the toes because he was dead before him come to clash and what we say BROOKLYN JAMAICA LAND WE LOVE MASSIVE.AS FIONA SAY I AM THE RULER SO RODIGAN PUT THAT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT SCREW WENT TO ENGLAND AND THE REAL DADDY PUT HIM TO BED IN THE REMATCH SO HE IS NO MATCH FOR JAMAICA WE PRODUCE ALOT OF CHAMPIONS SO SILENCE AND ALL JAMAICAN HEAR THIS.

Rodigan took this one, BUT Downbeat mash his ass up inna London!!! For the part 2 in 2008
Phyllis Dillon ONE LIFE TO LIVE is the name of that tune!
Down Beat plays more nostalgic tunes, than the other fellow.
🈲️
I love it
I'll just say it... Downbeat, though nice, simply haven't the dubs to worry Sir David Rodigan, let alone kill. Rodigan murdered him plain and simple!!! Down sat way out of their league, and despite me being from London, that's the honest truth... #facts
People dont know this but DownBeat was in a car accident that night on the way 2 the dance.
Thats bullshit. Downbeat won. You are biased. Rodigan is overrated
Can never stalllllleeeee
Anyone know the tune at 12.57??
What tune at 40.40 ?
Brigadier jerry-pain
some vibes people just come in part 2 at 33 mins.
cool and deadly !!!
📢July 2024 🔥🔥🔥
killer at 8 min !!!
Yes, Rodi is the best to do this. Unlike the other soundman who chat rubbish and profanity for hype. Selectors and mic man should pattern after David Rodigan research the history of the music and let your dubs speak for itself.
So true that , so true.
29:07 GODDDDDD...DAMMMMMMMMMMN ! 🤌🏼💥
