The trend is toward AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). This time is different as these technologies are progressing at an exponential rate not at a linear rate, i.e., 50 years, as this IBM representative is attempting to portray. Cognitive abilities are the last type of skills that people have left to perform paid jobs. First these computer systems will assist some human workers but the next step is advanced cognitive machines replacing human workers. But it doesn't have to be a bad outcome for society as long as we distribute the wealth that the robots will bring.

We have always been expanding at an exponential rate. It's just that the curve of progress has increased enough that most people now days can clearly see the rapid change of technology and industry, because it happens every few years. Smart thinkers from past centuries noticed the exponential progress in their own time, too.
If the wealth from software and robotics isn't distributed very well, everyone in the world will still be far, far better off and richer than the previous generation.

None of Sean Flemmish's pea brain will be used to populate IBM Watson's future cognizant capabilities.
