I started with wheels tires and coilovers on my 08 Civic LX. Next I'm going for cold air intake, exhaust, sway bars, Intake manifold, cams, and throttle bodies for more power, also a tune since it's necessary.
Intake, downpipe, mufflers, gutted cats, header, lowering springs, poly motor mounts, front/rear sway bars, front/rear strut braces, mild weight reduction, wheels/tires, drilled/slotted rotors and brake pads. Don't blow your money on a cat-back since your factory one works fine without forced induction. Been tuning cars for two decades. This is the budget recipe for a well-rounded and fun car. Nothing on this list is super expensive except for wheels if you want lightweight. A simple set of Motegi, Konig, or Enkei would be my pics for bang-for-the-buck. These are in no order but I honestly would do lowering springs and poly mounts first as this will stiffen the car up and allow you to feel the road better. I'd do a tune last when you've decided your done with everything else and you may need to upgrade your fuel and spark accordingly. On most cars, headers are your biggest power gain out of the bolt-on list. Its your money, your car and your choice but this is the knowledge I've gathered thru my 23 years of modding customers' cars for a living. Again this is a budget list for beginners or people without a large expendable income. Happy modding.
I started with an exhaust, intake, front mount intercooler, and LSD on my Jetta 1.8t. Ran me $600 and some fab work for the exhaust and fmic kit (ebay is good if you have the means to repair the defects), and the LSD ran me 1k, including installation. Intake was like $40 for the filter and a spacer pipe to move it closer to fresh air. After that I got some drilled and slotted rotors, solid aluminum shifter bushings, and a splitter valve (kind of like a blow off valve but less cool) and that all ran me $400ish. Removed the rear seats bc I have no friends and wEigHT rEdUCtIoN bRo, and got some Federal 595s ($200). Cranked the wastegate to 14 lbs and sent it. Pretty fun car for less than 5k
Low weight wheels are interesting. The 17x8 RPF1s with 225/45 R17s I run on my Corolla SE manual really made my car feel noticeably more stable over bumps and more agile. Got the K&N typhoon cold air intake and a Borla catback too. Sounds awesome. My car is now a blast to drive...
That sounds like a great setup! The RPF1's are a great lightweight wheel option. I personally feel like lightweight wheels are easily overlooked but once you get some it's hard to go back to heavier wheels. - Sam
Plan ahead, parts aren't easy to find. I have a '98 and its a struggle. I put a Jackson Racing supercharger on it in '08 and I couldn't find another one since. Aftermarket game is still kinda strong if you look in the right places. H22 motors are scarce also.
The Sentra Spec-V is such a cool car that totally flew under the radar. My friends and I were just talking about it at the track this past weekend. - Sam
01 Grand Prix GTP started with a complete stage 2 kit (intake exhaust 180tstat 3.4 pulley dp) then got front an rear power logs, then catback. lowered on zzp springs with niche targa wheels surrounded by bfgoodrich tires. amazing car an the sc whine is orgasmic!
When it comes to mods, Honda has always been the most popular one. you hardly ever see a modified Corolla out there, but a modified Civic can be seen everywhere.
If youre new to modifying cars; specifically suspension modifications. A lot of people dont think too much about the geometry of the car and how the suspension works. Firstly, do some research before slamming your car (It will be super beneficial in the long run). Things like roll center, camber, toe etc. will all change as soon as you adjust that ride height or any suspension component. Not to mention all the things you are going to wear, like your CVs and tyres. Its a chain reaction so do it properly the first time and it will be cheaper and safer in the long run.
The best way is to use one of those covers and also see if there is an intake that routes it as far away from the ground as you can. I know in some older Hondas that's tough though. - Sam
I've got a little tip about that weight point: try finding Fiberglas parts, they're way cheaper and not that much heavier than CF. My first performance mod ever were rear ARB bushings on my Civic EP2, I don't count wheels+ tyres because that's kind of a given at this point lol. Second one was a full suspension (dampers adjustable) + front ARB and control arm bushings and some geometry correction. 2 months later the car was totaled and now I'm kinda back to almost stock on my '05 Fiesta ST 150
Fiberglass is definitely cheaper. You just gotta make sure you buy from a reputable brand or you'll be stuck doing a TON of fitting and sanding to make it fit correctly. I've made that mistake haha. - Sam
Catted downpipes and a intercooler if your boosted those two mods will change a lot without making it look modified… unless u love the massive intercoolers that don’t fit 😂
Ranking from most to least important. 1. Tires 2. Coilover 3. Strut Bar 4. Sway Bar 5. Lightweight and Appropriate-Sized Wheels 6. Lightweight Body Kits (Exterior and Interior) 7. Brakes and Brake Lines 8. Full Sports Exhaust Kit 9. Intercooler 10. Intakes 11. Aluminum Pipes 12. ECU Tuning
I'd say take a look at our Anovia wheels. We have some with literally the PERFECT fitment for that platform and they are lightweight like I mention in the video. For tires, I have really liked GT Radial's Champiro lineup lately. I'd say an intake and exhaust should be next for ya after those mods! - Sam
No hate, but when did we all start referring to engines as “motors?” In the words of my auto tech teacher from days of olde, 2005, “motors are in electronics. Engines are in cars.” Great video!!
Most of these aren't beginner mods at all, because I am literally just getting a turbo and tune and I been building my car for 2 years. takes time to build things right and learn how to do motorsports and track racing, not talking about street because I don't street race for personal reasons. But beginner mods are mainly suspension components and chassis braces to improve handling and reducing flex on the body. Tires and brakes are the very first mod you should always do to any new or used car you get. But suspension is the real deal when you're diving into building a car. I would touch the engine and ECU last because you can notice the difference of the car when you wake up the beast under the hood. Then you can decide if you wanna strip the car based on what you wanna do with it, daily driver or a track car. Imo
Speaking of the order that you should mod your car in. I got a stock miata, did a poor paint job, straight piped it. Then I got sick of the loud noise so I put a turbo on and a 3 inch straight pipe, big brake kit, bc racing gold coilovers, and still stock wheels 😂
That's really only true with some very aggressive track-oriented pads. I have put ceramic pads from PowerStop on my 240SX, IS300, and even my F-150 without any annoying squeaks at all. - Sam
@@FitmentIndustries Thanks for the feedback, Sam. So Ceramic pads are the way to go. would the brake rotors make a difference when it come to noise too, or not really? Btw, I got to meet Gels at the Fuel Fest 2022 here in LA a few weeks ago. Wished you all could've been there too, to meet you all.
@@MKVII_A That's so cool you got to meet Gels! Pads are what will affect the noise the most. If you're changing pads it's a great time to swap rotors as well.
