Joel, the only thing I wish you would have mentioned about Ohio State’s defense analysis is how important the run game is. The offense is playing complimentary to the defense by running the ball better. What this does is allow the defense to catch their breath and play fresher and therefore faster and more consistent. Before this year, they were on the field a lot after short drives because the offense was so explosive. So coach Day is helping coach Knowles defense with his play calling and the improvement along the O-line and running attack. And then yes you are spot on about their structure and scheme under a better defensive coach than we’ve had in awhile. Really appreciate listening to all your analysis. So good.

Ohio State, USC, Clemson, Alabama have all had tough wins this year. (Georgia will have one at some point) it isn’t about looking perfect every week, it is about not having the same problems week after week. Great coaches like Nick Sabin use those close games to get better. It doesn’t matter that Michigan had a close game, it only matters that they get better. If they do, they can be a championship team. If not, well the Buckeyes will be happy.

Ohio state's "close game" As a double digit win with a second half that was a shut out and holding the other team to less than 100 yards. They also didn't get a free TD and two free INT's, nor did they get pushed around on both sides of the ball. Not the same kind of "close game". Listen to Klatt.

As a USC fan, I'm just glad to see the team in discussion in college football. It's absurd there have been such a long stretch of them being irrelevant. I don't think the team is national champion contending this year, I think two years with a couple of top end recruiting classes and development Trojans should be there.
But at the same time idk, the defense is where we all think they aren't there yet, but they keep providing big interceptions, not just fumble turnovers, straight up jumping routes and coming down with it. So maybe the defense is better than we think? They do need to get better against the run, but it's fun to at least in the moment having USC being a team worth discussing.

And with ease !!! --The use of the TE for example - was masterful and something I've been wanting to see for 25 - 30 years @ OSU ! ---- This team is LOADED and can win it all - more so than any OSU team I've followed since we beat USC & OJ Simpson in the Rose Bowl for the National Title !!! ----- Ryan Day is a genius even if sometimes too smart for his own good - as he admitted in his pressor before. He's young and still learning as a HC but was smart enough to delegate our D to Jim Knowles ! - Don't forget the virus had to be dealt with for 1/2 his time as a HC and that made changes nearly impossible for quite some time. He missed 1/2 a season & had to beg to get that !

As a Mich fan watching, Impressed with the improvement of Maryland. Michigan defense got exposed IMO. I think the secondary is on the weak side and needs protection from the D-Line with a better pass rush. Offensively JJ needs to read defenses better, he wont get away with those mistakes against Iowa. Not super crazy about the play calling. I don't understand when defense is dropping that many into coverage why they weren't going underneath more with crossing routes and finding open areas in the zone or running screen passes. Also RBs outside of B.C. have to protect the ball, D.E. was missed. I expect JJs touch to improve as well as recognizing what the defenses are giving in the RPO scheme....GoBlue

JJ threw the ball 59 times last year, & ran it another 27 times in 11 games. That’s a ton for a backup when the starter wasn’t injured. He then got to play 3 warmup games at home against high school teams (starting in 2 of those) this year…. He’s not a freshman, he wasn’t on the road, it wasn’t his first start, it wasn’t the biggest game he had played in, and it wasn’t against a great defense. Those are the facts. Period.

Crazy question. Is it possible that Michigan using two playcallers now is so that false tendencies show up on the stat sheet later in the season? I guess it's hard for me to imagine two people calling the offense and no one having a final say. Seems like it would lead to confusion and murderous during a hurry up situation. Honestly, I can't imagine how it works at all. However, I can see where slight play calling variations between two people might make tendency-scouting difficult for the opposing team. At some point, you would switch to one play caller. Maybe??

Last season is the perfect example of just how fragile Minnesota's team can be. They were giving Ohio State all they could handle in the opener until Mohamed Ibrahim got hurt. Had that not happened, they would have won the B1G West. The key this year is to keep everyone healthy. A key loss could spell doom for the Gophers. Would love to see them win the west...Lord knows nobody else wants it.
