I've reached the tipping point with luxury. The constant price increases (even during a worldwide pandemic), the falling quality issues, the scandalous behaviors in marketing and working standards, for me, it's no longer luxurious at all. You've made so many good points about consumption. What we support with our finances matters. I'm sad that I don't feel good about using many of the items I already own, even though most were purchased pre-loved. I can't promote these companies anymore by buying their items or by wearing them. I still like high quality, well made items that will last, and there are plenty available from companies with verifiable working conditions and sustainable practices. That is my new definition of luxury.
Thank you for your comment, I totally echo what you’re saying about what’s perceived as luxury is shifting. My perspective though on wearing the items I already have is a bit different - it would pain me to not wear the items I already have and have curated over a long time and I think wearing the vintage items I have is leaning in to the heritage of the brand rather than supporting the alleged issues happening in this current moment. Not sure if that makes sense, but i thought I’d share my perspective at least 😇
Thanks for sharing you perspectives Amanda! I would like to add to the ecological factor, we should also consider maintenance, protection and repair for our clothes. I have had some clothes that were scratched or ripped that I took to the tailor and they fixed like brand new. Instead of buying something new sometimes we can also repair or refresh our current clothes by taking good care of them!
Yes yes yes I totally agree! That’s a great point you’re making and it definitely should be part of this conversation - repairing and making our garments lasts should be considered as a first option before buying something new (even though that’s probably unfortunately not the case nowadays..). 😇
Your points were valid , my purse has suffered 😢so I hv only bought bags which are “has been “ or even the vintage bags so it s already passed , how much more can it go out of style … but it s usually form meet function and I hv enough to rotate and keep boredom at bay . There is a point that one has to raise the white flag and just get enjoyment out of what you have 🎉
Totally agree that focusing on using and enjoying the wardrobe items you already have is key - regardless of whether they’re on trend or totally out. As long as long as you enjoy wearing the items then it really doesn’t matter whether they’re on trend or not 🫶
I echo your point. We don’t get the same dopamine rush from buying one luxury item anymore, and that’s why we buy more frequently trying to feel the same dopamine rush. But I feel that what you’re doing on this channel will be the next best thing. The fun is all in the hunt. And I love your point about thrifting help saving the planet. I’d love to see more calculations of carbon emissions, like buying this piece will give me 2 days of happiness and is it worth the carbon emissions? 😊

A lot of people quit luxury, but go mad on an other area. Its the mindless consumption thats the problem, buying just to fit in. We can buy, just be mindful, will you wear it till the day it gets ugly?, WE DONT HAVE TO FIT IN. We just have to be happy with all we do, have, with our decisions,etc. Our mind should be at peace, no matter what.
Agreed, health is wealth! Smoking is so awful, yuck. I had an SA at a luxury store tell me that there were different “quality levels of polyester and synthetic fabrics” when I questioned why a polyester shirt was $490 usd. Like no, just NOOOO! I’m in a buying phase right now, as you know LOL! I’ve sold so much of my luxury stuff esp all the monogram, now I’m in replenishing mode😂 I know that I am more excited by special (to me) pieces regardless of price or image. I don’t have to prove myself to anyone by wearing something anymore. I still love certain luxury but def much more aware of what purpose it will serve in my life. I have been contemplating over 3 weeks about an Orange Birkin 35, I finally decided to pass because I know I just would barely use it. As much as it’s beautiful and I love it.
Yes I’m totally the same - I go in phases with shopping too..! Your Dooney and Bourke bag purchases are soooo good, I’m happy that I can vicariously live through your shopping on IG!! 🤩😂 And yes, buying things because it feels like a good addition to your own personal style is totally the way to go - we don’t have to own something just because it’s pretty (even tho a Birkin 35 in orange sounds amazing and sometimes I struggle with not getting carried away with buying something just because it’s pretty heheh) 😂😇
Yes I’m loving everything I’ve purchased. I have a Bolide 35 in Orange Poppy so I felt like it was overkill to add a Birkin in Orange. I rarely use my current Birkin and my Bolide I only use when traveling so I need to stick to practical daily wear items.
