I think Graves works for so many stories because he's not "special". He doesn't have any kind of overwordly power, he's not related to region rulers or anything, just a big guy wirh a shotgun, which can make him more relatable to the audience I guess.
My favorite thing about the Graves/TF story is when Tf gets tired of his shit and just starts listing his 20 past boyfriends. And each one is just a bigger punch then the last. Bro started with "a racist" and ended with a "whale man". Like Graves???

I find the idea that Graves likes being a thief more than thieving. Being the character of a story matters a lot to him because it's about the experience. My favorite part of this was his attitude in "The Boys and Bombolini," where he is spouting all this nonsense to TF about how he is a main character and savors this big scenes, while TF is absolutely fed up with how full of himself Graves got after saving the World from the Ruination. Also the fact that Graves is dirt scared of Illaoi, and thinks she's crazy.
A thing with the Graves rework that I super appreciate that I wish they did more of is that, old Graves was literally just a worse Lucian. Lucian was like the best adc at the time and people would only pick Graves if Lucy was banned or taken. Their kit were almost identical other than the smoke grenade. I wish they did this more now with older champs who receives counterparts who does mainly the same thing. *cough* Sona *cough*

It’s funny that Graves’s general story has stayed so consistent that you can still see the origin trope: the classic Western character of “outlaw whose partner left them for dead and seeks revenge.” But at the same time, with his current iteration, if you cut out the incongruous cowboy theming on his model you’d probably be pretty hard pressed to realize that. I like when extremely tropey characters end up evolving beyond those tropes, y’know?
Unpopular opinion, but I loved Graves' shotgun prior to his rework, when he was a traditional marksman, because it felt way more than a shotgun compared to what it is now. Sure, to your point, the shotgun now functions like a real shotgun, but goddamn, to this day, Graves' old Q, Buckshot, was and will always be the most satisfying ability in League ever. As you mentioned, the risk / reward mechanic surrounding that ability coupled with the sound /particle effects and the massive chunk of health that would disappear from the enemy's hub even during lower levels was just so... perfect. He had a boomstick, not a shotgun, and this whole package made it feel like that. While I play Graves from time to time every so often, he will never have such a satisfying ability coupled with such a fun, risky gameplay. Now he's just kind of there.

Next year will most likely have graves on LOR with a new design, since he is the last bilgewater champion not in the LOR. And I think they'll make him look more like he belongs in bilgewater wich will be awesome.
I've always really liked Graves. Riot have consistently managed to write him as such a funny and likeable dumbass scallywag, and he plays well off other characters. I get the sense that he's easy to write dialogue for.
I gotta say, I hate and love Graves at the same time, mainly at the gameplay aspect. I'm kinda mix with his kit (for the reason that I'm pretty dog water at it), mainly his Q cuz ofc. On detonation it's pretty strong but on its own when there's no terrain its pretty ez to dodge. Also his autos are so satisfying especially when jungling bcuz his autos pushes jungle camps (can even cancel their auto animation), but also difficult to get used to cuz he may have the SLOWEST auto attacks in game cuz they feel pretty slow especially in early lvls or your build has 0 attack speed (even full stack alacrity still struggles me) it only gets "playable" once you have full stack alacrity and either have noon quiver or heartbound axe for the attack speed. This is also one of the reasons I'm not a big fan of lethality graves bcuz I'm just relying on the burst of his Q and slow ass auto attacks, but in the end I still love him for 1 reason "SHOTGUN GAMING"
as an ARAM main, i tend to pick him when available, especially if the team is otherwise all AD. just reaching late game and two shotting squishies is oddly satisfying, and i like a frontliner who can poke reliably

Well, because Riot forced "the gay" out of them in the first place, person who worked on Graves and TF and created them confirmed it. And you are a bigot if you think that characters who were intended to be a certain way but were forced to be something else due to marketing concerns at that time are being brought back the original idea is somehow "agenda insertion". Straight agenda was forced on them in the first place. And it's not OK in both cases, neither turning originally straight characters gay or vice versa. And if you think that the second is fine but the first is not - it is what bigotry and hypocrisy are.

Well, it's a fictional character, it wasn't forced on them like they got hit with the gay beam or something, besides it's been well known for a while now that the original designers intended them to be gay but were shut down. The fans liked the idea, and now that Riot isn't scared to make gay characters anymore they decided to add the change. Also, appreciating that for once the gay representation lets the characters act like regular-ass people instead of a hyper stereotyped flamboyant gay couple, is in no way comparable to believing that any attempt to in any way include non heterosexual relationships in media is connected to some broader agenda rather than writers and designers genuinely caring about writing stories that allow those people to feel seen.
